Flashlights

Every time I see the Prometheus Alpha with the shorty body I want one. Anyone with that setup also have a lenslight mini that they could compare it to in terms of size, quality, brightness, throw, and anything else you can think of? I really like the looks of them and the crazy durability testing I saw. Plus, everything I've ever heard about the maker seems to indicate he's a great guy which is always a plus. I just can't decide if it would be a sizeable enough upgrade for me to justify it.

I have both of these.
-Build quality: both are top notch, but Jason specs his out to ridiculous tolerances. His threads are best. LL's aren't to shabby though.
-Size: Alpha is big....real big even with the single cell short body. The LL feels big even though it's smaller than the Alpha.
-Brightness/Throw/Tint: The Alpha is brighter and has better throw, but I think that the LL is bright enough, and being able to adjust flood/throw is a plus. Low on both is just not quite low enough for me. The tint is very similar, both neutral with the LL just a bit warmer.
-Clips: totally different here. Alpha has a "conventional" Ti clip. LL has a Delerin(plastic) clip. I prefer the Alpha clip, the later is too stubby short for me.
-UI: Big fan of both UI's. Alpha 3 mode and LL 2 mode, both with memory, clicky, and momentary. I personally like it simple, but UI is the preference of the beholder.
-Durability: Both claim durability, but Alpha gets the win on this, it's just a monster of a light.
-Tail stand: LL doesn't and this is where it loses for me. Alpha does tail stand.
-Looks: I know who really cares right. I'm a big fan of Cu and patina, but something about the Alpha just looks awesome.
-So which one: I say ya gotta get them both...yeah, yeah, yeah, if just one I say go with Alpha.

So back on topic...

How's everyone liking their newly purchased lights so far?

HDS Rotary 250 arrived today. I'm already much happier with it than I was with the clicky.

With certain tools, especially ones I might need to use in a time sensitive situation, I like simple. For my purposes, I can leave the rotary dialed up to max and click on/off. The pre-programmed modes will suit my needs for now, until I feel like expending what seems like ever dwindling brain bytes on customizing it. That will most likely occur when I stop long enough to sit down with an adult beverage and just relax..

I would like to find a decent clip for it, until then I'll put a lanyard on it and use N2K's "pocket fishing" technique :)

Thanks meluck! That confirms my desire of the prometheus light. Ultimately great quality and tuly killer aesthetics are hard to ignore. I'm really happy with most of my edc so I have to look for nuanced ways to improve and this may be next.

NJ, wish I had known you were looking for one - I just sold mine and shipped it off yesterday.. FWIW, IMO I found the Prom Alpha (even in the shorty) too big. Very nice in all other aspects though. If it could be shrunk down to single -123 cell size while maintaining it's aesthetics, build, etc I'd be all over one.

It was pretty easy to come by, I just signed up on Jason's emailing list and jumped on one when he put out a batch this past Nov..

Happy fishin'

On a more serious note: I customize the UI on each of my HDS primarily because I must have the momentary feature turned on. Got spoiled by older Surefires in my youth w/ always momentary---unless you tightened the butt-cap--setup and just cannot acclimate to use a light without press-n-hold for light until release.

I admire you guys that use the UI option, I am more of a plug and play guy, KISS ( keep it simple stupid) don't want you folks thinking other things. However the HDS LE 170 clicky satisfies my needs with Presets with first click 85 push and hold for 170 , double for 15 then triple click for .3 lumens. The HDS Rotary addresses my desire for customization, I'm with you AZ, don't have enough cranial capacity to wade into uncharted waters.

Awesome AZ!! The rotary is pretty damn sweet!! I've been carrying mine since I got it :)

Yeah I have done a quick glance and read of the manual. Just haven't been to determined yet. So far I appreciate the factory setup

Right on guys.. With rotary dialing, the presets are not as important in many situations. However, once you use the light for awhile you may find that this feature or that setting would suit your needs better. Having the option of programming settings of the UI on the HDS is a nice feature.

Remove the cell (battery) for a bit, reinsert and click 20+ quick(ish) clicks...then press-n-hold...(I do this w/ rotary at max but don't know if it matters). The light's instruction manual then walks you through the steps to set up the light as you like.

I always suggest a relaxed (as possible) setting, budgeted time and a beverage on hand (of your choice) before starting...it's not uncommon to not get it just right on the first go.

Got mine yesterday and this thing is awesome! i take it with me when i walk the dog at night in the park.... along with something pointy!

Cool man! It's so exciting to get one!! They're sweet light for sure. Post some pics and some thoughts about it

Joe I am embarrased to admit this. I read this post and never realized that you had to hold for 170!!! Haha what a dunce I am! I thought that it was one click for 170 this whole time! I have been thinking the 85 single click was the high. Too funny. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I have used that thing everynight for months. Im glad I finally know how to use the thing now. :)

F.O. I was expecting you to say something like. " j81 apparently your not too bright!" Come on buddy. That would have been a perfect insult for a flashlight thread. Or maybe "not the brightest bulb in the box". Haha!

^ Nope. I need to learn to read instruction manuals. I can't wait to walk maya tonight so I can try it out. :)

So, wandering around with the HDS in the pocket with a lanyard.. It has the raised clicky button, which is apparently easy to inadvertently turn on based on the incredible amount of heat I just experienced :o

Happens w/ flush button too, often when seated or increasingly active. Check that the lanyard length allows for some control of how the light rests in the pocket. Also, decide what other item(s) (if any) to keep in the same pocket.

I use my light so frequently that I'm adjusting its position in my pocket often. Also, I check to assure it's still there...since the HDS are not grippy, I've had mine leave my pocket upon raising from a seated position...

Next best thing to try is a holster of some sort, but it may add bulk and may slow the presentation of the light when needed.

I experienced that often as well with bezel up lights. Yet another reason I like me EB1, the bezel disappears in my pocket and is much less likely to be turned on accidentally
