Fixed blades

I WANT to like fixed blades. Hell, I DO like them. I just don’t find them useful, except in the kitchen.

I don’t camp, and when I need a chopper, I go straight for a hatchet.

What I Do have:

- Glock field knife
- Mora Companion
- Old Timer Sharpfinger (80s Vintage)

I think I’d like one of those Canadian boots and trout knives one day. Might use it as a kitchen knife.

You just have to keep looking for the right one...

I'm in the same boat. I only own (gasp!) 2 fixed blades. I won a Becker BK-5 sharpened by Jerry Fisk on a giveaway here on BF almost ten years ago, and never used it, except once when my ex perfectly bifurcated a large tree spider with. I gave it to my dad, who also never used it, and then I inherited it back.

Last summer, I bought a one off custom camp/chef knife I saw at a knife show. It's made from a rasp, and it looked cool yet useful. I've cut a few things with it, and if I ever get back into camping I'll probably use it more. Beautiful knife though. Green maple handles.

I have a lot of fixed blades but the ones I go back to are the smaller ones that are about bird and trout size, I suggest try a smaller one with a 2.5 to about 3.5 inch blade and find a carry method that works for you, just experiment to see how it goes, then if not for you, that is ok too. Maybe rotate between a folder and fixed. The fun is just the trying new things with different knives. I got hooked into smaller blades because of Duck Childress and JK knives. The two things with smaller knives for me is to have a long enough handle to get four fingers on, and how well does it carry. No neck carry but I still want to try more horizontal carry and I usually carry it in my front left pocket. Lately it has been my Red Meadow Cow bell and I just recently acquired my LTWK Bandit.

I don’t have much use for fixed blades either. Maybe a couple times a year if I go camping with friends and family. But even those trips are happening less and less. But I still like a nice fixed blade now and then. I’m much more of an edc folder guy. Yet sometimes I just can’t help myself if I see a sweet fixed blade that I feel I “must have”.

I fell in love with the LionSteel M3 with olive wood scales so I bought it. I’ve also been interested in a Microtech SOCOM fixed blade , a couple Beckers and an ESEE. I have no real need for all these knives. I just like them. This is where I have to exhibit self-control.
