GEC #35 Churchill Thread

Thanks! I told myself "just one" but I'm already saving for the next.

Glad to read about your enthusiasm. It was fun to tag along as you debated over what to get. I think you made a really good choice and hopefully I can confirm that when my first #35 Churchill gets here tomorrow.

Anyway, congratulations! Nice looking knife!

Thanks! I'm quite happy with this one, I don't have others to compare it to but this is a really well made knife. It reminds me of the knives the older folks carried when I was a kid, and that's something I couldn't find with other makers. Can't wait for my next one!

My first GEC!

The blade centering on this pattern is phenomenal. It looks like the blades should be touching each other and the liners but somehow there is a nearly imperceptible clearance. I'm glad to see that this companies products live up to the hype!

Mine had the exact same weakness upon closing with the main blade. I put dish detergent into the pivot and worked it about 30 times then flushed with hot water. Its much better now and has a nice snap.
Congrats to you Sir on your very first GEC .

You picked a great knife from a great company for your first traditional! I held out for a Yellow Rose (hopefully I'll have by Saturday), but if I can't bear to carry it, I'm going to get a cougar clawed one someday. This might just be the perfect EDC.

Its my first GEC but not my first traditional. Definitely the nicest I've had in my possession so far though!
I'm debating whether to make this a user or not. I'm not a collector, but this one makes it tempting to start. But, it would make a great edc.

Well for what it’s worth, you picked a good time to jump in. The Churchill is my favorite release in some time, the 66’s are still hangin’ around, the 48’s are great and still in stock, and the 81’s are a sought-after frame that isn’t made very often.

Definitely agree! A lot of folks love the 78s too (I'm in for one only, unless they surprise us with a single clip blade version).

The downside is it would seem they've given up on stainless. The Churchill would have been perfect with an acorn shield and elk handles.

TV, this is not unheard of with GEC or any maker of new traditional folding knives. In the process of manufacture and machining debris and small metal shavings or chips can get lodged in the pivot area of the blade. This happened recently to me on the Northwoods Lincoln Jack I got. The single blade clip point would not close at all without being pushed closed. Solution? It needs to be cleaned out. Use a mild detergent or other cleaning solution and brush and wash out that pivot area. I use Dawn detergent and a old tooth brush and then irrigate and flood the pivot with warm water and then shoot out with compressed air. Then oil the joint with your favorite oil I use Quick Release and then work the blade back forth a hundred times or so and see if that improves the snap closed. BTW my Lincoln Jack closes with a nice snap now after this cleaning process. This has happened on several new GEC folders I have got over the last few years. You may see small pieces of brass or other metal come out during this process and then means it is working:thumbsup: Good Luck!

WD 40 in the spraycan works beautifully.

I haven’t handled a 78, but it seems like a round bolstered 77, and the 77 is fantastic. It’s bound to impress.

Back to the Churchill, yeah it would’ve been a great pattern for the acorn. You’re right to not hold your breath for stainless, Bill gave me and @L.H.S the rundown on why they don’t do much stainless when we were at the Rendezvous. You might have to wait for a change of heart.

I just noticed the spring inside the Churchill is scalloped (if that's even the term) and not flat as on most knives. Is this functional and is it found on other patterns? Either way, it looks interesting.

Yeah, that’s on all of the ones I’ve had. It allows GEC to control the spring tension.

I got my Cougar Clawed late Monday afternoon and sharpened it Tuesday morning. It's a great user, to good to be a safe queen.

Many of us would like to have more patterns made in SS. The few that GEC has made were great, they do 440C well.
Sometimes to get a company to offer what you want you have to stop buying what they offer. As a consumer that is your only option.
If everyone did not go into "Feeding Frenzy" every time a new release came out in good old 1095 maybe we would see more SS offered
and in the patterns we want, not what they feel like producing. Just my opinion, not looking to start a "Range War'.

I agree. To erase any reservations I had I went ahead and cut some onions and jalapeños for guacamole, just to start a little patina. Now she's in my pocket ready for work

I just ordered my third. My first was the Oak 15 Beer Scout Knife, more recently the Brazilian Cherry 54 Beaver Tail and just a moment ago, the 35 Yellow Rose. I seem to be attracted to the unique shields. I mean who doesn't want a beaver or a rose on their knife or BEER!

I almost went with Ebony for the 35, it looks so nice. A very old fashion traditional look. And I really like the way the blades fit together on a single spring.

The problem I have with that is I prefer carbon, but would buy the odd stainless knife. I don’t think a boycott is in the future for me.

A boycott is totally impractical, unreasonable, plus no reason to believe it would have any influence. Sort of liking refusing to buy a Ford Mustang and hoping they'll build a Corvette.
