Hey Xander, any thoughts on this camera? I really like the D200 the more I read about it but want video too...

http://www.adorama.com/INKD3100K.html

The nikon D3100 is a great camera! It is a consumer level camera, not a professional grade like the D200, but that doeasnt mean it loses anything in quality! Certain lenses in the nikon line will not work with auto focus on the D3100, but its only a few specialty lenses. The 18-55 VR lens is a great starter lens. Fyi, 50mm is close to the same viewing angle as the human eye so its a great walking around focal length. The "VR" stands for Vibration Reduction, which is great for low light hand held.

Some more terminology, it is a "DX" camera, which means the sensor is smaller than a 35mm film frame, so lenses marked DX will be actual focal length, but if its an older lens for film cameras (auto focus or not) it will make the lens effectively a longer focal length by a factor of 1.5x, so a 100mm DX lens is 100mm on there, but a 100mm film camera lens (aka "FX" or "full frame") will effectively be 150mm focal length.

I understand you wanting video, makes sense and is very reasonable for your needs. I personally prefer the more control I get with the pro grade camera, but to a newb photog I think letting the camera do most of the work is a good idea. The D3100 still allows a lot of control if you want to experiment or control the exposure differently than the camera. It is also smaller and lighter thn the D200.

I think its a great camera and will suit your needs quite well.

If you have any other questions ask away, I'll try to help as mucha s I can.

Also, grey-market vs. USA market do not have the same warranty for repair, so the $50 savings for a new grey-market might not be worth it in the end if something goes wrong. Most of the big camera retailers actually label their product as such, but some don't or don't even know. Refurbished is fine in my book, though.

Thanks Xander, that looks like the one then! Thanks and that helps a ton!

I agree on the refurb, I'm fine with that sort of thing but it isn't really worth the price difference. 42nd street has a good deal on a new one, I might try to get it.

If you go that route, let me know, I'll find some extra goodies for you ;-) I have some stuff lft over from my old kit.

Places like Target, BestBuy, Sears all sell the D3100 kit, so if you ever get a gift card or something that can make the difference too.

:D You rock!

Equipment? I have a knife to go with the camera.

lol I'm not kidding, I do have a mini tripod but that's about it.

I'm excited to get a good camera, I have always been into photography. My in laws developed film for a living and had a great camera, I really had a lot of fun with it.

Email sent!

I'm going to look for some old pics... :D

I just told Brandi about this and I got the dirtiest look from her, she said "don't even think about it!"
It was worth a try :D Thats funny I told Jen about that D3100 and all I got was a dirty look. I guess I shouldn't push my luck:D
Daniel,I have a extra full size tri pod that you can have. just let me know.
Y'all take care !

Too funny, lol! I didn't really have to ask about my camera, just went ahead and bought it, nothing she can say about it then! I don't really recommend that approach though!

Daniel, my D200 was rebuilt with a new shutter after 112,000 actuations! The good thing about Nikons is all their shutters are rated for 100,000 clicks on their SLRs. I think you will really like that lens on there, it gets really good reviews optically, I have some much more expensive lenses that show the same characteristics optically! I will recommend you pick up a UV filter and just leave it on the lens at all times, its cheap insurance, better to scratch or break a $15 filter than a $200 lens from dropping it. Plus it will make your outdoor photos look better.
