French regional knives...

B burkefj A repository of dreams, many thanks indeed for sharing some wonderful examples. The different Bee/Fly types interested me- I've often thought a Pineapple could be an interesting variant but not seen it ;)

The couteaux du roi particularly impressed, such ancient examples-possibly about the time of the Revolution and what elegance. Are those bolsters gold? They look like red gold to my eye at least.

Regards, Will

Thanks Will, yes they are gold, or at least gold over iron/steel, with gold pins in the handles, there is one little place on one bolster where I see something that makes me think maybe the bolsters are gold wrapped or layered(not plated) but I'm not sure. One knife has a small spine lock, the lock does not work any more, I think the piece that goes into the blade notch is sheared off, but it still pivots up when you press it, they came with the lower half of a green case wrapped in ray skin(called galuchat), with hinge, just missing the top, I think typically they would have been with another as a pair with a silver or gold blade for cutting fruit to avoid tarnish on the blade, and the steel blade was for harder items. They have nice decoration on the spine and the spring is tapered toward the rear(pinched) so that the blade fits perfectly when closed. I tried looking up the blade maker marks but no luck.

Not to be annoying, but I just got a chance to finally photograph this little jewel I found at Maison Berthier in Thiers...a Munoz(MOF) full handle, damascas, mammoth ivory crust with very delicate engraving on the spine and bee design, it's just lovely and perfectly fitted. He just retired in July I believe, but worked for Forge De Laguiole for a long time...These sort of knives have become sort of a sickness for me:)

Amazing bit of sculpture, burkefj!!

I’m a rank amateur when it comes to French Traditional knives, but slowly I learn. I decided that my next would be a Capuchadou. One caught my eye, and I wanted it but it was out of my league. There was a Black Friday deal that I couldn’t resist. It’s 10CM. Fits my hand perfectly. Silky smooth upon opening or closing. Very Happy.
