Fishing, and hunting reports (share yours)

Congratulations to both of you! What a great day. Thoughts on the FK2 and DEK1 for field dressing?

Just one guys opinion...

FK2 vs DEK1 as a big game hunting and skinning knife.

So I used both of these knives on the recent deer hunt and skinning and these are my thoughts.

Both knives are really nice.

The handle on the FK2 is what makes it a stand out for me. I don't have real large hands but I do buy size large gloves. The bigger handle just fit better and in the ways that I used it, it didn't give me any problems at all. Being 52 years old my hands tend to cramp when I am skinning a deer and trying to hold onto the DEK1's smaller handle made that tough.

The DEK1's blade shape outshined the FK2 by a wide margin. I have the penetrator tip and swedge on my DEK1 and this is what made it shine. When I reversed the knife to cut down the legs of the deer to get the skin off it worked very well. The same goes for cutting right down the belly. Almost gut hook like. I was really impressed. It also sliced right through the breast plate with no problems. My father in law was a butcher for 35 years and he even said "Man this nice is so sharp".

As you can see from pics the blades lengths are almost identical but notice the swedge and pen tip on the DEK1.

I honestly want to contact Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist and see how much he would charge to turn my FK2 blade into an identical copy of the DEK1 blade. Having the DEK1 blade shape and the extra girth and length of the FK2 handle would be in my opinion the perfect Big game knife and skinner.

Thanks

Nice write up. Thank you for taking the time. You should try a BFK. Might be exactly what you're looking for.

I do have a BFK and I will take it on the regular gun season next. I also have a new one ordered on the preorder that I got swedged and signature so that may be the winner! Cant rememebr if I ordered pen tip but hopefully I can add that before its made.

Well the day couldn’t have ended any better. We watched 7 does this evening and then with only about 4-5 minutes of light left to see through the scope this guy walks in at 75 yards. He was full rutting and zeroing in on where the does last were. He stopped broadside right in front of us.

Literally my 12yo son’s 2nd time to hunt today and he gets a 8pt buck. It wasn’t the huge guy he missed this morning but I couldn’t be more proud of him! I started hunting at age 7 with my dad and didn’t get my first buck until I was 16.

Love to see that he's wearing hearing protection. I always cringe when I see people hunting without any kind of ear pro.

Pssshhhhh bow hunter 🙄

🤣🤣🤣

Oh I use a rifle and a muzzleloader too, I take more shots with my phone though lol. I also don’t hunt from tree stands much anymore at all, I like to sneak through the hills stalking up to deer so it makes everything a lot harder, coulda filled the freezer with this nice doe at 20yards but instead I watched her clean her tail for a few minutes before backing out and continuing on

I’m just messing with ya man. If I had more time and money I’ve always wanted to get into bow hunting. But I barely have time for modern. 🤣

Just like everything else, setting up a new bow can get expensive real fast! I’d love to get a recurve but the length would be a pain in the ass I think to get through our woods somewhat easy, the shorter compound really helps when I’m crawling around through the thick crap.

Good recurves and long bows are damn expensive too haha.
