Ever Been Knife Dissed?

Any time you loan your knife to someone you don't absolutely know is a fellow knife knut, you are exposing your knife to mortal peril.

You're lucky they didn't help out by sharpening them afterward.

That is a priceless response...thanks for the laugh.

I have been knife dissed!!! I had a brand new spyderco military in my pocket. At work, my manager asked if she could use the knife. A minute later, she came back and handed me the knife. In the back of my mind I had a feeling she messed it up. I checked it and sure enough, the damn tip was chipped off!! I was soo pissed. I asked her what the hell she did with the knife to chip the damn tip off. She told me that she used it to unlock a door!! I was so furious.

I would make her buy me a replacement. What I don't get is how someone can return a borrowed item in a damaged condition and NOT offer to replace it. If I borrow something, I do my best to keep it in the condition I recieved it in, and if it is somehow damaged I will apologise and offer to purchase a replacement, or at least pay to have it fixed. I would feel bad if i didn't do that at the least.

My thoughts exactly  I treat my own tools with respect, and other peoples tools with even more to ensure that I don't damage/ruin anything that isn't mine. I had a guy at a previous job (back when I did maintenance for a popular condeminium) ask to use my leatherman tool (keep in mind I had it for YEARS without a blemish on it as it was a gift from my dad when I became a bobcat in boy scouts). He asked me to go get something from the tool room. I left and came back and he was laughing because he had broken off 1/4 of the total blade from the leatherman. I was PISSED  <<<that face cannot even remotely describe how I felt!!! He laughed about my broken blade and I asked for some sort of compensation and he just blew it off.

Never again. If anyone asks, I'll just cut it myself because there is No way in hell that I would blindly give a knife to someone.

Sad to say, but there's a reason that box cutters and such were invented- or did people get worse after they were invented? Anyway, an unfortunately large amount of people view tools as disposable items. That is why most people don't own nice things.

My dad still calls every knife I have a switchblade for whatever reason and when I get a new knife, the first thing my mom asks me is "And what does this knife do that the others don't?" I think you simply just have to stop caring, don't talk knives to anyone but true knife people and simply enjoy them.

Haha! I can totally relate to that!

My mom does the same thing, and my dad calls every single folder I own 'weapons' except the multitools and his kitchen knives.

oh, all the time, actually. Not exactly in the sense that people are abusive of the knives I have and let them borrow (rare occurrence, I only loan to trusted people), but in the fact that people consider me the "crazy guy" (I'm in a University of California) with too many knives, and consider me too fear inducing to approach, haha.

As far as it goes, maybe it's better off that way. However, on the opposite side of the same coin, they consider me the go-to guy if shit happens to have hit the fan. Ostensibly, carrying my EDC stuff (Light, knife, etc) about has garnered me the nickname "batman"

If I ever need a horror thrill, I come back to this thread.
I've luckily avoided such dramatic situations, but surely I will learn from this thread.
Another thing is, don't ever let drunken idiot handle a knife. Idiots have just tendency of doing things wrong, add to that the drunkenness. People are often - by some reason - nervous with knives, especially younger ones.

Most retail customers who ask to borrow my knife now get a pair of cheap EMT scissors. I've had too many cutting hose on cast iron, or countertops, slashing open clamshell paks, cutting electrical wiring, etc. The knife goes out to the parking lot and I never can tell if it will come back. It does, but it's a distraction. So, scissors only now. If they hurt themselves with them, everybody gives them the raised eyebrow.

These same people also buy one socket at a time and want to know if its the right size.

I'm a sinner :(

I used a cheap knife as a weight on a rope to throw it over a spar while pioneering.

that said, it was closer to "folding steel ruler without markings" than knife. Cost me a dollar.

It also worked better as aweight than a knife :D

I had to unlock a door with my brand new Spyderco Rescue. When I was done it had several chips in the blade but it really saved my ass. I would have been up a creek without a paddle if it wasn't for that knife.

I feel you 110%. To be honest, that's one of the reasons why I rarely loan anything at all.
Another thing is to ask them back. Some people just don't seem to care to return the things they loan. It might sound stupid, but it makes me feel like stupid tight ass to be asking them back. I kind of wish they would realize that I'd like to have them back without asking.

I always carried a cheaper folding knife to work with me so I really didn't care what happened to it.

Normally I never lend out my expensive folders because I just don't trust people enough.

When camping I will let someone use my fixed blade if they need it no problem because I know my fixed blades will take any abuse that could possibly be put on them. ;)

Doesnt matter. Its YOUR knife. If you justified being out of a sticky situation and took the consequences of your own tool, I dont see a problem.

I honestly think of all the stories ive read on this thread (which is awesome so far and people should keep posting stories) it seems people think knife = flat head screwdriver.

I dont loan out my knives. I usually cut whatever needs cut. If I loaned one out and they came back not sharp, or had bladeplay, I would be pissed.

Most people think knives cost about five dollars. And they can't tell the difference from a home depot special and a custom.

Tell her the price of that knife, she'll look a you funny. That knife costs maybe 2-5 dollars in her mind I bet.

Ya the funny thing about that is that I told her the price. She told me that I got ripped off. I've never wanted to punch a chick in the face more in my entire life.

This thread is valuble asset for me. Now I really want to carry is-cheapo china-made crapola knife which I can actually loan for someone else and not to worry that my precious spyderco's, victorinoxes or kershaw is violated...

I lent a small folding knife to a guy a work.I watched him drop it on the concrete several times.I told him a little bit about the knife he wasn't interested. When I got it back a the end of the day it had chipps all down the blade and the tip was gone,he must of dropped it in the open position.Knives to most people are like prybars and hammers.I know someone that tried to tell me all stainless steel is the same and it's rust proof,"it sese stainless steel".I would also say where I live only 5% of people like or understand knives.:barf:

Did she give you a funny look before she said you got ripped of.?
I have people tell me i'm a sycopath for having a knife.
