is it possible to smelt small amounts of it using a torch or something similar? like maybe in a crucible and pouring it into a flat sandform? Fairly Bearded Battle Axe, anyone?

That is a great idea, I could use a mild steel box as a mold and grind it off... heck I have 2 acetylene torches for a heat source that would be cool! The local jewelry supply sells all the stuff I would need! Fairlymascus!

lol the next thing you know i will be looking at 50 ton presses to press that stuff and making ball bearing damascus. Hmmmm....

How would all those steel dust particles work together? You have Ti, the air quenched, oil quenched.. are there any stainless? Does it matter? perhaps it would turn into some crazy super strong steel that would patina/rust in speckles O_O

and.. I put in a request for a bearded axe this week with Butch, odd...

Way out of the box Daniel. Big things are gonna happen at DFK. I hope you are ready.

Oohhh, I'm looking forward to the first DPM steel edc with matching spike! Can't wait!

It will be the best metal ever!

...you guys keep it a secret though, I don't want any big knife companies or foundries finding out about this.

maybe arrange some cinderblocks so you have a shallow tray, then you'd just have a bit of casting flash to grind off. You can make any shape you want, and just carbidize the edge. make a ton of slicers, or make your own sword & knife fittings! pommels, hilts, tsubas, bolsters...the resulting steel will be quite interesting I think.

I have always been into different alloys and that sort of thing. I have a friend who had a smelter who taught me a lot, he processed all sorts of metal from gold to aluminum. It would be cool to use this crazy alloy for fittings or a rustic sword. I know how to collect black sand and hematite as well and one day may make my own sword from the steel up. Tamahagane!

Yes,DFK; time to move forward on this.....

:D

My last job was prospecting for rare minerals, I know where to find flourite for flux too!

I have some slabs of gold ore I found I want to use for scales, they would be sweet on my "own metal" knife!

 Oh....now I'm really getting all excited!!

Lol you guys don't give me too many ideas, the next thing you know I'll be obsessed with making steel, lol, making my own stamp mill, arrastras, I need a donkey! :D

I keep thinking about San Mai and Mokume too, I want to make all that stuff!

Sounds like it's starting to come togather in your head, man. Everybody step back, we're not sure
what's gonna happen. But be ready for the out-freaking-ragous. Lmao :D.

Like Adam told Eve,the first time:
