hmmm, I guess I am not that old.. I only recall Adam Ant... don't drink don't smoke.. what do ya' do? O_O

My fingertips are sore, I have filed notches into my fingernails, my elbow hurts, and I have burned my self twice. All in the name of making knives. I also found myself mesmerized by the wonderful color changes copper goes through when annealing. I managed to get a penny soft enough to bend with my bare hands! I have a couple new designs on paper today, too. Been feeling creative. I need some power tools so I can make knives with less work. Even though i managed to get a bit done, it would be nice to grind a knife in minutes, rather than hours.

Although I may be headed to Vegas for a quick trip tomorrow, so may not get much done this week.

Nicholson Magi-cut... you need one. I have a couple larger nicholson files and they will remove metal like no tomorrow. I used a bench grinder with norton wheels to profile a few knives, it helped a lot. I think I paid $15 for it used. I also had a junky sears 4x36 that was good for grinding. The problem is belts cost a ton also, I use $25 worth of belts on each knife on average. A lot of that is because I really do everything with my grinder by hand including profiling. I use my makita saw (like carpenters have)with a friction blade to chop the bars, sometimes I use a hacksaw... KMG for almost everything else but holes, for that I have been using a cheap harbour freight drill.

If I had to do it on a strict budget instead of on my CC lol I'd get a Craftsman 2x42, a Harbour Freight Drill Press (the cheapest one is fine), and some kind of saw.

I'm getting a better metal cutting drill today, it will go 250 rpm! My last one did 620 rpm in low which I think is way too fast for knifemaking.

I feel for you on the sore arms and elbows, doing it all by hand is a ton of work.

Time for coffee! I'm really diggin' this new Costa Rican blend my buddy turned me on to. He owns a roasting company here, and gives me samples a pound at a time. Three things I never go cheap on, food, alcohol, and coffee. Nothing else matters!

Early mornin 'toons, anyone here remember Atom Ant?! I loved that one!

mmm coffee, I love good coffee. I like your outlook on spending! Good coffee, good beer, good food, ummm good knife grinder and kiln. Just the basics.

Yeah even as a kid I slept in too much for cartoons lol...

I know that song though.

dont drink dont smoke goody goody two shoes lol

Xander, I just checked my email... that blade you forged is off the hook! I really like the unique design, the way you angled the plunges like a katana is really cool. Huge too! Nice work!

I'm a child of the 80's. Yeah it was part of the Hanna-Barberra line up, not one of the really popular ones. I think it had only 3 hours a week run time. I don't remember if it was a Saturday morning one, though. I feel sorry for people who don't drink, because that's as good as you are gonna feel all day! :D good on ya for stayin straight!

I have a couple O.D.B. Nicholsons I use and a boatload of some other unmarked ones. They aren't great, but I take care of them and they do the job. I do have a Craftsman bench top drill press, sure is a work horse. I also have a bench grinder, 4" angle grinder, dremel, and all my construction tools. I have an old wood lathe at my parents house that is worthless for its original purpose but I am going to convert it to a disk grinder. It has a 9" disc already, jus need to pull the tail stock and cross beam off. Belt driven with step pullies, 1725rpm too. I have a 1hp 3450rpm 1ph Dayton motor that is waiting for funds to build a 2x72 of some sort. Most likely a NWG.

Certain things in life are too precious to go cheap on! Give me a 5x50 Partagas maduro, 2 fingers of Johnny Walker Blue, and some brie and crackers, and I am good to go! Not a thing in the world can bring me down from that!

CHEERS!

E.T.A. oh yeah and the only other tools I need to get are a file guide and center scribe for the edge marking. Those would help tremendously.

What type of handle do you think I should put on it? That is where I am stuck. Through tang with pommel or hidden tang with a single pin?

Ahh, gotchya. Guess I didn't hear you singing the tune as you typed it! You are a little older than me, I wasn't born 'til 83. I still remember much of the 80's though, enough to know that all these hipster kids running around in their flanel shirts and tight pants don't have a clue how horrible 80's fashion was even then. Remember those shirts that changed color in the sun? I saw a kid wearing one yesterday and his friends thought it was the coolest thing like it was brand new.

So where are you located Sloth?

I need a little slice of heaven on earth for a bit.

Daniel, I will put up a few pics somewhere on here later. Didn't want to put it in your forum, this is about you and your knives. Glad you like it so far! Let's hope I can keep it nice...

Either way would be cool but I lean to the single pin, it is somewhat Asian influenced and that might be cool. With that clip point a pommel would be cool but I lean to the pin.

That fishing spot looks awesome!

All I know is that if we all got together it would be one hell of a party.

I have a 6" Nicholson Smooth Cut (single cut) File, that stays in my hunt pack,as a touch-up field sharpener.....all you gotta do is USE NO PRESSURE; just slowly pull it down over the bevel, like you are tickling it with a feather....

I consider it a 'best kept secret'.....because I seem to be in the minority,on this, when I mention it to most KnifeVultures!

Which (bigger) Magi-Cut should I get for farm tools? like Shovels? or axe touchup?

I get lost in the multiple terms used for describing files....

I bet the smooth cut is sweet too, the Magi cut is aggressive yet leaves a clean area. I forget what size mine is... I have a big one for swords. I have always used a file to keep my machetes sharp, they do the job well, ask any Hatian sugarcane field worker!

I had to order the magi cut from Jantz and it was the medium sized one... 12" maybe/

That looks like it! I need to try sharpening with it, I just use the grinder now but I bet it would work very well.

Yeah that's about what I was thinking, one pin hidden tang. I did put a pic up over in the custom forum seeking advice about a handle.

Fishing was ok for the first hour at the tide change, but once the ebb picked up it stopped. Great day, though. Except my dumbass played hookie from work and forgot to put sunscreen on! Oh well, my boss is usually hung over on Thursday mornings so I think I can pull it off. Did land a nice 3lbs large mouth though.

I think an interstate DFK get together is a great idea! I am anxiously waiting for my invite and plane ticket...
