But can you "push" your knife through a phone book? Not ram it through.
A Hartsfield pushes right through.
And a DFK.

Damn it Rolf(!) Now I have to go make a Ti friction folder. Thanx a lot man, just what I need, another knife to grind :D

Actually, I have an idea, I really liked Daniels Ti/silver twill fricky design, but I'm going to make one even lighter and with a stronger handle! I have some CF/Kevlar composite material that was scrap from an upper atmospheric weapons project I worked on a while back, this stuff is ridiculous. Thin, light, crazy stiff! I just need the hardware, maybe I'll order some Ti chainring bolts. When I get it going I will send it off to Daniel to have the edge carbidized.

Mornin y'all!

Daniel, I just realized that this post ^^ makes it sound like I'm just going to copy your design, not the case, your design just sparked the fire so to speak. I know it isn't a big deal, but just want to be clear about that!

Damn, I am working on a cup of cold brewed coffee right now, done the japanese style and holy smokes am I wired up! This is some good stuff! I forget what brand the "brew contraption" is, but it looks like a crazy mad scientist method for making coffee, it takes roughly 12 hours to make one batch. Strong, but very smooth.

This is the "machine" ice and water in the top, drip at about 1.5sec interval, coffee in the middle, brew in the bottom. Its about 3 feet tall.

bako- No pic!
Nick Rossi made a forged chisel ground blade for my Svord peasant knife and he shipped today. :)

And FAAAAAAAAAAACK! I just burned myself. Usually burns don't even register anymore, but this one is on the underside of my wrist!

Nah. burns are best ignored. You don't want to encourage them.

See? Doesn't even hurt anymore!

So what's the deal with this?

Part of the reason I've jumped into knife collecting with both feet, and bought over a dozen customs in about 12 weeks, is that I happened to land here at the very beginning. Daniel and this group of people who have coalesced around him and his products are the reason I've taken to a new interest this way. I can't see spending several hundred dollars on a small piece of metal unless there is a responsive maker, and some sort of support community around the product.

So this past October, I bought my first custom knife from a guy named Scott Hurst. He's a protege of Tim Lively based in Western Massachussetts, and he's of the 'No power tools" set. Immediately- I'm talking like the next day- I sent him an email asking some questions about the knife, and if perhaps he'd be interested in making another for me with a lefty chisel grind to match my new righty grind. About a month passed without a response, so I mailed him again. Nothing. A few weeks later, I saw he had a Facebook profile, so I sent him a friend request with a note explaining who I was, and that I had bought one of his knives.

Nothing.

So being the kind of person I am, I sold the knife to a friend. I liked the knife a lot (not loved. I actually ADORE everything from DF that I have, and refuse to part with any of them) but there's something missing from it for me, if I can't ask the damn guy a lousy question about his product, let alone give him even more of my hard-earned fun money for another, then I'll spend my money someplace else.

My question is, who does shit like that? I mean, if a diner asked a question about the composition of a plate of food, or asked for more, and got nothing but silence, where would I be? In a trade where your rep- not to mention your sales levels-is determined ENTIRELY by word-of-mouth, how can someone simply ignore their clients? One happy restaurant customer tells two friends. An annoyed customer tells 10 friends. I'm annoyed enough by Scott Hurst that I'm no longer interested in owning his knife.

I know I'm an aggravating prick sometimes, but WTF? Who does that?

We have built up something special here and it is because of you guys and the fact that I love what I do.

I will always do my best to stay up with communication, sometimes I miss an email here or there I am sure but every one is VERY important to me.

I like the forum because everything can be open and interactive, it is very important to me to have good communication.

I support my family 100% with knifemaking, expect things to keep getting bigger here on the DFK subforum... well besides me! :D

By the way, this is just in reference to myself, what other makers do is not my business. I'm too busy cranking out the goodness!

Please don't think I'm just trashing Scott. I really meant it as more of a testimony to the special thing you have built here, Daniel.

No, I get you! :D It pisses me off when people won't contact me... I just like to stay separate from other makers as far as anything negative goes.

I really appreciate the kind words and it is always great talking to you and everyone else.

I heard the kind words about the other makers work too...

I'm just doing the best I can with what I have.

Thanks again and it is great to hear that you are liking the way I do things!

You're definitely doing this right, broseph.

One blade at a time, one buyer at a time.

I'm liking watching what Geoff from Tuffknives is doing- he's moving fast from pimping, to fixed blades, to frikkies, and right into framelocks. He's got dedicated, hardcore followers like us, here.

One thing I noticed about the TK I just got, is the packaging. Not that I'm hung up on stuff like this, but "Perceived Value" is where it's at in the restaurant industry. Geoff went and got custom little tupperware boxes with the TK logo screened on the front, but that's where he stopped- the knife sits loose inside, and the COA is a little white paper sticker with a handwritten "#1 of 1" on it. Again, not to diminish his efforts, but that's where he stopped. I think I would have folded a little scrap of sheet metal around the knife, heated it, and pressed a custom piece of foam liner for it. I probably would have tossed in 2 extra gold ano chainring bolts, since they tend to get damaged by steel screwdrivers. My sheaths all come with an extra Chicago screw, and two extra washers in case one splits, or a Chicago screw gets scuffed up and they want a fresh one.

I'm most emphatically NOT knocking the guy, but I always look for those little details that add to my sense of satisfaction.
