First knife suggestion

Hi there,
The majority of you has suggested me Cold Steel and Spyderco. Can I have just a very short list of the best brands (possibly in order)? Thank you very much!!!

With Self Defense capabilities in mind, I'd say your best bet are folders from:

Cold Steel (Talwar, Rajah, Recon, Voyager, AK47, Broken Skull, Espada, Black Talon, Hold Out, Counter Point, Ti-Lite, Tiger Claw)
Spyderco (Endura, Police, Matriarch, Civilian, Military, Szabo, Tatanka, Ulize, Ayoob, Yojimbo 2, Para-Military 2, Pacific Salt, Tasman Salt, P'Kal)
Emerson Knives (Horseman, CQC7, Roadhouse, Persian)
CRKT (Hissatsu, Otanashi Noh Ken, Foresight, M21, Ruger GO-N-Heavy)
Benchmade (Adamas, Anthem, 531, 770, 62, Bedlam, Infidel)
Microtech (Halo V, Combat Trodoon, Ultratech)
SOG (Pentagon Elite, Kiku, Trident, Visionary II, Zoom, Contractor IV)
Gerber (FAST Auto 06, Applegate-Fairbarn folder, Gator, DMF, Icon)
Blackhawk (Be-Wharned, Garra 2)

you also ought to consider folders from ZT, Extrema Ratio, FOX Knives and Boker for some specially capable and purpose-oriented folders
On a more budget friendly side, Ontario (Utilitac 2, Dozier Arrow), KaBar (Mule, Piggyback) and 5.11 also have options that could double nicely in a defensive situation

what happens when someone says something about you and then you show your knife to them to try and scare them away? will they come back with the police or take out a gun or fight you and stab you with your own knife? if you threatened them by showing your knife and the police come, you will probably be thrown in jail. and it will be sorted out in the court room. assuming you have money for bail.

btw what is your price range?

I think the same could be said for a gun. What would you do if you got surrounded by many guys? I would like a lot to have a knife on my own in that situation.

My budget is max 200€, i coud spend also more, but maybe it's better to start with something not very expensive and then decide.

I still have to decide what i want, today for instance i've seen some push knives or some very little knife which holster is the size of the belt and can be put horizontally so it would be very concealed. I'm also considering some wave knife etc. I still need to consider a lot of things and to decide what really should I take.

In all honesty get a Waved Endura model, learn how to use the wave and learn how to sharpen the knife.

The waved Endura will make you ready for self defense and utility situations. Some training classes or atleast watching training videos is still highly recommended

If you aren't familiar with knives and think a "scary" looking knife is going to move the needle with protection, you should re-evaluate your options. Maybe a personal defense class would be a good start.

There is only one answer for the OP and that is:

a Spyderco Para Military 2

end thread

I have not read all the comments as of yet. But I would look at a modest sized fixed blade such as the Kabar EK dagger if it is purely for self defense. Carry it a while and in a year or so consider something else, perhaps an upgrade.

Training is important. But personally i have little interest in that kind of hard core effort. JamesY mentioned in a thread how difficult it is to disarm someone carrying a knife and the damage they can inflict even without training. One needs to consider just what your ultimate purpose is with self defense if you aren't Rambo. My purpose would be for someone to stay the hell away from me and not be an easy mark.
This shows you know nothing about SD or knives. If someone uses a knife OFFENSIVELY it is very dificult to disarm him indeed, but you had ask about using a knife DEFENSIVELY which is a completelly diferent animal.
If you carry a knife for SD without years of training you are already dead or in jail.
On using a knife as a deterent, remember that if you will brandish your knife in front of an unarmed attacker -or even if he is armed with bottle or a stick-you will be on camera threatening the guy with a deadly weapon, and even if you win on the street you will loose in court.Besides,''blades are ment to be felt, not seen'' acording to a saying from the blade culture.

As they say, the best defense is a good offense. The knife or any weapon should be used in whatever fashion suits the situation. I'm no fighter and have little interest in fighting knives or fighting in general. As to the deadly weapon thing.... such things in court are situational. I have little need for a knife to be used primarily for self defense against a human. If my life is threatened (including with fists, bottle, stick, etc.), I shall use whatever tools are available for me to defend myself. My first choice is to exit the situation.

Added: A note on "training"... it's always better to receive training then not. That goes for both knives and guns in terms of self defense use. But it just depends on what your situation is (or you believe it to be) and where you want to go with it. The standard statement.... "get training" is correct but most don't and most will live just fine without it.

If I could carry whatever I wanted (I can't) and wanted to carry a knife for self defense only (I don't) I would seriously consider a Cold Steel Safemaker or something similar. Compact, easily concealed, easily deployed, secure in hand and used in an almost instinctive manner. Everyone knows how to punch, right? Whatever you choose, practice, practice, practice. You may want to consider getting a trainer model at the same time. And forget about brandishing a weapon as a deterrent. Surprise is also a weapon, don't give it away lightly.

Lol plot twist: seems like i will have to leave Austria and (very sadly) go back to my country where if I'm correct, you can carry a knife only in very strict circumstances (i think if you are an hunter etc.), so after ALL this seems like i won't buy any knife at all. Well at least thanks to you guys I've learned some nice interesting things. So probably i'll get just a tactical pen agaha... :(

 A weapon is only a tool . None does the thinking or fighting for you . Make yourself into a fighter and you'll see that there are always plenty of tools available . Start with unarmed training and build on simple weapons skills from there focusing on everyday common implements like the cane / walking stick . If SD is just not really all that important to you, then just stop whining and resolve to be a helpless victim .

You can carry acording to the waffengesetz a fixed blade or a non-locking folder you cant open one handed,if you have a legitimate interest in carrying it.SD is not a legitimate interest acording to your law makers.Carpet cutting, box opening, etc ARE.
I sugest the Spyderco Pingo,Roadie or SPY-DK,or a Victorinox cadet.
But i'm afraid you were looking for Excalibur,a magical tool who will make you invincible. It doesnt matter if its a 5$ knife from a gas station or a 1000$ custom-what counts are the skils and the mind set behind it.Train hard, and you wont be needing any weapons, better yet you wont be needing the skills you learned ;)
A knife is a very bad choice for SD,anyway. You jacket,an umbrella,a flashlight are much more efective tools if you know how to use them,if not you can carry a Claymore and still be a victim.

NOOOO!He said he can carry what he wants, but think about the face a cop will make when he will find a push dagger on him.

If "anything is legal" what's the difference? Are the police going to frown at a 3" push dagger and smile at a 7" bayonet? If the police had their way no one would carry anything, anywhere, at any time. Until that day, legal is legal as far as I'm concerned. YMMV.

Spyderco Military. Very Light. 4" of steel, very concealable, easy to draw and open, leave closed and use as a bludgeon weapon. Cant go wrong.

The best weapon is always your mind! Good job on being mindful and adapting to your surrounding. Good job.

Continue, grasshopper. Sharpen the mind! Carry a knife for SD? When you're ready, you won't have to.
