You're holding the bow wrong. You need to rotate your arm so that he inside of your elbow is parallel with the string, then it won't rub as much, or not at all. I say this, knowing how it works, but still do it wrong myself, and have ripped slabs of meat from my arm by not paying attention. I wear an arm guard.

Ripping slabs of meat off sounds painful!! I too will wear a guard as soon as i get one. Im pretty sure im holding it with my elbow inside parallel to the string. I followed some videos and stuff on how to hold and shoot it. Still out of the 30 shots i did get 1 string slap. I prolly got relaxed and a little careless towards the end and that could have helped cause it.

So, I have two WICKED slicers... A Magua from TMHunt (dur!) and a Mountain Man 100% from Daizee... I've been neglecting them lately, not on purpose just I haven't been doing much of anything with my blades besides routine usage. So this morning I was feeling rather randy, I decided since I SUCK donkey balls at sharpening a convex I'm going to do what I know. So I took the MM100 to a 17° each side on my KME. Started with the medium fine stone, then the fine stone, then stropped it on black then on green... HOLY FLIPPIN HELL! This thing will slice atoms from 100 yards! Now to work on the Magua.

I... I don't know what to say.... TMI, methinks... TMI

Being of German, Polish an Scots heritage (with smatterings of other northerly climes) makes me suited to colder temps. Guys at work kid about me wearing shorts pretty much all the time from March to December. If it's above freezing, I'm almost always in shorts - my legs hardly ever get cold. I sweat like a fountain in anything over 70° if I'm moving around. Where I was chopping wood this summer there's a circle of dead grass from all the sweat that poured out where I was standing and swinging the maul. I just abhor (WOTD!) that I sweat so much, but ain't nothing I can do. I still dig summer, but that's because I can sweat out beer faster than I can drink it. Fall, especially, and winter are my favorite seasons, too. Still remember this hike up Mt. Lafayette I did with a friend, in February - 15° at the start. 15 min. later I was stripped down to an undershirt and a t-neck, sweating. My buddy was shaking his head, laughing. Had to put another layer on once we got above treeline, and some more (dry) layers on when we were going back down, though. Less aerobic work and I'm not that inured to the cold. Gawd I hate sweating....

Nice use of the word!!

I like temps from 65-75. under 40 i dont like at all. over 85 i dont care for either unless im in the water swimming.... then heck i dont care if it gets 100 on those days

WW - Back when I was still able to pull back on a bow (torn cartilage sucks), I started using a standard type arm guard. Occasionally, I would not rotate my elbow enough and catch the back end of the guard. I started experimenting and ended up using a combo of half a checkbook cover held in place by one of those elastic type elbow braces. The result was thin enough that the string wouldn't catch often and when it did, the drag would not affect the arrow flight as much.

The key to tighter groups is practice, practice and more practice. I used to shoot an average of 300 arrows a day 7 days a week and went to 1 or 2 competition shoots (outdoors and indoors) every week. That was 5 arrow rounds at 20 to 50 yards. My groups were 1.5 inches or less at 30 or less and 3 inches out to 60. That' s not to brag but to show what consistent practice can produce. When I first started shooting, my groups were about 10 inches at 20 yards, good enough for a deer kill zone, but not competition shooting, so I just shot a lot and got better.

The thing about going to a range is that most of the people there will readily help you improve. They can watch what you are doing and fix issues in minutes that would take you hours to figure out on your own. And if you think the snark is bad here, wait'll you get around a bunch of arrowheads.. It can get "bad". :D

Thanks ZZ for the info, ill be going to a range soon!! Sounds like you use to be into it big time! sucks about the torn cartilage

WW - Yeah I kinda lived and breathed archery for a few years. The key to excellence in archery is constant, CONSISTENT practice. When I was transferred to RI for a Navy school for 6 months, I tried to shoot every competition available.

One of the strange things I encountered was what I call "The Yankee Distance Factor." One day at the Tiverton Gun Club range, some of the locals were trying to decide if they were gonna go to the Sat or Sun shoot. One was 6 miles and the other 8 miles away. I said I was going to both. I also pointed out they had multiple options every Sat and Sun because of the short distances. Texas Field Archery Association has a rule that 2 clubs can't have a shoot the same day if they are within 150 miles of each other. I would 2 shoots a weekend and put close to 500 miles or more every weekend and they were complaining about 2 miles. There was wondering why I blew'm outta the water for the 6 months I was there. :D

They key is not to be in the hot weather in the first place. Or to be submersed, preferably naked, in my pool. With an ice cold beer in my hand.

Super nice job on WW's sheath, BTW. Outstanding.

they have pools in New Hampshire? I thought that was just a California thing... LOL
thanks on the compliments, couldn't of done it with out WW sending me his choppy

ZZ, yes the one who puts the most effort into something is normally the one who comes out the most ahead. Sounds like you did just that.

And 710, i cant even put that sheath away, normally i keep my knives locked in a display case or big storage bin, and the sheaths in another storage box, but that sheath i cant seem to put away. I put it in the storage box, less than an hour later i had it right back out admiring it. now its in a display case too, the only sheath to ever be stored in the case on display. Truly fantastic work! Thanks again bro!

Hey where's Cbear been?...............Is he out suckin donkey balls again? Jeez! :D

It is usually in the high 90's / low 100's from May to September here.. couple that with 90% humidity and it is swampy to say the least.. I know how you feel 710, some days the sweat just doesn't stop.. It is 80+ today in the middle of fricking november... I got a sunburn yesterday at a birthday party, felt like July..

WW, don't worry about the arm guard..about the third time you really mess it up you will start moving your arm right and stop hitting it.. used to shoot 80-100 arrows a day for years and never hit my arm after the first couple good ones..

LMAO, i dont want to mess up 3 times bad to get to that point.

And then ill always be worried ill slap my arm and be thinking about that instead of proper form.

You guys crack me up, the majority of you are saying dont do it the safe way. Next you will be telling me to lay a sharpening stone on my chest and sharpen knives towards my neck LMAO

It's like a pair of training wheels.. take them off, fall over a couple times.. skin your knee.. then you ride like a champ at the bike rodeo :D

WW - I forgot to add, when the time comes for you to turn that Native5 loose, let me know... I'll trade you a badass duct tape arm guard for it :D

but seriously, let me know ;)

Weather is kinda weird here right now. It'll get dang near freezing at night or sometimes even frost but once the sun comes up it warms up real quick into the 60's. I was driving around in a t shirt with my window down today.

Will do, i dont know what ill ever do without a duct tape arm guard LMAO, but seriously ill let you know first if/when that happens.

First id need to get myself a manix 2 XL, i think that might be the only one to bump this out my pocket. bigger, but cheaper a bit, still a great steel too s30v VS the S35vn on the native5. But i like a bigger folder and that one looks like a beast.

Cool, thanks man :) I like smaller and lighter for a folder.. to a point. I have a little traditional that realistically would do 99% of what I do with a knife on a daily basis, but it just too small. The Native or the Ritter mini grip are about perfect imo.

Google "duct tape prom dress".. you could make a great arm guard out of duct tape and super cheap too ;)

Well i think Granite is hooking me up with a guard so ill save the duct tape for later :D

But they do indeed have so wild looking duct tape dresses and tuxs, never seen anything like them.

Of course we do. All the cold-blooded folks (most everyone) who live here can't stand the heat either, so we have to have pools to regulate our temperature. Not everyone has a swimming hole nearby, and though I live on the coast, the ocean is too damn cold to loll about in, even in the summer...although the rivers and bays are quite nice; this is literally my backyard, a tidal estuary. Unfortunately, it's only paddle-able for a few hours a day before and after high tide:

One of the many swimming holes in the White Mountains, w/ a little Becker content:

That's why moose live here, too; they spend most of their summer wading around:

And even though Lynne Cox was born in Boston, she was raised swimming in New Hampshire. Talk about cold tolerance....
