Cool on the straight edge! Those are incredibly nice.

Semi soon I should say, lol! Everything is coming together nicely though. I need to buy some specialized tools to make them perfect then order some steel...

I decided we need more mini cleavers... :D

On a related note. A while back I heard on the radio that it was "national flash a trucker day." later that day I was fortunate enough to get two "freebies" while walking along the main drag near work. The truckers looked pretty happy too. And thank the lord for college chicks.
Life is good.

Howdy Gents!

Been a while since I've said hi.

Just got back from a two week "cruise" stopped in Jamaica for two days (back on the ship at night) and spent 12 hours in Ecuador waiting for the airplane. I am now a shellback ('sailed' across the equator) and a member of the Order of the Ditch (passed through the Panama Canal). Sorry, no pictures (I have some, but I can't upload to the web from the work computers. To be honest I'm surprised I even have access to BF).

Unfortunately I haven't had much time to sail :( (and I'm getting envious of the crew on the boat I regularly race on, an Olsen 30).

For the moment work is pretty boring (hence this post), but it looks like they've got another job lined up for me starting monday.

Oh wow that sounds cool! I know a lot of people who want to do both!

I'm glad everything went well and great to see you!

Good morning guys!

Wait a second now, you race an Olson 30?! Thas a west coast design, other than Texas and Seattle I didn't know there were boats in other places! I have raced "toilet seat" 25's and 30's for years! Great boats, my best friend has one currently. Aways fun down wind in big seas as they like to nose dive and have a little rudder.

If you don't know what little bouancy up front, big spinnaker, and little rudder does to stability, this is a famous crash sequence from '95 under the Golden Gate bridge...

Hoot-crash.jpg

Different boat, but this is what it looks like from the drivers seat...if you look at the sail emblem, the "O" is shaped like a bed pan, that's where the nick name "toilet seat" came from...

Ok, so I'm going to have to make it up to Kingston to go sailing with you Andrew!

Good morning ! no work for me today!!!!!!!!! I get to play with knives all day . trying to finish up the scales for my rat1 today .That guy did bring the straight edge last night . this one had rust all over it and sadly not just surface rust so I am going to try to make a knife out of this one.Daniel, if I send you a small piece can you heat treat it to see if it will work for a cutting tool?Have a great day!

Kevin, the straight edge should hve part number on it, call or email starrett and ask what steel they used in those parts. Starrett steel is very high quality, and they do heat treat their straight edges. I have a couple of small starrett scales (rulers) that are great.

Here's another option, force more pitting and rusting, with brine baths, a spray of fCL, and other stuff. Wire wheel it clean and then make a knife from it, kinda a faux forge finish look.

Cool pics!

BC good to hear that!

FBC, yeah let me know and we can see about heat treat, you guys will have to send me a few blades to put in the kiln

Good idea on the finish X, I have been thinking about trying that with some rough looking stock. I have some 154cm with the coolest "bark" on it, it is about the toughest stuff ever to grind too.

the rusty straight edge and a blury pic of the ummm texture, after I wire brushed it, to give you an idea

Morning y'all. Kevin, I think that bar might need a bit more "character"! Just leave it outside for a while, every so often card off the red rust to expose new metal. You'll also be doing a nice rust brown patina finish if done right, which I think looks kiler if done right!
