Fighting windmills(or the futility of fighting my issues)......

Again as you often do, Roger, you take things to the personal level when you personally have not been addressed.
Because you don't see me here does not mean i'm not here. I read and look alot. I don't post much because of the prevailing attitude here. Perhaps if it were more welcome feeling in here instead of the feeling of having to earn your place in some sort of convoluted pecking order I and more people would feel like their contributions would be merited here. While we're on the subject of contibutions, what do you do for this site as a whole as opposed to this small clique in this single subforum?

My response was not personal - except perhaps to the extent that it has pointed out the partisan nature of your participation here - a point which is self-evident and which you don't really seem to deny.

Otherwise, I merely pointed out that the reality of a thriving custom knife subforum does not accord with your characterization of an exclusionary clique of alternately hostile and sycophantic members. The place you describe is a place where surely no-one but those terrible six (whomever they might be ;) ) would want to participate. Yet it seems that people do participate here and in significant numbers. I participate quite regularly here - in fact - almost exclusively in this subforum. You don't, regardless of how much lurking you claim to do, or your self-serving stated reasons for doing little else.

I don't doubt that some feel disaffected to the point where they don't want to participate - just as I don't doubt that the reasons they hold will be as varied as the people themselves, rather than the ONE singular reason that you and your buddy who cannot be criticized in any way suggest. Unlike you, and others, I don't purport to speak for anyone but myself. Obviously, the people who do participate here (by that I mean, not you) do so freely and find it worthwhile. If they didn't, they wouldn't. Simple as that.

Joe - gotta say I laughed right out loud at his chracterization of you representing the 'Gentleman's Club Ideal'. Just too freakin' funny. Swing and a miss.

Roger

All seriousness aside, we just need to go fishing more often... :D

This, but the river up here isn't completely frozen yet, but there is enough ice along the edges to keep the boats out of the water:(

I too am a new maker, and every bit of criticism and praise I have received here has helped my grow as a knife maker.

Karda take it easy you don't seem to like this section of blade forums or the people in it give us a chance we will grow on you :)
Not true. I like this forum and most of the people. I feel most have much to offer, even Steven has alot to offer here, when he can be on point tactfully without all the other BS. I just find the scope here at present very limited. As long as i dont feel the need to hose myself down with lysol after being here, i may contribute more rather than lurk.

Roger it's okay I always wanted to be an elitist ( did I spell that right ) :)

One look at the cove shows the maturity level on some of the forums

Opinions are just like @ssholes, everyone has one.

In the olden days, there was a genuine effort to advance the craft and provide guidance for improvement to new makers. I prefer simple honest opinion, even if it is rough around the edges, to politically correct participation awards. That is just my opinion.

Whenever I am asked to critique a knife, I do not pass out Kumbaya back slaps. I will actually honestly tell you what I think, and it may NOT be what you were expecting, or hoping to hear. This most often occurs in private for that very reason. In the current (Spring 2012, Page 10) issue of Blade, I was asked about what was currently exciting in the world of hand forged knives. I mentioned two recent projects by two of the very best knife makers (my opinion) in the country. Everyone is perfectly free to agree or disagree with my answer. They are also free to conclude that my judgement has been impaired by corn whiskey or dementia and is defective. C'est la vie, I have gotten used to it.

There is an objective reason, why the same makers names are continually raised by some of the more knowledgeable collectors, in this forum.

It is because they make the best knives, and we consciously seek the best work to improve our collections. QED

And FWIW, STeven has forgotten more than I know about custom knives. I highly value his slightly abrasive opinions.

You are free to have your own opinion.

Many people think the partisan nature of your involvement is quite obvious.

If it would not betray any confidences, would you please identify those individuals?

TIA!

BTW - Would you please explain what you mean by the word "partisan?" Just trying to undersdtand. TIA, again.

Many people think the partisan nature of your involvement is quite obvious. :D Not that I'm presuming to speak for anyone, naturally. ;) Indeed, it's hard to fathom how such a comment could be interpreted that way. :)

I've invested hundreds of hours of time in this forum. I don't really go to any other forums and probably tap in to this one at least a dozen times a day.

I'm finding myself offended by the disparaging remarks made about this forum in this thread.

This place isn't about just one person or even half a dozen. It's about all of us, and when a moderator, (who never ever posts here or otherwise contributes) comes in here on the occasion that one of our brethren exposes his personal opinion about his 'home' forum, and makes disparaging comments about the forum as a whole...well, I just don't understand where that comes from.

I've said my peace. I love this forum and don't expect any grown men to change their ways just because I find their outlook dissimilar from mine, or even irritating. This is coming from one who has probably suffered as much abuse as anyone here, and yet, I am still here. This forum is healthy.

Wow I'm part of a genlemans club that's awesome I never thought I'd get in one :) Is it the kind with strippers if so I nominate Steven to dance first

Usually when I go to a country club for a wedding people hand me there keys to park there car so this is great news to me :)

What this forum needs are people with a better sense of humor, shorter posts - and STeven definitely NOT dancing a strip.

I'd sit down and buy EVERY ONE of the poster's a beer, who've contributed to this thread, 'cuz I respect you all.... Including Karda!

CLAK: Thanks for that book you wrote. Damn, you stored that up. ;)

The only problem with this Gentleman's Club is our secret handshake: It requires Bandaids every time. :p

Karda -apparently, the obvious and deliberate satire in my "Many people think" comment went right over your head. Perhaps others as well. Notwithstanding the smilies and winkies and such. OF COURSE such a statement would be purporting to speak for others, and a pathetic attempt to bolster my view by attributing the same view to countless, nameless others. But some here would be more capable of seeing that if it came from me, versus their good buddy. Looks like that proved true.

Now if you'll pardon me, I have to retire to the elitist gentleman's club where Joe Paranee will be presiding over stuffy session of snobbery. Or something like that.

Lorien - well said indeed.

Roger

Joe Paranee for Treehouse President!

Why not knock it all off and talk knives. The good, the bad, and the ugly of KNIVES. Stop talking about each other. I don't come to this forum section for the BS. I am here for the knives.

Without chucking personalities into the mix knife collecting would be boring!!!

This is what makes collecting knives more enjoyable than stamp collecting..........................
