Flu outbreak....

we should all remember the important things: vitamin c, zinc, and echinacia to fight viral infections. anything you do helps and these can be good to be on preventively if you know it is in your area.

I prefer a steady diet of whiskey, bacon, and cheeseburgers with extra jalepenos. Oh, and some good ol' Texas BBQ. And some beer.* I have found that this combination makes me an unsuitable host for most diseases as they want a healthy specimen if possible.

Thank you,
and thank you!

Taking responsibility for oneself and one's own does not automatically require shoving everyone else overboard. :D

True enough Esav and until the moment to shove comes I am game. But I will shove no question no regrets.

While we all admire heroes and acts of selflessness in the service of others, realistically the best thing the average citizen can do is try to avoid getting infected or transmitting the illness, and trying to stay as self sufficient as possible, lessening the burden on those caring for the ill.

dougo83, most of your advice is anecdotal and cannot be medically verified, but the jalapenos will probably burn them viruses down like the Tabasco and garlic we use around here.

It almost looks like you took my "advice" seriously :D

I go above and beyond, put myself at risk regularly and owe nobody as my cosmic karma is well in balance. I have given well more than I have taken.

SAR missions and keeping your kids breathing is my job and passion and I am happy to do it but make no mistake my kids and life come first my friend. The rest I let natural selection take care of. Memories are short when nearly the entire system bailed in New Orleans and it will happen again. It has nothing to do with courage but rather priorities.
If you think your health care system is not human you are sorrily mistaken and are in for a rude of wakening when/if the time comes.

Sleep well.

Why wouldn't you prepare your family to get along without you? Sounds like poor planning.

I cannot tell how much the flight of many health care workers exacerbated problems in NO and surrounding areas.

Not simply the flight, but their complete lack of honor...I thank God everyday for the fact that my folks raised me to stand behind my word, regardless of what may happen to me...

Why do I feel that this thread is destined for W&C?... didn't have to go like this.... lots of good posts. I've learned alot so far. I for one would like to see it stay in W&SS.

I've heard (mostly WOM) so many negatives about the flu vacines.... Not being effective, actually making maters worse... some of it sounded (conspiracy-esque) but others made sense. (Like the vaccines are only effective on the previous year's strains.)

Can anyone "in the know" expand on this?

Well, its not just that. If you want to talk about honor and responsibility, then I can see how your family comes first. I dealt directly with this during Katrina. It wasn't such a big deal during Gustav. People have responsibilities to their families. Being away from them becomes more of a problem when you may not be able to get back to them due to fuel and road conditions, and you cannot communicate with them due to complete technical failure.

Fine. You created that situation for yourself and you have to handle it the best way you can. But you damn sure can't denigrate that kind of action and then talk about being prepared in the same breath. You should have gotten them the hell out of there in the first place or they should be able to make do without you.

I dealt with it too. I am from north Houston and went down to the coast to help evac people. I also went with some friends to help those who needed it after the storm was gone. I could not believe the sheer number of people too stupid to heed the many galring warnings to get the F out. It wasn't like the danger of the storms was kept a secret.

I certainly agree with you. My family comes first in this situation, but I look at it differently. I am 25 and have no kids or anything. My folks are both able-bodied and could easily evac the rest of the family or at least provide enough help that I could be left to utilize my training for those less fortunate. If I had kids and such or my folks were old and gray, it would probably be alittle different.

Also, there are plenty of examples of the dishonorable nature of the NOLA natives that I am referencing, but those examples are neither here nor there and I certainly don't want ot mention them to avoid: A.insulting the good people of the city or B. de-railing the thread completely...

You know, that played a big part in it. However, the extent and manner of damage went beyond all expectation. The eye of the hurricane came up the damn river. No one expected to see interstate signs snapped in half 200 miles into Mississippi. No one expected a complete communication blackout. Hell, we were actually down to couriers for days, and they could only follow certain paths that had been cleared. 2005 - - couriers.

There you go. Depends on what kind of preparation the situation calls for.

Actually our medical preparation for a pandemic is rather thin.

The hospitals will be a capacity instantly and you will be pretty much on your own.

Available vaccines will be used on our leaders, health care professionals, public safety personnel, etc. - not the general public.

If the bird flu pandemic happens, it will be grim.

Perhaps, but the U.S. is in a lot better shape than it was just four years ago.

Because of fears of the H5N1 avian flu, both New York City and the United States have had detailed pandemic emergency plans in place since 2005, as well as stockpiles of emergency supplies and flu drugs (the plan can be read at www.pandemicflu.gov).

Dr. Frieden said that for such an emergency, the city had extra hospital ventilators, huge reserves of masks and gloves and “millions of doses of Tamiflu,” an antiflu drug that thus far appears to work against the new swine strain.

Another point worth consideration before one heads into the woods for an extended stay, crying that the sky is falling...

All of the U.S. patients have recovered or are expected to. Two of the border cases were in Texas, near San Antonio, and seven of the cases were in southern California, the CDC said.

I'm not trying to say this thing isn't worthy of some scrutiny. If you or yours have symptoms, seek medical attention.

However, it's not time to freak out just yet. Tomorrow, I'll let you all know when you can freak out. :p

Flus commonly start in Asia. The medical minds try to guess which ones will spread around the world and form that years recipe for the vaccine. Then it is "cooked up", often in eggs or some other useful medium.

If they guessed well, anyone who got the vaccine will have more immunity or resistance than the non-immunized. Even if they guessed well, and a person got the vaccine they may be exposed to strain that isn't in the vaccine. (either they guessed wrong, or it mutated, or just another strain grew unexpectedly)

Folks who get the vaccine, can suffer flu like symptoms (i.e. feel sick, malaise, chills, a bit of fever), but not accutally have the flu. Rather it is the body's response and build of antigens to the viruses in the vaccine.

Sometimes the vaccine batch fails and a shortage occurs as only a few companies world wide "cook up" a batch of vaccine.

It is worthwhile if you are at risk, such as elderly or diabetic or are in healthcare to get the vaccine as it helps lower the overall risk, which is what medicine is all about, raising or lowering percentages.

I doubt this year's flu vaccine has any or much immunity to the strain in question.

Rather it is the body's response and build of antigens to the viruses in the vaccine.
Good explanation, however I think you meant antibodies rather than antigens. The body produces antibodies as a response to the antigens of the virus.
