Are the fronts of the scales finished? I was taught to give that area the treatment you want the whole handle to have before gluing since you can’t get to it after.

100%.

Then later I shape them to be comfortable.

I used to do it like that. It made life harder, not easier.

I didn't think anyone would call me out on that...haha

I noticed it as soon as I saw your pic. Wouldn't have said anything but Antdog did first so he gets to be the badguy and I'll just be his minion. ;)

But seriously, it's much easier to finish the front of the scales first. Easier as in less time consuming, and easier to get the finished product looking nice.

Yup....I just think you(all) are wrong in this one instance.....

*I Used to completely finish my kitchen knives like you suggested. With an angle/forward slope. I don't think I'm going to be doing that anymore (for my kitchen designs)

Also, I think you are thinking my fronts are less finished than they really are...?

Let me try to explain with a pic or two.
-im still Not done shaping my scales, but I'm working on them now.

Pinch grip on a chef's knife
Trying to show all angles.
When I lift my index finger see that nice, large shelf I'm able to register against.
That is a Large radius, not a flat. It pulls the finger in comfortably. I will break that corner a little bit later once I'm done, but not much.

This is a Super Comfortable handle!
I really believe I'm making some of the Best handles available today.
Yes, I think and do things differently

I have Lots of opinions on what I want handles to be....haha
🤪

These are good questions, I believe good design should be critical.

What I’m seeing on TV is horrific.
Are you guys ok?

Doing fine. Thanks for checking.

I'm in San Antone. We had our turn a coupla' weeks back. Over the last few days, much of the serious stuff has stayed N/NW and N/NE of us. I'm thankful for that, but not happy to hear about the folks who are going through it.

So glad you are ok. Those other people are going through a very traumatic experience and my heart and prayers go out to them.

Thanks for checking in bro 🙏🏻

Is that san mai? It looks like mono with hamon. Just curious.....not calling you a liar. :)

Sure sounds like you were, but it’s san mai here’s a link to another knife that is made by them as well

And here's a photo of the spine of my knife that you can see the distinct three layers that make the blade up.

I wasn't. I was genuinely asking, tried to show my intent with a smiley. You might be reading too much into text.

However, I did ask because I know nothing about that company or specific knife, but I do know a TON about san mai and hamon and how they look polished. I was surprised to see you mention it was san mai because to my eye, it had the telltale signs of hamon polishing.

The knife you linked to is clearly san mai. The knife you first posted looked like hamon to me, which threw me. I'm fine with admitting I can be wrong and was evidently fooled in this case. My apologies if you took offense.

Where my progress stops today....
Still need final clean up on handle, blade, and edge....and probably some kydex

Idk if I'm doing anything tomorrow?
I'm just happy that at the end of the week it looks like a knife(s)

Those handles look great! neutral, comfortable and practical. Nice blade profiles as well.
