Morning men. My youngest is coming home from college for the weekend tonight.I have my mother in law coming up from down state on Saturday. She like to get up here before the snow starts to pile up.Should be an awesome weekend.Me and my son are going grouse hunting this evening.

In Brooklyn today. It's not so bad being here, it's the drive over that sucks. Almost lunchtime.

Hey bro! I haven't been around lately due to getting off on a tangent with razors. I am geting ready to restore a second straight, and have also picked up a late 50's english Gillette Super Speed. I just had my first shave with it, and I looked like I used a weed whacker to shave with! Blood oozing from all over my face and neck! Still the closest shave I have ever had, though.

You get around to cleaning up those I-XL razors yet?

-Xander

Nice pick on the English Super Speed. I got caught up in Gillette razors myself. E-bay is eeeviiilll. :grumpy:
I've been using a 1955 red tip lately.

Nice, sounds fun... we have grouse around here, I can imagine you have to be pretty good to get one.

I love big cities but hate the traffic... I wish we had some larger towns closer, my area is pretty remote in some ways. Cool...

woof. Although, I don't know if I will need another necker/kiridashi just yet. Do I have 2 or 3 that you're holding for me? I forget, lol.

3, I carbidized that backpacker by the way... I have a sheath in progress for that necker you ordered a while back too, thanks again for being such a helpful dude! :D

By the way, I'm waiting on a drill bit for the chainrings and the Havok is on deck on the order list! I have a sheet of Crypto in and it is beautiful, lol I even have the stainless tool wrap ready to go for it, I just have to drill it and BAM in the oven! :D

Yeah I pretty much just stumbled onto it without knowing shit from shinola about razors. I picked it up at the flea market for $5 because I was just looking for a decent DE razor. I guess it is a fairly uncommon version of the flair tip SS with some funky quirks, like the "teeth" on each side under the head. Good shave, though. Still working on my technique. All the bleeding the other day was attributed to razor bumps not completely gone from my previous shave. Gonna get me a blade sampler and a few samples of soaps/creams to try out as well. I will keep an eye out for another gillettte or similar DE along with always looking for straights on the cheap. Restoring straights can be addicting, they are good little side projects that can be finished up in a day or so. The Böker I just did only took about 6-7 hours of shop time. Still needs to be honed, though.

I meant to ask, is I-XL the type of razor? I have little knowledge of straight razors. Well some if they weigh 2 pounds and are .360 thick. :D

I-XL is the brand. George Wostenholm was the cutler. At least I think that's who made those razors you got. Looked like it when you posted them. They are measured in 1/8" increments by blade height I.e. 5/8 is 5/8" tall. Tip style is also a factor. Grinds differ widely as well. Straightrazorplace.com has some good info in their wiki about anatomy and makers/years of manufacture.

If you do make new scales, be sure to peen the wedge end first, then the pivot. I did mine backwards and had a hell of a time getting it done. Thin scales for sure, 1/8" or 3/16" thick stock is the norm.

I think you'll find it fun to clean them up, I know I did!

ohhh snap...this is exciting!

Xander, thanks for the great information on the razors. :D

I got a couple knives glued up today, one for an order with red G10 and one fat wharncliffe with Shadetree Glo-J scales. More stuff too...

Dan you are cranking them out!!!! I am loving that, it means my order will be coming up. Will be awesome to put it through the rigors of hunting season. I do like the old mountain men did. I use a large bowie knife for just about everything. Gutting, skinning and processing all of the game that I kill.Going to firearm hunt this year pure stalking with my 454 Casull handgun. That will drop them in their tracks. Venison stew is a staple at our table all winter.

Daniel....keep crankin' them out brother!!! That means my "Black Glow EDC" should be coming up soon....:D
