Rolf - also something like 400-600 grit is pretty standard and the color darkens at each stage... for the Loveless look you need to go to a high grit (2000 here) and then lightly buff.

A good example of the color "change" is regular black canvas micarta, it almost looks white at low grit then gets to a nearly black once polished.

Thank you very much, Daniel! I might try to make a modern penny knife folder.
More snow here too. Up to 4".
Hi DFerz!

Yo X!

Cool Rolf! One thing I was thinking on the penny folder is just leave the pivot tolerances "loose" and the blade should self center between the ripped slot...

These penny folders are intriguing. Rolf, basically they are a friction folder, right? The blade stop is against the metal collar?

I'm gonna have to give it a go... I think I can do it.

Slow morning at work, and of course on a beautiful day when I have to work the wife decides to take the kid out of town for the day. On my days off she has a ton of stuff planned and I can't get much of anything done. Did some shooting the other night though, with the camera. She had a cake/cupcake order she wanted me to take photos of last minute, so I guess that was fun. Nothing special, got it just about perfect in 3 shots, pretty standard set up.

Anyways, make it great fellas!

Dang it , Rolf . You are spreading Penny knife fever all over the forum! Now you have me wanting to make one......even though it will cost about $20 to make a Penny knife these days. :D M4 / Ti Penny Knives... hmmmmmm

Do it! You should make one.

Thanks, Daniel! I will try that.
Now, where the heck can I find a mill??
:D

I'd seriously consider just ripping the slot and getting to it, there is a chance it may rub doing it that way but who cares on something like that. Or find someone with a big, rigid mill as that is a decnt cut... otherwise I'd jump on it.

If I weren't so busy i'd say we all try... but that might be a cool thing to try anyways!

Do it! That would be cool and work well with your style! When I have more money I am buying a Tupper!

I'm itchy! ...been grinding carbon fiber. It seriously tastes like artificial sweetener...

Gang- Whoever wants to make a penny knife, do it!
Let the blade rub or hit the handle groove or whatever. It won't affect anything. This is a using knife!!
I will not use a metal bolster on mine. Just the Micarta.

I've got a plan and 95% of the materials already. Tools are no problem either. Might even try turning a handle of the lathe too.

Rolf, if I make a decent one on my second try, I'll send it your way!

I need to find time for some hobby knifemaking! seriously...

When I lived in the Caribbean a guy I crewed with carried an Opinel no 8... he went around the world with it. I had to get one a couple years back and really like it.

If I make one it won't have a lock ring either, just friction style.

I have a folder with a detent lock drawn up, I'd like to do a run but they are in the distant plans.

I worked out the (near) final lock geometry on the flipper and it is looking really good!

One screw and the pivot... that's it for hardware! It will have a couple of pressed in dowel pins to keep everything aligned rigidly.

Thank you, Xander.
Daniel! Make sure you post some pix.
The pivot screw will be the only hardware on my penny.
'Appy Monday!

Morning y'all.

Work is in full swing for me here, also trying to plan around a less than reliable employee. Just don't ever know if they're going to show up. Don't know how long they will last though...

I like the micarta idea for the penny folder. I'm just trying to work out the pivot details, should I shim it when I peen the rod to give it some play, or should I just leave it and work it a little bit after to loosen it up. I think a copper collar would look handsome on some green phenolic I have.

Blade shape looks like it evolved from not having a nail nick, easy to pinch and pull out. I may go smaller on mine and put a nail nick in.

Such a simple design, easy to modify and adjust!

Maybe I'll do one in red with a tanto tip... :D

Make it great fellas!

There was a thread over in the geriatric ward (traditional forum) about them. Some pics and history behind them too.

This day is flying by for me! 1.5 hours to go! Keeping on schedule too! "Didn't have to use my AK, damn it must be a good day."
