GEC 25s - Gots 'em?

Why would anyone pay so much for a northwoods little bay when they do not look nearly as good as these northfields and tidioutes?

Apologies if it is not alright t to ask, but, what did the Little Bays go for, I missed them altogether. I got home late from work , 5:20 est, and they were all gone. I didn't even get to see the pictures. I got my hands on one pioneer bone and I am happy, wow all of these went so fast. I must say I think, from what I have seen that the Tidioute's were the nicest, really like the bolsters.

Perception. That's all I can think of. I had a Mammoth Hawthorne from waaaay back when you could just browse online and actually pick the one you wanted. After looking at it objectively for a while, I sent it back...I couldn't live with all the gaps on a GEC made knife.

I reserved a Pioneer Bone and I think they look fantastic. As close to Soup Bone as you can get without it being the real deal.

I believe you made a wise decision to keep your powder dry for the rendezvous Ryan. I sure hope to go to it one year. Did you get any of the 25's? I have a pioneer bone and unicorn on the way. I guess I just do not get the northwoods. The style just does not look right to me, and the extra cost just seems like a cash grab. But to each his own.

I think they look "as good" but not so good that I'd pay the extra price. I do like the blade on the Northwoods though.

I had a denim in my cart, but let it go because I want the money for the rendezvous. I want a denim micarta knife of some sort someday, but this is was not that day.

The prices looked good for Northwoods until you do the math on the $75 #25's...

I was on at 5 PM on the dot. Saw 93 red micartas up for grabs. Hesitated because tomorrow I and a friend are starting the drive down for the Rendezvous. Not sure what will be there but I decided to preserve my cash for a souvenir of the journey.

I hope my wager pays off.

The Lil' Bay has a cover that I didn't have, denim, and also a clip blade...both made it very worthwhile for me to get. Search for a clip #25 from previous years and it becomes clear...

As of right now, no 25s. But with 3 Northwoods, a Snakewood 25, and the 2 I've got on early reserve, I think I should be set.

i just caught a glance before they apparently sold out, but the northwoods little bays seemed to be in the $160 to $170 range. And they were not expensive materials, just camel bone and micarta! I could have got one, but would never pay that kind of price gouging. I even think the logo and lettering looks amateurish. It is all hype.

How sour are those grapes?

Spoken like someone that has never been in business for themself. I would suggest that you produce them and undercut KSF, you'll be set for life.

Touché, but I am only sour about the price. This is a fun hobby, but, if they take advantage of us, they will end up running people away. I should not have commented on the aesthetics of a northwoods knife. That is simply a point of preference. It just irritated me to see the same basic product doubled in cost for no reason other than a cash grab.

You are right joeradza, I am not a businessman. KSF can charge whatever they want, but we do not have to pay. They should have waited for the Tidioutes to sell out before putting the northwoods on sale for twice the price. Buy all you want.

You definitely have the wrong impression of my buying habits. It's just that I cringe when I hear people criticize prices without knowing what it takes to bring a product to market.

I truthfully don't know how I have been so lucky. I've never been able to get online when all these elusive models drop. I landed this fella, a BF TC and a Northwoods Lil Bay in black Micarta. My bank account is hurting but man, it's hard turning down such a rare opportunity.

Giraffe bone is kinda expensive.

I think Northwoods is genius, personally. Their product made me pay attention to "inferior" slip joints instead of the high tech modern folders. I think the styling and marketing is a great way to bridge the gap between modern and traditional knife nuts.

I also never have bought them, because I researched them and found out about GEC instead. At first, I just couldn't justify the price difference. Then, my tastes changed to prefer the traditional aesthetics of GEC's.

I also suspect that the Northwoods knives are more expensive to make for several reasons. If you think about it, they have custom bolsters, a special stamp, their own blade shape, and special handle covers that are fewer in production number (per handle material) than GEC states as their minimum. KSF certainly pays more for their Northwoods SFO's than the average vendor pays for a special cover material or shield.

It's probably not as gougy as it seems at first bluff.

That last sentence is the key, for me. I don't have a Northwoods knife, but it's not because of price.

I ordered a mammoth ivory something or other and realized, after it arrived, that I had picked the wrong one. I was able to send it back with no penalty. Easy peasy.

KSF knows what it's doing.
