I think they feed mostly on grasshoppers/bugs, snakes (seen a few swim across pond if my Step-Mom, and her 28 gauge doesn't sink them)... small turtles, and there's always a ton of holes in the grass from crayfish.
Haven't seen any baby ducks paddling around; but I wouldn't put that off a 20+ inch 4+ lb bass' diet?!
The ponds are pretty well established, and doing well on their own; we do like to toss them a freebee from time to time... but nothing on a regular basis.
I was pleasantly surprised to have caught 10+ hand sized large-mouth bass; hope they have their big parents DNA?!
Nice trout. Never seen one so fat. My trip to the pond today resulted in this thing attacking my 5" swimbait. It was hooked in the mouth then was dislodged but the stinger got him. I was just dialing in my new Garcia pro rocket for a trip to the bay.
I got taken for a smaller ride today, out throwing worms under a float for bluegill using ultralight gear, vintage gear at that, when suddenly my float just goes "bloop" and disappears! I set the hook and my rod doubled over immediately I'm using 6# copolymer line, 5# leader, #12 hook. Turns out it was a 20"+ channel cat!!! Landed it, but just clipped it off at shore. Sadly, my phone was in the truck and no pics available.
I dropped by the lake to decompress after a stressful tradeshow day, fly fishing with a small black wooly bugger in the weeds and ended up catching enough panfish to make a nice dinner. Took home a nice crappie, two blues, and a small rainbow trout. Put back a bunch of smaller sunfish. They just wouldn't leave that fly alone.
Nothing really big, but certainly big enough to make a meal of (they were delicious), and for this location, at this time of year, I'll take it.
