Good luck Xander!

I managed to pick up this pen on the 'bay.

No cap, and rather dirty, but at $7, who cares? It isn't something I am liable to take notes with in class anyways...
The local antique store in Kingston has been well picked over for pens, and those they have are rather overpriced. That is a good thing, I don’t' need anymore pens :/

It will be a nice introduction to repair, maintenance and use of vintage flex pens. At 7 bucks I won't be too worried if I spring the nib, or ruin the barrel as I try and return it to a nice black colour with micromesh.

Sweet score on that Swan! Those are great pens. Do you know what the barrel and section are made from? If its hard rubber, DO NOT use water on it, it will discolor. I have restored quite a few FP's, its fun. I can tell you that depending on the nib condition, it may be worthwhile having a nibmeister tune it. I have a few flex nib pens, including a debutante sized Parker duofold vacumatic with 14K semi flex nib.

Had an excellent day at the flea market with Zyler, today is the first time I let him walk the whole thing! We usually have to put him in a stroller because he will run and grab everything he sees, but I decided he has to learn sometime. I'm proud of him, he did well!

I managed a few good scores! I got a nice drawknife (more on it later), a new Nicholson usa made key way file which will be great for slotting guards, and a Dixon jewelers hamer.

It is a black hard rubber pen. If it needs to be tuned I should be able to do that myself with a bit of micromesh. I'm not sure I want to spend the money on getting a nibmeister look at it (especially since most of them won't touch flexible nibs). I found a nice site to help me take it apart. http://goodwriterspens.com/2012/07/05/disassembling-a-mabie-todd-swan-eyedropper-filler/

I already own a couple pens with varying amounts of flex. A Noodler's Ahab, Peter Pan by the Salz Bros, and a few springy pens including a Parker Vacumatic and a TWSBI 540 (EF).

So I got that draw knife all cleaned up and ready to use. It is a D R Barton made in the 1870's. It has a forge welded bit of high carbon steel in a soft iron frame. It has seen some love for most all of its life, never taken to a bench grinder, geometry has stayed intact and the edge is in decent condition.

Morning y'all!

Daniel, I hope you're getting better, having the flu sucks. (Knocks on wood) I haven't had the flu in a few years.

Bitterly cold here on the left coast, LA just set a record low of 34 degrees yesterday! Its warmed up to 'bout 32 here now, but no ice today. Highs expected to be around 48 or so.

I am tempted to try and work in the shop this morning before I go to work, but its darn cold! We'll see how that goes, I need to get going on a couple projects.

Have a good day everyone.

Sounds cold! It has been crazy cold here, the high yesterday was 4! too cold...

I am still very sick, I have not been sick for this long in years. This stuff is bad news...

I did layer up and go to the shop yesterday, I took two ibuprofen and got a lot done!

I was going to decide how to fit my new equipment in the shop and wound up building an entire new work bench for my KMG! The bench is half the size of the old one and now I can fit in my dust collector near the grinder and 220 outlet. Now everything is good as far as layout goes! My old grinder bench is now a finishing area bench too, it worked out very well.

...still waiting on the mill! I can't wait. :D

Take it easy Daniel and get better.I need to keep a closer eye on the tools for sale section in the exchange!I missed a KMG for a good price within driving distance from me.AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGG!!!!:mad:oh well next time. oh yea check out the pocket knife I found for my wife.

That is awesome Kevin! I saw that KMG for sale as well, I was tthhhiiiiiissss close to driving out there and offering to trade the wife for it! :p

Well, the draw knife works well...

At least 138 years old and still going strong! I don't think they make tools to last that long any more.

Back to making logs into toothpicks, it keeps me warm in the 28* shop (so does the bottle of rum )

OK now that is good! Too funny, I can't believe it. :D

Those old razor blades are way cool too, I love stuff like that.

KMG - they rock! I am always on the look for used equipment, it can be hard to come across here. I saw enough gear for a whole knife shop in the TX pawn shops that I really wanted, I couldn't believe it. I am still kicking myself for missing a 1940's Delta Drill I saw here. I hope you get one soon.

Look out for Baders, Hardcore (I want one!) Wilton... I just saw what I think was a Grizzly that looked nice. I see industrial grinders that look good too...

I really like the KMG, it can do anything and will last forever. I highly recommend it.

I am getting a horizontal KMG, it shipped yesterday! It is going to be one bad mofo!

Xander that draw knife is excellent! Very nice... that will come in handy for lots. Do you have a hewing axe too? Cool stuff! The laminated blade is awesome.

When I was in TX I saw some fine woodworking in action... very interesting stuff.

Morning guys!

No hewing axe, its on my short list. I did a bunch of hewing with my cheap old tomahawk, but the haft on it is all wrong for that work. It just killed my forearm. I don't own any big choppers either, so I was stuck. I opted for more drawknifing than one should have because hewing wasn't going well.

My grandfather was into woodworking, so I find it nice to put on some of his music (mostly swing, he played trumpet and vocals) just clear my mind and make saw dust. I have a bunch of his old tools as well.

A pic from last night, just because I liked it...

Wednesday, the middle of the week... :D once you are over the hump it is downhill from there, lol!

I always think of my old roomate that worked a random schedule, he always called the third day of work hump day. It still cracks me up. His last day of work was "Friday", even if it was really Tuesday!

Morning!!!! :D

I got the mill in yesterday evening! It looks incredible... ---> http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=3960&category=1387807683

I did a ton more reading last night and almost feel ready to turn it on! lmao... I have to bolt in down first but that is easy.

I'm going to take some photos and do a thread on my shop improvements soon.

I must be missing something...

Maybe it's a California thing???

Its ok Matt, just tell it to SWMBO and and see where it goes from there! :D

I'm still not convinced you got a mill, I think you just got some carbide teeth so you can gnaw through that CPM D2!
