Fixed blades

I want to say it was @Seedy Lot who always said properly treated 1075 was superior to 1095. Somewhere along the way 1095 got the reputation for being super tough but I'm unsure if the numbers back that claim up.
1095 isn't a tough steel, but many a esee/becker (though slightly different than 1095 it's 0170-6) take hella beatings without failure, geometry and Rockwell obviously contribute to its durability in those instances.

What happen to Will's blade isn't a failure of 1095, it's 100% a failure of heat treat and or knock off.

I asked the seller where he got it from just out of curiosity, but I’m sure he’s on the up and up.

I got it from CapitalizedLiving CapitalizedLiving and he’s been here nearly 20 years. Has 214 positive feedback, no negative or neutral.

I’m putting this one solely on Böker’s doorstep unless I hear differently.

If this shit IS 1095 it was surely not heat treated right. If it’s not, then it’s some kind of pot metal bullshit they tried to pass off thinking dudes would just put these on the mantle and not use em.

Are you going to contact them?

I would like to know what they say, other than, you voided the warranty by batoning the blade.

Yes, I will definitely take it up with them.

In the meantime, I showed the seller what happened and he instantly refunded me. He is 100% legit, and I knew it all along.

I will see what Böker says and if they make it right I will absolutely send the money back to the seller. I did have plans for the knife, put a fair amount of elbow grease into it, and expected and wanted it to work well.

It isn’t anybody’s fault but Böker, and at this point I’m more curious about why it failed than anything else.

Here is my full, unabridged report on the Böker Wenger Tracker.

Few whacks with the wooden baton:

…..aaaand, it broke. It’s shït.

If you look closely you can see that it not only broke across the tang, it split lengthwise down the blade and tang as well.

This cannot be properly heat treated 1095. No way in hell. My wooden baton put dents in the damn spine.

Oh well, Busse Combat to the rescue. This one split the logs no problem.

You are not alone with that failure there are a few clips on YT about that.
FWIW there is a V2 version out that should be better.

That's really nice of the seller, if you say he's good to go than he's good to go in my book. The occasional lemon isn't unheard of it just sucks when we draw the short straw. Boker should hop on owning this or it's an UGLY look.

I've broken my share of blades, I've never seen one break both directions like that. Denting from wood indicates it's soft, but cracking running both directions looks like a to hard problem. Some serious cluckery with that one.

Maybe it was differentially heat treated (in reverse?)

Just unbelievable. How do you even get steel so thick to fail that way? “Oh! There’s another zero there!”

Agreed. I was actually kicking around the idea of using this knife as the basis for a group buy. You know, give it to a maker with a small order for copies.

Depending on the maker/cost, I would probably be in for one of these. The lines are beautiful, although an upgrade to the pins wouldn't hurt. Always loved the finger choil design - simple and effective.

Sheath looks original! That was a super cool snag man, congrats ;)

I agree, I think That knife has Beautiful lines.....I feel It fits into my type/style.
I wish I had available time. Id solicit you, but I'm booked this year. :/
Haha.... Some lucky Maker will have a Blast with those

Sorry about the break AntDog AntDog
That is unfortunate!

I did a little bit of chopping and have to say the smatchet works fine for me.
It bites in but doesn’t stick.
Hews off some chunks which is great.
Splits like a champ.
The weight really lends itself to these uses.
One of my tests is to see if it can cut freestanding briars and fennel. It completed that task well for the weight and thickness too.
