Ever Been Knife Dissed?

My dad still calls every knife I have a switchblade for whatever reason and when I get a new knife, the first thing my mom asks me is "And what does this knife do that the others don't?" I think you simply just have to stop caring, don't talk knives to anyone but true knife people and simply enjoy them.

Some of my roommates in college didn't see the value in a $100 or so knife, but when I sharpened them up and they were super sharp....they definitely saw the value in that.

I let girlfriends that I'm starting to like handle my better knives in my presence, so they can appreciate ergos, handle material, and aesthetics. Most people who start to diss knives or whatever I pay no mind to. If need be, I start to ask about steel composition and such. Usually after that they realize that they're in the presence of a knife nerd. People usually heed my warnings to sharpness as well after a recipe list.

Additionally, sharpening knives for people earns major props. Totally done that a few times and gotten deep respect. My mom actually asked me about 2 weeks ago to resharpen her knives, but told me "I don't need them THAT sharp, because I cook while watching TV . Went to the flats on my Sharpmaker brownstones, and she came and found me later, pleased as punch. Can't really fault her because when she cooks, she doesn't do dishes, and I'd like to spare the fingers of my hapless father. Plus she really does cook well.

Zero

now that's funny because it is so classic...yes; i and other friends have had the same comments from family...

my eyes start to glass-over when people start talking about cell phones; so it's the same thing, we all like what we like...

Aw, shucks. Does that mean I can't tell you about my new BlackBerry?

You're absolutely right, of course. Maybe we should start treating people like they're homicidal maniacs because they're cell phone junkies.

True, interests do vary. Difference being, most of us probably don't go insulting other people's interests the second they mention them.

I need to relax more and come back with something witty like "This one does my taxes!" That or really dry like "This one plays dead"(and just let it sit on the counter like it is actually performing a trick).

Though the biggest thing to remember is that if there was no bladeforums or similar forums, we'd have very few people to enjoy knives with. We all know people who share the interest, but not always like the people on here.

Lol. Ask them why they need a new cell phone every year and can't just use what they have. Then tell them you see absolutely no difference between their new phone and their old one.

Now you guys have me thinking about cellphones. My contract is finally coming to an end and my beat up phone could stand to be replaced....buttons are failing one me lol.

This is technically off topic, but the principle is the same.

On night I loaned my Maratac 9290 flashlight to someone at a party so he could see to fix his truck. I went looking for it a while later, when found it I thought they managed to break it at first.

But no...the tailcap was just unscrewed halfway. Apparently they couldn't figure out how to turn it off...the big rubber tailcap button they had turned it on with not being enough of a clue!

That brush with idiocy, harmless as it was in teh end was enough...my good lights joined my blades in the list of tools I don't let out of my sight.

btw,

Why is it that some people when told a knife is very sharp, the first thing they do is run their thumb along the blade lengthwise?

I was carrying my Emerson Mini Commander at work one day and a co worker comes up to me and asks if I can borrow my knife and as I put my hand on the knife in my pocket I asked for what did he need it for and he responded "I need to open a paint can" right away I took my hand off of the Emerson and said that we had some multi tools in the back room that are store used have at them.

My co worker came up to me and asked to borrow my knife. It was a CRKT M-16. Not high end, but in pristine shape. She handed it back to me a few minutes later, minus an edge and a good bit of the finish. She had used it to slice open about 400 lbs of Silicone Carbide blasting medium in bags. to empty them into the big 55 gallon buckets by the blasters. I was so pissed I could not see straight. The next time she asked me to use the knife I said hell no. I usually always ask what they are using them for, unless the person is a knife nut like my self.

:barf: Is there any real thought behind people's actions? How does opening a paint can with a knife make any sense? Especially with somebody else's knife.

I kind of like the idea of asking somebody to borrow their cell phone, then bend down and use it to prop open my office door as a wedge. I'd kick it in there good for measure too :D

the only thing worse than when people mistreat someone elses knives is when non knife poeple mistreat their own

i know a guy who tried to sharpen his knife with a chainsaw file

Enough about mistreating knives, already. How about when people mistreat us? Now that's the real crime.

He must work for U.S. Customs :p

and when I get a new knife, the first thing my mom asks me is "And what does this knife do that the others don't?"

that was the story of my life when I was younger but with my dad. Then it turned into "now what does this gun do that your other guns don't" Then he just stopped caring. He just knows now that if i have extra $, I'll prolly blow it on a knife or gun.

Of course. The usual.

Knives are not screwdrivers, hammers, chisels or pry bars. Not everybody seems to get that.

I intend to beging EDCing two knives. Typically I have my CQC-8 and a keycom, but that's it. I'd like to add a Spyderco Tenacious..or something even less expensive..so I an keep the Emerson in my pocket and lend out the other.

I have been knife dissed!!! I had a brand new spyderco military in my pocket. At work, my manager asked if she could use the knife. A minute later, she came back and handed me the knife. In the back of my mind I had a feeling she messed it up. I checked it and sure enough, the damn tip was chipped off!! I was soo pissed. I asked her what the hell she did with the knife to chip the damn tip off. She told me that she used it to unlock a door!! I was so furious.
