Finally- the official news on Ashokan 2010!

Never much fun when it rains, just looks to be a cool weekend I think,
didn't rain last year that I recall, but the times it did, not so nice :(

So, I just finished up a little more pre-Ashokan forging...I'm tired and sore, and going to pay for this heavy tomorrow, but....

Any fellow pipe smokers coming? Anybody want to share around some favorite tobaccos? If so, let me know what type of tobac you like and I'll see what I can pull from the cellar (also, I'll know what type of stuff you're likely to bring and can make sure I pack the right pipes ;) )

See you all soon!

One of my students is coming, I can tell him to bring the toys if anyone wants an informal rapierfighting demo

Good to hear John is coming with one of his hammers, I will show some of the tricks I have learned and maybe some tooling during free forging. ashokan really needs a REaL powerhammer, that LG25 is a joke, a wild uncontrollable loud joke.

I also plan to do some hammer workshop/introduction time during the open forging to make sure that folks who want to test drive an Iron Kiss get a chance to give it a whirl.

Gonna be a fun weekend!

I've never smoked a pipe, strictly cigars on the links and spongeboat. Would you mind a cigar in your pipe aroma? I've got the Teriyaki and cayenne jerky done. I'll make some extra black pepper Wednesday.

Deker: The bluegill were full or parasites and had to be tossed :(

I don't mind at all, smoke 'em if you got 'em I say!

Bummer about the fish though...In theory there should be great fishing across the street at the reservior, it's about 6 or 8 feet low right now so there should be less water for the little bastards to hide in...if only I had the time to go after them...

Getting excited now! Of course, I still have WAAAAAAY too much to do before Butch and I head out tonight. I still have damascus to etch for sale, an oil change to do on the truck, handles to weld on billets for my demonstrations, clothes to pack, etc, etc...

I know that the Michigan crowd is probably enjoying coffee and conversation in the van already.

What are the rest of you doing for final preparations?

Mowing the lawn. :grumpy:

Seriously, minor family drama ate up all of last week's shop time, so I'm coming empty-handed.

That's OK, though. I'm coming with an empty brain, too. Like Stacy said in a different thread, this is my chance to pay strict attention, take lots of notes, and see in action a lot of processes and a lot of experts I usually only read about.

I was talking about it with a friend yesterday and told him "I'm really stoked!"
He said "Is that a bad blacksmith's pun?" :p

Hey Guys,
A few of you have called about bringing up steel to the Hammer In. If anyone needs anything(Sorry for posting this so late.) E-Mail me at njsteelbaron@gmail.com and I'll bring it up with me. I should have a good selection with me, but if you need something different like 1" 1080 square bar or some odd size H-13 then let me know. You've got till NOON on Friday. Mace, you don't get any!!

Packing the beef jerky and a shipping label to ship stuff back. $8 for a UPS label vs. $25 for a checked bag, and no guarantee that my stuff will still be in the bag upon return. I should have shipped my stuff to someone a couple days ago, would have been cheaper and more reliable.

I noticed a critical flaw today, I only have one bag of the easy to chew cayenne but two bags of the black pepper. Sorry, but I don't have time to make more. I'm only bringing about 3 1/2 lbs. of finished meat, only half of what I had hoped to make. But, I'm bringing a dagger instead.

Loading my truck with the things i forgot last year, a towel and pillow foremost among them. Figuring out which bottle or two of scotch to bring, and sighing at the fact that I've only got a few in-progress blades to bring with me and nothing finished. This has been a very very bad year for shop time for me =(

I don't have much to show either. I have not put hammer to steel since January. I will have a couple bottles of fermented barley condensate to share. I hope to bring along some old Thermocouple Temp controllers I have to unload, if I have time to test them tonight. -Doug

I'm not much of a cook.....but I have alot of nice Koa that I'm bringing....I guess you could use it in a smoker:p

but then again, there are probably other uses for it too :D

I'm packed and ready to leave at 4AM....tomorow morning.
I'm bringing up about 50-60 pounds of top grade stabilized wood. I will be selling it cheap to the folks who want it. I also threw in a few tools that are real handy to have.

Since Page seems to think that a keyboard is the top background for quality knife photos, I will now post a shot on my dagger. Details will follow after Ashokan.
