Fixed fighter--------suggestions???

Leaning more towards bowie and tanto. Open to anything though. Members on here are always introducing some stuff I may not have noticed before.

Tanto you say?

What? Wait 5 years? Aftermarket prices $700-800? Absolutely not. Go to Clinton Knives and get one brand new for $410 in three days.

wow! thanks for the site! Never been able to find a reasonable Randall price like that

Charlie Mike, that is a thing of beauty...and destruction!! Info on that sweet blade please.

I've been looking at all of these recommendations, and I have to ask. What exactly is wrong with the knives made by Ontario, KA-BAR, Cold Steel, and various other companies as far as fighting knives go?

Big Chris had me clutching my wallet with both hands trying to resist one of his fighters recently. Also would love to own a Randall and Steingass.

Nothing if thats what your looking for. They are production knives and are priced accordingly. With the price range listed, your getting into a class above production and into more custom type stuff. If your looking for a good production, those are great. Look at Topps. They have some nice knives at reasonable prices.

NOTE: I am no expert, and this is just my opinion.

CM's chizel, grind is excellent looking! I don't know about fighting knives to much as I've never used one for fighting. But I have used "fighter" styles for other stuff, mostly making walking staffs when fly fishing from branches that were laying around and I've used them at our camp for wood splitting and the like and have even used one for filleting salmon/trout caught from lake Ontario. I've also carried them when on my HD.

All that being said I like bowies plain and simple. John Wagaman out of Ohio isn't a prolific maker by any stretch but he is a master machinist whom is retired. I have one of his model 151's. A better combat type bowie I've yet to find. Traditional looking very well balanced and joy to hold and use. He did a good business with folks at Pope AFB and Fort Bragg as is my understanding.
I also like CS Recon Scouts which I've owned several over the years and currently have a beater SK5 model that hasn't let me down and also the CS TM in SK5 or 01, you can't go wrong with either. My wife a couple of years ago at a garage sale bought me a smaller bowie with a kydex sheath for 25 bucks. Looks like a Mongoose from Mad Dog knives but frankly don't think it is although the similarities are uncanny, no makers mark that I can see but I can attest to the edge holding of it and the ergo's are very good and it is thick steel with a gray coating that is extremely tough. The Ranger Bowie by Von Tempske is nice too.

Look here on the forums at the custom makers, Steingrass and Drew. The last one GL posted was just excellent. Anyways all that being said if CM can make ya one like he is showing ya to your specs I would check him out. Yep. keepem sharp

Well I didn't see Nedflow saying anything but limiting his focus to custom knives, although I could be mistaken on that. And if that's the case and he's looking for sub-$500 options, they might as well be tossed out there for consideration purposes.

Although Ned's the only one who can tell us what he considers to be a fighting knife and not a simple fixed blade multi-purpose knife.

There is NOTHING wrong with any of them.

It's the fighter holding the knife that makes the fight, not the other way around. The knife is simply personal choice if in fact one has a choice at any given time. There are blokes who could do more damage with a BIC ballpoint pen in their hands than most could with a $10,000 knife at their disposal.

Perhaps what you seek is not what you think.

You should get a Randall model 14.
Ahh, great minds think alike.
My first high end fixed blade was a Randall 14. Cost me only 200 used around '97.
Could of kept it, used the hell out of it, and still had it go up in value.

This. Carbon blade is $410 plus you get an awesome sheath.
True, but OP would have to wait 5 years.
Aftermarket prices are closer to 700-800

 No kidding, Thanks for all this info.
That's cheaper than what they go used on the bay.
I can sell a couple of blades easy, to justify that purchase.

PS.
Matt, since we're throwing out ideas for great fighters for the OP and mentioned a few customs, do you by any chance still have that Voorhis MACVSOG?
I loved those pics.

Nostimos,

If I were to go for a fighter/utility knife for hard use without outlaying too much for it, something like this would be near the top of my list:

Pretty tasty aye nostimos?;)

Lots to choose from. Have fun... cracking up. :D
I like the new Busse tanto style knives and I second the Dozier.
