Finally Got The Production Model

Although I am more of a tactical knife guy, this one sure looks like a winner. Congrats MistWalker on your new knife.

Anyone put a new set of scales on one of these yet? I'd love to see pictures. Just got mine and really like it. Heck, like it enough to buy a new sheath for it and looking for a new set of scales next. Then I'm going to buy a second and try and wear them out. ;-)

MW - great job.

A weird coincidence that this thread re surfaces a day after I checked it out at a local knife shop:cool: My first thought was what a nice blade, my second was it needs a bit thinner set of scales. Don't get me wrong, the scales are nicely contoured and very grippy, just a bit to big for me.

i'd reckon that a passaround of this knife would prove most interesting. especially with winter around the corner :)

I'll order another one and see about maybe doing that.

Thanks man, I wanted it to have some tactical influences...but be really tough in a survival situation.

Thanks man, glad you like the design. Trentu put cocobolo scales on one, it looks really good, but I'm still waiting on him to post pics over here.

Thanks man. No offense taken at all...I liked them on paper, and they are very grippy... but they feel a bit fat to my hand too.

Looks good, dude! I know Schrade (Taylor Brands) doesn't always make the best stuff, but I have to admit I've been impressed by some of their fixed blades (such as the Chris Reeve knock-offs), and it looks like they did a great job executing your design. Hopefully this is a sign of a new direction for them. It's about time they stopped copying other folks and got some designers of their own--and it looks like you're just the guy to do it! :D:thumbup:

Had mine for a while now, it's a sick blade, especially for the price. There's not a whole lot this knife can't handle in the bush.

I was looking at tutorials for making your own micarta a while ago, I think this knife would be a prime candidate for a first attempt(and possibly a better second attempt).

Thanks man, glad you like the design. Schrade once made some of my favorite knives in the world. They were simple designs yes, but that was a lot of the draw to them for me. I carried an old 165OT Woodsman for a lot of my hunting and trapping years, and i could put an edge on my old Deer-slayer that few knives could surpass. Even now they have an awesome heat treat on their hi-carbon steels. In all of the models of this knife I have handled so far I have been really happy with the edges they put on them.

I was originally supposed to design a few, this one and a couple of lighter knives...but it seems I was a bit picky about steel type and country of origin so now I have to wait a bit on the others...see how this one does.

I don't blame you, I think I am going to try new handle scales on one too. I have seen some really nice ones done in micarta and cocobolo.

What's the country of origin? I was under the impression that everything they made these days came from China. Taiwan perhaps? Sorry if it was mentioned earlier in the thread--if it was then I missed it.:o

It's really great that they asked you to do a few designs for them. I have a design I'll be submitting to Condor for review, but I have to prototype it myself. If they decide not to do it then I'll just make 'em myself! That initial startup fee for the blank cutting is a b**** though. :p

nice, well thought out design. it's soo nice to see a surviva; oriented knife without the Rambo features; hollow handle, saw teeth and other widgets. just a solid knife with a sheath that allows for stashing a mini-kit or something. i'd love to see it available in green or tan instead ov just black, but at this price point i'm not gonna hold my breath. micarta scales instead of the kraton would have been realy nice tho.

Yes, I had a choice between China and Taiwan and China wasn't really an option for me. A lot of people see them as the same but I see a lot of difference between the two on a few levels.

Tell me about it. I already know the costs of getting blanks cut out and I'm having it done where I used to work and have friends there.

Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted...a simple, tough, durable knife that would function well in a fight if needs be but not really designed from a tactical perspective. I have talked to Morgan about perhaps offering it in a different color also but I really don't see it happening any time soon. I'd like to see it too, but honestly I don't think there is enough demand for it.

Oh man, congratulations!
Can I ask you, how detailed info has the designer to give to get the interest of knife manufacturer (in your case)? Tons of documents?

Thank you!

I don't know that it is the same all the time man. For me it just sort of came out of the blue after about a hundred emails of discussions on knife use under varying circumstances and lots of pictures and some drawings.

Wow, this thread is from a time when I wasn't online alot. Totally missed this knife!
It looks awesome on the pictures and is made of materials I love. Oh and the price is very tempting, too!
I feel the same need to buy this knife that I felt when Böker came out with Chad's subcom folder!
I'm not a big fan of choils and recurve blades from a practical perspective, but always wanted to have one of those.

You get right down to it, the most tactical blade I have is the one in my hand when trouble comes knocking. If the only knife I have at that point is the Leatherman Squirt on my key ring I'll be praying while I run. On the other hand, if I'm hiking with this Schrade on a pack strap, I don't think 2-legged snakes will give me a second look. :D

I'm glad I saw this thread. This knife is now on my list to buy in the near future. Thanks for sharing your success with us.

Yeah. Your average Chinese vs. Taiwanese pieces are often very different in terms of overall build quality. They way I see it the U.S. and Japan tie for first on the quality knife production ladder, and Taiwan comes in a close second. Just look at the stuff that CS and Spyderco are having made there.:thumbup:

Disclaimer: Of course really great stuff can come out of China. Hanwei makes some of the best production swords on the market--Paul Chen revolutionized the industry, and they're from China. So anyone else reading this, don't take this as a knock against Chinese knives! Just a comparison of average overall build quality. :)

Since this knife's been out for awhile, how's the edge holding up (wear resistance) on that 1075?
- Thanks!

Good question, I'll have to ask the people I've given them too. I've yet to hold on to one for more than a few weeks and then give it to someone in need of a knife that size. They would still shave hair when I passed them on, but I had never done all that much with them either.

Last info I have is that they did go with the 1095 I originally specified. Historically I have liked the heat treat on Taylor's hi-carbon knives a lot.

O.K. Thanks for the reply.

Got it! :D
This is one heavy knife, OMG! The biggest and heaviest knife in my collection used to be a Buck 119. The Schrade has barely more edge but the 119 weighs almost nothing in comparison. But that's why I bought it, I always wanted a heavy duty chopper like that! I wanted something like a BK9 or Kabar Cutlass but then this smaller Schrade somehow made me forget the bigger knives. This one will ride in my backpack when I go hiking!
The sheath is kinda cool. I'll have to play with it a little more.
