Flashlights

All you guys scoring the new stuff please don't foget to share photos, first impressions and any other thoughts.

Any more real-world input/ thoughts on the Mac Tri EDC? Help push me into it please.

It hasn't come out of the pocket since I got it. Still haven't gotten to use it outside in real dark, buts its damn fine light so far for anything i need it for inside. My only gripe, is that it doesn't have a true moonlight/firefly mode, but they can apparently be programmed with one, and I have a few emails out to folks that do it. I love the Tri-lamp set up, the "wall of light" hotspot suits me wonderfully. I'm already planning on getting a copper version.

Thanks for the info., it's been pretty moonlit around my area recently too, so flashlight has seen an unusual amount of non-use...well, in comparison to more frequent darker conditions. Sky at night is beautiful when it's clear, gotta love stargazing in the Winter.

ETA: I know your moonlit is a light function, one I mentioned is natural reflection of solar energy off our planet's satellite.

Well, I just sold the Prometheus Alpha I've had since late Nov. I didn't get around to saying really anything about it, mostly because I never used it - hence the sale. It was well built, nice to look at and hold, and put out good enough light (to my uneducated eye). The flip side is it was way too big for pocket carry, even with the shorty body I got with it it was only moderately comfortable to carry - too long w/out the shorty body and too fat either way. It's good looks also worked against it to me in that I didn't want to toss such a nice-looking flashlight into my truck or bag. So, it got recycled into cash :)

All that said, I am expecting an HDS Rotary 250 to arrive tomorrow - I'm looking forward to checking it out. I had owned a HDS 170 clicky for a short while but found the UI not to my liking and recycled it as well. I was disappointed to have had to do that since I did like the size (although a tad on the hefty side), build, and light output - although it also could have been a touch brighter. So, hopefully the new one will supply all of the above plus the ability to adjust the beam more easily via the rotary control.

I also dig Ti, as I'm sure most of us do, so I'm eyeballing the Jetbeam TCR10 and SunywayMan v10r Ti+. I'll do a search also, but does anyone have any experience/feedback for either of those? I have a Jetbeam TCR1 (traded the HDS 170 for it) that I've been carrying and using. I like it, but it's not without its own drawbacks - for example I noticed my leg getting warm the other night because it had apparently rotated itself on as I was slipping it into my pocket. I don't think it was the first time because the other day I found it completely dead with a relatively fresh battery in it, I think it may have been on low and went unnoticed..

I got ya.

Carried the TCR1 for a year before I got the Tri, and this is a normal occurrence. The pocket clip kept getting bent out of shape as well. Still really like the light, but echo your issues with the UI.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the clip :) Yeah, mine keeps getting slightly bent to where it'll be loose - it's fallen out of my pocket or gotten caught on stuff a few times now..

I often remove the clips on shorter lights and tie a lanyard on them. I find it more convenient for my needs in that I can pocket or sheath the light and if it submarines in a pocket the lanyard w/ bead allows simplified fishing.

S, the new Rotary HDS will remedy much of what you (and I) listed as cons., save for the weight and UI. But if you know how you want to run, set aside 15-20 minutes, pour a beverage and follow the reprogramming instructions.

I always start by turning on momentary, then set the highest output at MAX, then decide if I want strobe or two lower output levels.

I do not use any strobe in a "tactical" or "threat prevention" mindset...just use it as an attention getter to communicate with others.

If it's a Rotary that's pretty much exactly what I'm about to order. But...debating the sapphire crystal since the glass hase given me no troubles and I do not baby these things.

no worries N2, just kot back inside from patrolling the mountain all day...... settling into some Bombay and tonic right now, I'll post some pics for you tomorrow night, opened up the box and added a lanyard and some rubber tubeing so it fits my kit, I'll post some impressions after I've really used it......one thing off the bat it's got a weird notch/hole/grouve drilled in the rotary knob about 180deg from the stop notch, not quite sure if thats normal or somebody slipped while milling it, I'll try to post a pic later, not to sure if it even bugs me, its a tool not jewelry......function seems pretty good, and the sapphire does look clearer, I'll try to post side by sides with my 120HCRI in a day or so........funny how much I dig that HCRI tint,,,,,,almost don't want to carry the rotary.......NOT!

Sounds good. The hole you noticed is on all the Rotary models I'm aware of as is the silver(ish) stop screw. Most likely the hole is used to fasten, align and possibly even for a step in the machining for the rotary knob. May also be there to allow air to "escape" so rotary moves smoothly.

thx thats good news....I'm still posting a pic of it tomorrow...its actually kind of helpful as a 180 deg from the notch reference, which is a nice walking in the dark brightness, maybe a couple of tics brighter than I plan on using, but still a nice ref point..

I have both of those lights, but they are both modded. The TCR10 is a better built light, but is also a little bulkier. It has the right amount of threads and the head and body go on smooth. It does not tail stand. The UI is not my favorite. It uses a 6 setting variable ring only, no clicky. Mine is very bright, but has a more neutral tint. The blue/red light and strobe are a little gimmicky, but fun to play with.

The SWM V10R+ is a bit thinner and looks more mass produced. It does tailstand. Wish it had a few more threads on the head. I like this UI better. Infinite variable with a clicky. Mine no longer has momentary, because of a custom clicky. The low is candle light low and it's high is awesome. The beam is cooler in tint, and even brighter than the TCR.

Both clips are crap and gonna get the McGizmo clip installed eventually. I would highly recommend the SWM before the TCR10 for sure, but still think the TCR is a neat light.

Obligatory pic. 3 is SWM and 5 is TCR.

Meluck, you have some nice ti lights. For pure use/carry, do you have any issues with smooth ti for a light?

I prefer that it's not all smooth. I carry the McGizmo(6th in pic) most often. It's smooth, but machining grooves gives it just enough grip....more so than the new HDS lights. The Prometheus(last one) also looks smooth, but it's really not that smooth the machining keeps it grippy enough. The pocket rocket(next to last) is one if my favorite lights, but this sucker is slick and has some idiot marks from dropping it that don't show in pics. The SWM could definitely use some grippiness, I wish there was knurling on this one.

The small hole in the knob is normal as others have already stated. It allows a wire retainer for the rotary knob to be inserted into the knob allowing the knob to rotate without completely coming off the body of the light. It does not have anything to do with the machining process or as an air/vent hole.

Every time I see the Prometheus Alpha with the shorty body I want one. Anyone with that setup also have a lenslight mini that they could compare it to in terms of size, quality, brightness, throw, and anything else you can think of? I really like the looks of them and the crazy durability testing I saw. Plus, everything I've ever heard about the maker seems to indicate he's a great guy which is always a plus. I just can't decide if it would be a sizeable enough upgrade for me to justify it.

A hole doesn't allow air to enter/exit/vent??? Wow! That's unbelievable.

With all this talk on a very long post, I'm surprised no one has posted anything from Candlepower forums

meluck that picture is beyond cool with your XM. Looks like you have the demands of cutting and lighting well under control! Very, very nice with lots of drool. Thanks everyone for great information. I am really surprised that BF does not have a dedicated sub forum similar to the other forum just for torch talk. I dream of the day Rick wades into the flashlight world, maybe a collaboration with Henry.
