First HEST/F in Australia? Review and pics

i use the jimping just like wire strippers only i didn't have to go dig in my tool box. i cut around the wire then put the wire in the closest size notch and pushed down on the wire with my thumb while pulling the wire through the notch. peels it right off. it was just regular electrical wire putting together a physics experiment with my daughter.

I wanted to see if I could recreate any of these issues on my HEST & fortunately for me my knife does not disengage. I did a spine wack test on my work table and the blade continued to stay locked.

I wonder if the lock bar tension may be the issue for you guys with the closing issue (like Gianni just stated). At least DPX & Linonsteel are fixing the concerns that are arising.

Hi JTC3495 -

There is no need in my case to do a "whack" test, as I can just firmly grasp the blade in the locked position, and wiggle it up and down and the lock will begin to move back and forth on the tang, and eventually it completely disengages from the tang.

I will bend my lock-bar per Gianni's suggestion.

best regards -

Thanks for the objective, impartial review. This is about the knives more than anything else, and it should stay that way.

Oh, I see. You just take the blade out and polish at a certain point and or replace pin with one of three? replacement pins and then bend the lock bar a certain way being careful not to stress the clip and..what is this kit knife we are talking about?

Hi Brennanscott -

Yea - not the best, huh?

I have not had any problems with the clip, and the exposed tip is not an issue, but the lock-bar engagement is a concern.

The rotoblock will keep the lock-bar in place, so it's not like the knife is un-useable, but yes, it definitely could have been much better from the start; no question.

best regards -

I'd really like to just receive mine. Word is the LE's ship out from Italia tomorrow. To RYP and then eventually, hopefully to me (finally).

i bent the bar on mine, so far its worked. we will see if it loosens up with use and wear. mine was not nearly as easy to shut pre bending as the one in the video. there seems to be a huge amount of variance in these. i know you and brennan and many others dislike it because of the graphics or the wave design or simply ryp. i on the other hand do like the design, just suprised and frustrated it wasn't better executed.

I'm actually with you on that one. I wanted one when I saw the prototype then I questioned the need for the Rotoblock, then I questioned the need for the behavior issues of the "designer"(we don't need to revisit that stuff) but originally I did like the concept of the knife. The worst part is seeing all the guys that ended up with an inferior product.

thanks brennan i do appreciate that. i think the knife has potential, the problems with putting that to reality is really frustrating to those who bought it though.

Hopefully we will get the support to fix the issues that was promised. I know I am one of the lucky ones with a good knife so far. I guess time & use will determine what we all end up with.

We got our first shipment of the HEST Folders today & I checked out 7 of them. All 7 exhibited the following: 1) Very good fit & finish 2) Very good blade parking 3) Very good blade lock-up with no blade wobble.

Since these are going to customers, I didn't want to stress the blade too much in order to check the lock-up extensively but the test I did showed no problems.

Overall, it looks like a solid, well built knife.

Looks like patrons for the production model will be receiving theirs before I get my LE.

Still waiting........

Good news.

Stephen - Great review. Thanks.

Notwithstanding the QC issues this knife looks like it could be one of the best hard-use production folders out there (possibly after some tweaking by the owner). I really wanted to get one but I won't. I can't seem to convince myself that Mr. Pelton's character doesn't matter. To me it does. Yes, I've made mistakes and pissed people off, but I've also had to deal with the consequences. Not trying to pass judgement on those who decide to get the knife in the future - it just doesn't feel quite right to me.

I just got back from the post office to pick my Production HEST/F up from Dale at t-k-c. This thing is a beauty. Full strong lockup, No exposed tip, just a bad ass knife.

Damn work or I'd play with it more and take pictures. I'll try to get some up once I get home from work today. It seems they've addressed any issues found in the LE models with the production models, but I have no doubt when the LE owners get theirs back, they'll be just as nice as my production model.

FWIW

I purchased mine based on the knife as rerepsented and not the man selling it. Lionsteel will probably make more off this knife than Mr Pelton and I know I'd sure like to see them keep making knives but to each there own. Nothing new here. Just check the Strider or CRK forums. If it's not the maker that folks have a problem with its the way knife is marked. It's the world we live in.

You're entirely right - it is the world we live in - and generally I just let the egos, politics and gimmicky marketing roll off of my back. Having said that there occasionally occurs an instance where either a product (Bear Grylls Ultimate Super Survival Extreme) or a person (RYP) steps well over the line of reasonable and it warms my heart when they're called on it.
