Finally- the official news on Ashokan 2010!

I've been trying to come up with a way for us to roast up some coffee on site, and coming up snake-eyes. Any thoughts?

I quit buying hand-roasted coffee or even grinding my own beans after an ex-inlaw turned me on to the cheapest coffee around - El Pico. Cuban beans, very fine grind, and the best coffee I ever drank. Cafe Bustelo is from the same maker and I think the same beans, just ground for espresso.

Mayhap I'll bring a couple of cans, assuming I get on "the list". :)

If anyone was flying into stewart, for some gas cash I could divert there to pick you up on Friday early morning and drop you off on sunday evening/night.

I have a pickup with room for 2.

got my paper work printed out but have not cut the check and sent it in
will be done this week for sure
will not miss this

Closing in pretty quickly, still waiting on details if I will be able to go this year
as I may have to travel for work :( Fingers crossed!

That's a fantastic shot of Brian Lyttle, Gary! We gotta talk photo this year, so you better be there!

a bit of serious news, 2 years ago the blacksmith's hosted Ari Haksteen, an incredibly talented smith from Holland. Ari introduced the European tradition of the "Nagelbaum" (like Deker's cousin :D) which in Dutch or German means " Nail tree". In shops in Europe they would have a visiting blacksmith forge his or her signature nail, then nail it in along with the others. you would travel around and get to see the different nails on each Nagelbaum. I will ask Tim to bring out the Nagelbaum that was started and I think it would be cool if any of the bladesmith's added they're own signature nail. It can be any shape you want make it unique! Ari's was a pair of clogs you have to see to believe!!!!

Sam,

What sizes of nails are we talking about? Standard "I made them in blacksmithing class" nails, gutter spikes, Nine Inch Nails? Inquiring minds want to know!

The post is a 7" square-ish beam about 7 feet tall. NIN is always good :D I made one last year that was 16" with a 2" square head ;) but most are 5" long with big decorative heads. It is sort of meant to be your maker's mark or a demonstration of your ability or specialty in nail form, or some people just put they're makers mark on a plain head. Here is photos:

Does the tree live outside or under cover?

I'm arriving in Newark on Friday and picking up the rental car around 3pm if anyone needs a lift from there. Returning to Newark Sunday around same time.

Working on my nail. No forging tools other than a 4 oz hammer, 4" vise, and a MAPP torch. NOT a video of me, but a real quick howto on forging them. I need one of the tools from the end used to make the head.

Damn, that's about like taking a leak in a public bathroom and Ron Jeremy is in the stall next to you. . .That's an amazing folder

It certainly is a stout folder and it should be at Ashokan this year too,
my wife's uncle is the keeper of that gem now :)
