Ganzo G720-B first impressions

As long as people want to argue about this I'm game. I'll give up when everyone else does. If people don't like my opinion and don't want to hear it they can ignore me. Otherwise if you want to sign the praises of your counterfeit knife be prepared to my opinion on it.

Just because counterfeit knives are here to stay doesn't mean the hobby should lay down and take it. How in the hell does that make a bit of sense....

Make no mistake, I welcome your comments. I have learned much from people such as yourself. My complaint is this, when we attack one group because of their actions and completely ignore others for the same thing. This is what I see many forum members doing when it comes to Chinese produced blades. Not the blades from the US, England, Germany or South Africa. Only China. The merits of one's arguement are greatly deminished because it is so tightly focused, ignoring the actions and choices of other companies and countries as if they are sacred cows. It gets kinda old, real fast.

Please do not think that I am coming to the defense of the Chinese. I am not a fan of China. Personally, I would love to support jobs in the US by buying only American made products from US owned companies. In this day and age, that is difficult, it not impossible to do. Let's be realistic, China's imports are here to stay.

Secondly, when it comes to countereit knives, you feel that our hobby should not "lay down and take it." Whatever that means, I can only guess. I must assume that your goal is to educate your fellow BF members so that we may avoid products with poor blade steel. What else could it be?

If that is your goal, thank you. I can see an uphill fight for you until members are all in agreement on terms like copy, clone, knockoff, theft and steal, just to name a few.

Morals and politics aside, the design of the Ganzo G720 appears to be a well thought out knife. In my mind, the G10 scales are a better choice than LionSteel's metal grip. Use of the Axis lock is a plus in my book. I try to buy a knife during tax time. Maybe I should order a G720 just to see what all the fuss is about.

I have been through this before. There are certainly American companies I won't support for various reasons some of which is IP theft. The fact is though the vast majority of this stuff comes out of Chinese factories. And in fact this thread is about a Chinese produced knock off, a very new one at that.

If people get tired of hearing me talk about this then they don't have to listen or respond. That is what I do when I get tired of certain people. No need to keep arguing if you don't want.

That said, new people come along and read this stuff all the time. They should know what they are getting into and that if you truly like and respect this hobby, you want get involved with counterfeits. Again, if people don't like me standing up and speaking out, put me on ignore. Problem solved for you.

I could ignore. This is true. But so could you. Especially after you made your point numerous times in the same thread. The difference is these subjects interest me and it gets very tedious trying to filter through what is on topic and what isnt. There are plenty of thread where even you point to staying on topic.

Craytab,

I would love to hear about the American companies that you won't support and why. This is not the place to do that though. Maybe some other time or thread. I do have to ask about one of your comments though.

"They should know what they are getting into and that if you truly like and respect this hobby, you want get involved with counterfeits."

What? I don't get it. You lost me with that one. As for the G720 being counterfeit, What would it be a counterfeit of? The Lion Steel? Nope. Close but no cigar. Certainly not a Benchmade. A countereit is defined as something made in exact imitation of something valuable or important with the intention to deceive or defraud. Look it up. The Ganzo G720 certainly does not fall into that class.

Reading your comments always makes me think. I do feel however that you are trying to break down a brick wall by banging your head against it. If that is what you live for, have at it. Your head will bleed long before there is crack in the wall, much less getting the wall to crumble. Surely there is a better way to educate others about problems in our hobby.

I cant speak for Craytab but the way I read it was the "involved in counterfeits" comment was either a typo and he meant to say "dont get involved" with counterfeits. The other possibility if he did not infact create a typo would be if he was simply stating that people should be proactive and get involved in the counterfeit discussion. While he and I dont agree on this topic I think we both agree that nothing about counterfeiting is going to solve itself and people at least have to talk about these things if a solution is every to present itself. For too long those apposed to these knives have taken an turning a blind eye and a deaf ear approach to them and its result is what we see today which are incredibly accurate replicas. As for the question of just what is it a counterfeit of? The styling is almost identical to a lionsteel. However that really isnt an enforceable infringement and so it comes down to the lock. The lock is a direct rip off of the benchmade axis lock of which benchmade holds the patent. Still there are three sides to every story. What benchmade says, what ganzo says and then what really happened. Neither of those players has made a statement on this so we only have guesses. But I do remember in the not so distant past where a supposed custom maker accused a chinese company of many wrongs only to discover it was that maker who was screwing up. Things arent always what they seem. And I dont go fighting wars that I dont even know if there is a legitimate reason to fire.

Some new folks come along and don't understand the implications of counterfeits or clones or what ever we want to call them. Some people might not even know they are getting into the counterfeit market. That is why I consistently restate my opinion and the opinion of bladeforums. See this post on a recently closed thread in General:

If you love this website and/or love this hobby you won't support counterfeits.

So you repeat yourself multiple times in the same thread because you are worried about new comers? So you are worried they may miss the first 3 times you say the same thing in a single thread? Ok, either way that thread was closed. Why even bring that into this? I mean it was shut down for a reason right? if discussion was wished to be continued they probably wouldnt have locked it. That knife wasnt even a clone of anything anyways. It has obvious style similarities to various brands but the knife is not a clone of anything. Yes I know the pivot is very much like the pivot on a couple microtech models but that doesnt qualify it as a clone. That thread was shut down for it being absolutely devoid of any useful information and was nothing but a bunch of whining and none of it was even based on fact. Sure someone made an assumption that it was a clone simply because of where it was being sold but that website everyone loves to hate was actually the first site to sell Reate Knives, Stedemon and real steel knives before they had a presence here in the states. This is why I get so irritated with this subject. So much misinformation and too many assumptions. Threads are being shut down and people pull out the pitchforks before they even know what is being discussed. Since when is it guilty until proven innocent?

Sigh...again...how is that knife any different than the ESEE clones on auction sites? Answer...it isn't.

I all ready answered your question. A whole paragraph. Go back and find it. But if you are asking how the knife in the thread craytab linked is any different than the esee clones then id say you have a couple crossed wires if you even have to ask. The knife in that other hread is NOT a clone of anything. So how is it different? (Read this very slowly as to not miss anything). The esee clones are clones or counterfeit depending on the logos. The knife in that other thread is an original design with obvious influences. Every knife made has influences. That is not the same as ripping someone off. If you think that a knife is automatically a rip off because the pivot is the same as another knife then you pretty much think everything is a counterfeit.

In what world is that not a copy? Suddenly because they rip off two companies by adding a lock from Benchmade and putting the Ganzo name on it? No, it's a copy.

Outside of putting Ganzo on it and the Benchmade lock there is no difference between what they did and the ESEE copies that come without a name on them. Ripping off two companies at once doesn't change that. People can buy them, but there isn't a difference.

That is NOT the knife we are talking about anymore. I told you I answered your question about the ganzo on a previous page. Dont agree? You are entitled to your opinion. Still Craytab put a link to another thread with a different knife and that is what the conversation shifted to. If you were actually reading the posts instead of skimming for things to disagree with you would know that. Either way those ganzo knives look like a lionsteel. That is it. The construction is different, the materials are different. And lionsteels dont have that lock. Bottom line its not a counterfeit. It has no identifying marks. And there is no one model that the ganzo would ever be confused with if the person buying the knife was an educated individual. If someone looks at that ganzo and mistakenly buys it thinking it was a lionsteel they are an idiot. So this is the second time I have addressed your question. If you remain on repeat Im simply not going to reply because we are now down to simple matters of opinion which is ridiculous to argue about.
