I just finished hanging insulation and can hardly keep my eyes open. I have about half of it done! I honestly didn't think hanging the insulation would be tough but it was a long day.

BigCountry I'm happy to be making that knife for you, it is going to be nice! The gun range sounds great, you can't beat the price either. I spent three summers shooting at a range, talk about fun.

RiverWarrior, sounds nice on the AR. They sound like a really nice gun to own, lots of options.

Xander, you guys have stuff growing there? Dang it, I'm moving!!! My sister lives on the coast in TX and told me she still has tomatoes going, I was amazed!

I can do tons of shooting on my property, nothing too long range but there would be no complaints. A couple of my neighbors have some serious automatics they shoot all the time. Lol one guy used to blow up trees and stuff with explosives down the road!

I was looking for photos and found this one of my old place, now that's a lot of snow. Yes that is my roof.

I took these photos about 40 miles north of here near Silverton, Colorado.

Geeze the weather showed up with a vengance here, flood advisory with 3/4" of rain per hour right now and possible 100mph winds as well. I just went outside and it looks like its blowing a steady 35-38 knots with gusts close to 45 knots right now. The ski resorts here got 3 feet last night and another 6 feet is projected from this storm alone. The Donner party never stood a chance. lots of cool history involved with the westward migration around here. Or as everyone else calls it, the gold rush.

Great pics Daniel, would love to be able to come out and see that part of the country myself.
Maybe in a few years.....

Morning men.Xander you stay safe.Them flash floods are no joke. The Donner party were so hard up after they ate their belts and shoe leather they started on the dead.

Nice calm day today. A bit of wind still blowing but nice.

Big, I live only about 3 hours from Donner Summit and spent many summers in gold country at my grandparents house when I was young. They lived only 6 miles from Sutters Mill, and California history is mandatory in school here. All together its about 3 years of courses. I know it well!

So I went grocery shopping today and managed to get a months worth of supplies for only $50! This should keep me going til march madness or so!

Or maybe I'll just host a grinding marathon! Who wants to come join in the fun?

Serious weather! Your location sounds too cool though, sailing and skiing!

Thanks! If you ever make it out here I'll show you some cool stuff!

Wow! I have to read about that...

That's awesome!!! Grinding fuel! I have to drink lots of coffee and energy drinks to keep going myself, it takes it out of you.

6 miles from Sutters Mill, sounds like a cool spot to me. I know there is a lot of great collecting in CA, lots of Jade and Gold.

Keep us posted on your gun project, that gun is bad ass!

Morning. Got a long day at work today, been here almost an hour already and will be here til about 7 tonight. No football game for me, which doesn't bother me too bad since I don't really follow any sport with a ball.

Daniel, the San Joaquin Valley (I'm smack in the heart of it) is a very interesting place. My parents house is actually below sea level and my house 3 miles away is only a few feet above. It is the richest farmland in the country and we have true mediteranian weather here being the same latitude. 2 hours in any direction will get you someplace different, head east and go skiing, head west and go surfing. I have done both in the same day.

As I understand it, there is some very top notch rock collecting here with several gemstone pit quarries open to the public, plenty of streams and rivers, and loads of gold still to be found. I used to do quite a bit of panning and still have a slouse box and gold detector, but haven't in a while since gas prices shot up. Many places here are regulated to just "hands and pans," no shovels, slouse boxes, dredges, etc. because the public would destroy much of the river if they could. I still dig through the tailing piles left from the 1850's (they are all over the place here) for various things whenever I get the chance. Usually all I find are rattle snakes and pull tabs from beer cans, but some wrougt iron objects are still kickin around in there.

Morning men. Nothing going on today.going to watch football with my son all afternoon.

Nice! I love watching football but haven't seen a game in years, next year I'm figuring out a way to watch... pirate TV station or something!

Surfing and skiing! Nice! We have some serious weather variation with the desert practically on the ridge south of me and actual tundra only an hour north.

I know you have some great collecting around, a Gem Trails guide will probably have maps to great spots in your area.

I have never been into panning for gold but right now it might be worth the effort! I know where there is plenty of gold actually but most of it here is locked in chemically and must be cyanide leached to pull the gold out. I used to hike a lot looking for old mines and saw a lot of cool stuff! I found a 6 stamp mill in working order with a belt still attached to the cam, it still has grease on it and is 1880's era. I assume it was ran again in the 1930's... we had a mini gold boom here during the depression, a lot of the "mined out" areas proved valuable again. I think the wrought iron might be the most valuable thing now!

HI all, been taking it easy and catching up on the forum today.

Very nice! Sounds like you have been working a ton, enjoy the well deserved day off! :D

Lol my 7 month pregnant wife and I just finished unloading a truckload of sheetrock and I'm going to do some minor framing and major sheetrock work later. I'm on a late lunch break, I'm pushing hard to get this shop completed.

Lots of gold here is still locked up chemically, but then ice thing is that there are large cinnabar deposites around here so if you know what you're doing you can do the potato trick with the cinnabar. Just look up mercury leeching of gold with a potato, its a miners trick from the 1850's. It was also later determined that the mercury was the cause of what was called "Gold fever," or someone crazy for gold...

Oh yeah I know about the potato trick, lol be careful with that stuff! Gold sponge! There is a ton of cinnabar here and mercury is cheap as well... too scary for me though! I know of a spot where there was a retort for refining and there is literally tons of leftover slag from cooking the gold. A nearby mine supplied flourite for smelting the gold and also iron in huge quantities. I posted a picture of my cabs, there is a piece of freeform faceted flourite I collected and cut from that mine.

My friend owns a gold mine and told me that any rock worth $1 pound is about as good as gold ore so that is (was) more my thing. I do know of an awesome spot for a claim, there is a huge tailings pile from a great mine and the ground is good as well... there is placer and hard rock mining along with several forms of gold. Up until recently it was claimed but all the old timers are gone.

Morning men.Had an appointment for the pain clinic for today.I have to reschedule because we have freezing rain and more on the way.I am not driving 3 hours in each direction in that.

Morning y'all. Got the day off, got my day scheduled in the shop and am looking forward to it! Just waiting for day to destroy the night while I have my coffee. First order of business,;s clean and organize my two work benches, make room for the new tool box and then stock the tool box. I am going to stop at Home Depot in just a few minutes to get some sandpaper and feathering adhesive for my disc grinder, maybe some other type of metals if they have them.

Raining again now, more wind advisories for 50+ mph, though I never aw that here last night. Saw maybe 30 knots with a gust or two to 35-38 knots. Up in the Sierra's they are getting more snow, 2-3 feet today. Skiing is starting to get better, litte slushy still from these first storms, but the powder is coming slowly.

Will report back later with some new chunks of steel in knife like shapes!

-Xander

Morning men.

Bigcountry I wish you the best with the weather and especially on the pain.

Xander, cool you are getting some shop time in! I can't wait for your report back!

I was up until late working on insulating the shop and it is almost done. This week has been literally, eat, insulate, sleep. I have maybe an hour left then it is drywall time... that's today!

We haven't gotten the weather we expected either and that is fine with me, it is supposed to snow for the next two days. Lol I still haven't removed the last stuff and my driveway is now a blue diamond ski hill!

Well got some time in the shop, like I said. Spent some time on the phone with DanCo today discussing how to build a belt grinder with what I have available. Got a few good ideas and my thinkin wheels are turning now.

Also got my work space cleaned up and organized as well. Moved my new tool box to where I want it, unfortunately it is partialy obscuring a window but it is the only feasable spot right now. Got the tool box stocked a little bit as well.

Started grinding on this little gentlemas bowie today as well, with some sort of lapse of judgement I decided to grind the clip first. Well making due working around it now. Didn't get but a few hours in the shop til the wife came home, but hopefully I can get back out there tonight for some sanding.

I will report back with updates from time to time.

Morning men. Didn't make it out to the garage last night to finish sanding, but i will try to this morning befor work. The storm has passed over us and the next one is staying to the north pretty well, so loks like I get about 10 days of sun nd highs in the low 60's! I think I can handle that.

-Xander

Morning men.Xander enjoy the 60 degree weather we may get that in late April if we are lucky. Snowing as usual today but that is better than the freezing rain we had yesterday.

Nice work! Great lines and the grind looks like it is coming along nicely. Wow nice weather too!

We had the same thing, freezing rain last night then some snow.., probably 4 more inches. I'm just glad the days are getting longer. Here in a while we will get direct sunlight!
