February 2022 Buck of the Month - 891, GCK Spear Point, 3V, Black G10

I'm all over this. grabbed one. been an ask for me in the past. sadly I predict this one won't sell well.......least to most participants here. also kinda pricey......

At first glance it does seem pricey, but when you look at what the asking prices are for regular GCK knives on ebay, being touted as "rare discontinued"... this knife is a bargain with the upgraded 3V steel.

I missed out on getting a GCK before they were discontinued... not gonna miss out again. :)

Solid points. This was my thinking to make the purchase. Premium 3V steel in an already discontinued knife; everyone always wants the knife after it is discontinued ! : )

I’d have never thunk it 🤔 looks like a good set up with 3v and g10 tho. I’m gonna pass as I have plenty fixed blades and not much room left.
Glad for the fellas that like the GCK knives, I know jb will 😆

yes Sir. you're right on that

good point. haven't looked at discontinued prices lately. actually didn't even consider that until Your Name Goes Here mentioned the discontinued point.

I can't see how this 3v will disappoint, if one likes this knife already. love the 5160, but 3v....even better

Considering the 3V, I think the price is pretty fair. Not only is the steel fairly expensive (and there's a good chunk of it on this knife), but I've found you have to take things pretty slow when grinding 3V because it heats up so dang quickly. I can't imagine Buck can churn out 3V blades nearly as quickly as something like 5160.

This is a pretty cool offering, I just have zero use for a combat knife. Gonna have to pass.

This is a beautiful offering and in 3V a fair price. I don't have much need for it unless I were to wake up in Ukraine tomorrow. It is a beautiful knife which surprised me when I saw it. Great job Buck. These will sell out. Looks an awful lot like the CPK Double Edge Fighter.

Full tang? Are the discontinued 891's the same? I can see some great Customs using this as the starting point. Just because I'm so into 112's I really have to pause another half hour....maybe.

yes. regular ones in 5160 are full tang too. same way.

Well, at least they didn't axe the GCK completely (yet)! To those that might not know, the suspension system for the knife is fantastic, and the blade profile is great (I've got a minor review of sorts on an older thread about this knife). Balance is superb, and it feels better in the hand than the tanto version. The spearpoint is the better version of this knife overall in my opinion, with some points going to the tanto version for utility purposes. That said, really nice choice on Buck's end for going with the spearpoint here.

...I won't be buying this knife, as I already have 2x of the 5160 versions. If you need a GCK, I am confident in saying that the version presented here is superior. Investment quality knife for sure, and one you can also use!

The price is great when you compare it to the discontinued 5160 versions’ prices that they are now selling for on flea bay. Sold prices are $225 and up for the discontinued versions.

I have the 891 and I like the grip and the balance, but I don’t really care for the blade grind. It is fine for an all around utility knife-stout. But, as a slicer it is poor, it is too thick.

I'm sure there's a thread on here somewhere in which we muse about the knives we'd like Buck to make. For slicing... a lot of things to consider, especially durability. For me... I think the GCK is all-round excellent, with most of the necessary compromises made in good taste. That said, the most impressive knife I own is a Buck Kalinga Pro. It's a phenomenal slicer, but between the grind and the steel (brittle S30V), its only purpose should be carving meat. After that, the knife to consider might be a Buck 104 - I still have a lump on my left index finger from an accident in testing that knife on kindling - the glove on my hand did nothing! Ergonomics do leave a little to be desired, however.

...Now, if they wanted to machine the scales of the 104 like they do the GCK... :D

I picked one up to go with the other two... I like them. Was surprised to see them hit today though, as my Sweetie and I were out shopping all afternoon. What a surprise to see that email when we got home a bit ago.. Glad it wasn't some blow-out in 4 hours super-special 112 😂 I hate missing the really hot ones. Few still left right now.

I got one. My first BOTM. I've been meaning to pick up one or two of the GCK knives for a while, but like many, I waited too long and now they are discontinued. The aftermarket prices on them combined with the upgraded steel on this BOTM made this decision easy for me.
