i'd reckon that a passaround of this knife would prove most interesting. especially with winter around the corner![]()
Although I am more of a tactical knife guy, this one sure looks like a winner. Congrats MistWalker on your new knife.
Anyone put a new set of scales on one of these yet? I'd love to see pictures. Just got mine and really like it. Heck, like it enough to buy a new sheath for it and looking for a new set of scales next. Then I'm going to buy a second and try and wear them out. ;-)
MW - great job.

A weird coincidence that this thread re surfaces a day after I checked it out at a local knife shopMy first thought was what a nice blade, my second was it needs a bit thinner set of scales. Don't get me wrong, the scales are nicely contoured and very grippy, just a bit to big for me.
Looks good, dude! I know Schrade (Taylor Brands) doesn't always make the best stuff, but I have to admit I've been impressed by some of their fixed blades (such as the Chris Reeve knock-offs), and it looks like they did a great job executing your design. Hopefully this is a sign of a new direction for them. It's about time they stopped copying other folks and got some designers of their own--and it looks like you're just the guy to do it!
Had mine for a while now, it's a sick blade, especially for the price. There's not a whole lot this knife can't handle in the bush.
I was looking at tutorials for making your own micarta a while ago, I think this knife would be a prime candidate for a first attempt(and possibly a better second attempt).
I was originally supposed to design a few, this one and a couple of lighter knives...but it seems I was a bit picky about steel type and country of origin so now I have to wait a bit on the others...see how this one does.
What's the country of origin? I was under the impression that everything they made these days came from China. Taiwan perhaps? Sorry if it was mentioned earlier in the thread--if it was then I missed it.
It's really great that they asked you to do a few designs for them. I have a design I'll be submitting to Condor for review, but I have to prototype it myself. If they decide not to do it then I'll just make 'em myself! That initial startup fee for the blank cutting is a b**** though.![]()
nice, well thought out design. it's soo nice to see a surviva; oriented knife without the Rambo features; hollow handle, saw teeth and other widgets. just a solid knife with a sheath that allows for stashing a mini-kit or something. i'd love to see it available in green or tan instead ov just black, but at this price point i'm not gonna hold my breath. micarta scales instead of the kraton would have been realy nice tho.
Oh man, congratulations!
Can I ask you, how detailed info has the designer to give to get the interest of knife manufacturer (in your case)? Tons of documents?
You get right down to it, the most tactical blade I have is the one in my hand when trouble comes knocking. If the only knife I have at that point is the Leatherman Squirt on my key ring I'll be praying while I run. On the other hand, if I'm hiking with this Schrade on a pack strap, I don't think 2-legged snakes will give me a second look. Thanks man, I wanted it to have some tactical influences...but be really tough in a survival situation.

I'm glad I saw this thread. This knife is now on my list to buy in the near future. Thanks for sharing your success with us.
Wow, this thread is from a time when I wasn't online alot. Totally missed this knife!
It looks awesome on the pictures and is made of materials I love. Oh and the price is very tempting, too!
I feel the same need to buy this knife that I felt when Böker came out with Chad's subcom folder!
I'm not a big fan of choils and recurve blades from a practical perspective, but always wanted to have one of those.
Yes, I had a choice between China and Taiwan and China wasn't really an option for me. A lot of people see them as the same but I see a lot of difference between the two on a few levels.
Tell me about it. I already know the costs of getting blanks cut out and I'm having it done where I used to work and have friends there.
Since this knife's been out for awhile, how's the edge holding up (wear resistance) on that 1075?
- Thanks!
Good question, I'll have to ask the people I've given them too. I've yet to hold on to one for more than a few weeks and then give it to someone in need of a knife that size. They would still shave hair when I passed them on, but I had never done all that much with them either.
Last info I have is that they did go with the 1095 I originally specified. Historically I have liked the heat treat on Taylor's hi-carbon knives a lot.
