Just looked up that grinder, did you get a 4x36? I started out on a grinder just like the 4x36's I saw. Looks good!

lol I started grinding at maybe 3 pm and finished at 8:30, ONE BEVEL! I looked down and my shoes actually were covered with about an inch of metal dust...

I'm only at 60 grit right now!

I didnt go to bed until 0445 either, was trying to find and watch videos on youtube on how to sharpen recurve blades, and what to use. I have a lot of little folders (mostly Kershaws) that are pretty sharp out of the box, but I use all of them. I don't have any safe queens, and even the discontinued ones like the Offset and Titanium Bumps see some action. They have pretty complex blade patterns though, and would like to be able to know how to restore a nice edge to them if needed. Or should I just send them to Kershaw to get re-sharpened?

it's these 3 that I think will be a challenge to sharpen, if I have to:

Its not that bad to sharpen recurves. First off do you convex your edge bevels or keep them flat? Second, get some good sandpapers; 220-320 (reprofiling), 400 (coarse), 600(med), 800(fine), 1200(x-fine), 2000 and up is for polishing. Crome oxide (green compound) is good to finish on. If you keep your edge bevels flat, get some closet rod or dowels in apropriate sizes and cut them lengthwise in half. Mount your sand paper to the round side and use it edge trailing just like a stone. For most pocket knives between 1" and 2" dowels work fine. If you convex your edges pad the rounds with either leather or a mouse pad, then put the sandpaper over it. You can strop this way also.

I think that about covers it. I like silicon carbide paper for sharpening, convex edges are sweet too.

That middle one does look a little tough... I bet a mouse pad over a curved surface and some paper would do it.

I love chisel grinds because I think they are easy to sharpen and maintain, I just strop the back of them after hitting the edge. For me stropping is usually good enough once they are sharp.

those are awesome and very helpful pointers X & DF, i'm going out today to grab some of that stuff and make my own sharpeners. what do you think of PVC pipe instead of wood dowels? also, since these folders arent really used for chopping anything and mostly cutting/slicing, is the flat bevel the way to go? I think should i just set it up with the mousepad/leather backing for a convex grind and stropping utility.

I love this forum.

...yeah for slicing I keep the angle on the flatter side. I'd try to take some of the shoulder of the microbevel and turn it into a convex transition so it is even sleeker on the edge as opposed to more ax-like. Stock bevels are usually great though so it is all a matter of preference and more importantly, fun. :D

what's hard to see in the picture is that the recurve part is actually a hollow grind in somewhat of a semicircle, and the forward edge to the tip is flat. lots of things going on thre, lol.

PVC would work just fine, I use wood because I can just staple the paper to the flat side, or I have taken a metal plate the same size and screwed it to the flat side to clamp the paper down and keep a warped "stone" straight. I think some 6-8 oz leather would be better than a mouse pad because much less length of the edge contacts the stone when working a recurve. So a slightly firmer backing combined with a lighter pass is needed to keep the edge intact.

As for geometry, you should read up in the maintenance forum and decide for yourself, but here's the gist of it:
Convex edges offer stronger edges, are easier to field repair/maintain and work well on thin blades. They are great for novice sharpeners, as well. Common on EDC knives and the like.
Flat edges offer better ability to slice thinly, can take a more keen edge, and actually work better for chopping. They take considerable skill to freehand sharpen, but many guides and kits are available. Common on kitchen knives.

Personally I keep my folders with a flat edge because they don't feel as dull when they wear compared to a convex edge. My edc knives are AUS-8, 14C28N Sandvik, 440C, and high carbon on my slip joints.

For the recurve on the knife in question I would go with hard leather or no backing to keep from washing out the hard angle frm recurve to normal curve. It would look cheap with a smooth edge transition and sharp bevels contrasting.

Ok guys I need some back up here...my wife expects me to now take our house rabbit on walks. I told her that if I have to take her on a walk, we're having roast rabbit for dinner. She even bought a pink and lime green harness for the critter. She always says I am riduculous with my obsession to knives, but now I am tryin to convince her she is the ridiculous one. What do you think?

Am I out of line for calling this manipulation?! You want me to do WHAT honey? Or else I'm not getting WHAT!
This just ain't cool...

-Xander <head hung low in shame...hop...hop...hop>

Sorry Xander but I think the rabbit looks cool. lmao. You should teach it to catch a frisbee or something. Take it for walks... rotflmao!

I still have 3 squirrels we will be unleashing here soon, they are big enough to make it on their own I hope. It is insane how much they eat... they can take out a whole peanut in like 30 seconds. They are fun, they like to sleep in until late and stay asleep all night, during the day they like to do crazy acrobatics for a second then pass out again. They like to "talk" to each other with these funny murmering noises and only "chip" when they are pissed or if the cat is around. I like 'em but I'll be very glad to let them out.

Xander, you should sharpen my knives for me, you have some great tips. I like the leather a lot for convexing. I do all my sharpening on the KMG at the moment so I'm not the best help.

sounds like you need to think about having a kid, that will definately keep you busy, lol.. and if you already have one.. then time for the 2nd..

hmmm on that onion knife, though there is that curved hollow grind, its not doing any slicing.. in your blown-up photo I can see the flat bevel.. so just work on the bevel.. maybe I am missing something.. I can't read much without my eyes bleeding today @_@

daniel- grinder is 2x42 I think.. or 2x36.. with a 6in disc.. actually far better than I thought for $140. All cast aluminum tables and upright parts, LOL I am king technical... I tested it on some random flat metal bar and made a sweet jailhouse shiv... I need to make room for it as the dust, as you mentioned, builds up fast and I don't want my shop table to be a huge nasty mess.. It needs it's own corner..

take care all. peas.

BTW my actual sharpening process is...

60 blaze belt (for a really dull one or one with no bevel), 300 gator belt, 160 gator belt... sometimes I skip the 300 belt, 65 gator, 45 gator, 30 gator (equivalent to 400 grit but looks like 600), then I use a cork belt with green chrome and finish with a leather belt and pink scratchless compound. I am very careful to use a light touch with the leather belt.

I always use fresh belts and keep the steel very cool by dipping it every pass or two.

I usually sharpen with a slack belt, I keep a clean microbevel from using a very tight slack belt they do convex a little especially with the cork and leather.

Sometimes I use scotchbrite belts to sharpen with, they add a nice convex. I have from coarse to extra fine on the scotchbrite belts, I love them.

So... kids.. hmmm. Can you release them into the woods after a couple of weeks like squirrels? I have a big bag of peanuts... I could do it!:D ;)

That grinder sounds sweet! The ones I saw looked heavy duty, like they would make a good knife.

Metal dust... I was literally covered in it a few minutes ago. I'm actually worried the metal dust could alter my septic system or something, lol I need to hose off outside or something! I need a dust collection system, the 5 gal bucket of water catches a lot but metal dust sucks... it has impregnated itself into my workbench and I need to take control of it.

I have Evan Williams, it could get silly in here tonight.

Tó Di hi. bi naak'ai'

NICE!! Good call, DF. Myself, it is Sierra Nevada Torpedo and chocolate chip whole wheat cookies. Second batch is in the oven right now actually. I started with three fingers of Crown and a dash of pepper to compliment dinner.

This, my friends is how you start a Saturday night!

Daniel, squirrels? Really? Atleast my house rabbit is litterbox trained and edible if I get tired of the damn thing.

Sloth, got one of those...he'll be 2 on 9/11.

Hey I can eat the squirrels too. :D

It was sad, the mom squirrel died and they were trying to hang out with me... I felt bad for them so we took them in. They aren't pets though, I just wanted to give them a chance. I shall unleash their fury very soon!

Sierra Nevada, a classic. Cookies rule too.
