GEC #35 Churchill Thread

I hope this isn't off topic. Does anyone know if the small or large GEC pocket sheath is a better fit for the Calf Pen?

Earlier on people were talking about the cant of the blades. I 'd say they open out very straight and smartly, you also have to take into account that the backspring is not entirely flat, slight hump in the middle so this makes the canting even more impressive.

A fine versatile pattern that is broad in the handle yet not lumpish or heavy, I'd say it's a must have GEC knife.

i cant wait to get this in hand. ive held and had several 54s before and had hoped there was a smaller equal ends pattern from gec. i was deliberating because of the placement of the blades. this knife also does not really allow for a blade mod as the blade's appearance loses out compared to the 54 moose which ive owned as a single blade mod, but it was just too hefty of a knife. i tend to like my gecs on the smaller side. i was also concerned about how that secondary blade would sit but seeing the modding done looks like it can be adjusted quite comfortably. plus this is an edc or a second so ill have less compunction tossing it in the pocket. :D

I tried jamming my Calf Pen in a "large" and it was a pretty tight fit.

Too snug for my liking, in fact. I tried a slip for my CP, so I wouldn't get poked by the razor blade "tip", but then the screwdriver wasn't as accessible as I wanted it to be. Still trying to love the Calf Pen...

Used my ebony Churchill yesterday on a little walking stick I'm making. :)

Those 'cull' stags look like they've been pocketed for several years of daily carry. Very nice.

Thank you, olywa. Here is a more recent picture of mine, showing the more even patina and more polished stag with more use.

Received this today. Was fortunate to find one on a dealer site this week. I'm really pleased with the covers. It's not perfect if you look closely, but I have no problem with that. This knife seems like the perfect balance between being super nice and being something that begs to be used. It'll join my Drover and Calf Pen as keepers. I'll post a family photo at some point!

My Churchill after six months of fairly consistent carry:

Yours is aging very well.

I've carried my Rust Red Churchill almost exclusively since I received it in late October. Maybe 15 or 20 days during that time when it wasn't in my pocket. At the rate I'm going, mine should look like yours in about 20 years if I'm still around.

Here's some snapshots of mine taken just minutes ago. After nearly 6 months of carry with occasional usage on dry goods only. Maybe there's a patina in my future in a few decades. :D

Mine rides in pocket with keys, possibly accelerating its wear by a number of years . Plenty of food use also :D

I wouldn't have expected for the color to lighten as much as it has. Even some of the grooves have worn away.

just got in from @knifeswapper, Mike calls it a S or an edc model, and itll go just right in the pocket! after some modifications of course. Here it is next to a ring I made some time back.

having taken the time to hold and fondle the knife, opening the blades and examining in hand feel, i foresee myself doing that kick mod before it goes in the pocket.

I just got mine too, it's the maroon Micarta. I like it a ton, more than I thought I would. The fit and finish is supreme. It'd be nice if the clip blade had more spring tension tho as mine is barely satisfactory. Anyone who have multiples of these notice that the main blade has a bit of a weak snap to it?

That was the most common complaint when the Churchills started hitting mailboxes. It may have been the only complaint.

I bought five Churchills and the Clip blade on all but my Ebony has somewhat weak closing snap. I didn't like it at first but I consider it satisfactory. The ease of opening and the smooth blade action help make up for it. I've gotten used to it and I don't consider it a problem anymore. Besides, it's not that bad in the first place. Just a little on the weak side.

That was my experience but I haven't bought a Maroon Micarta variant...............yet.

You guys convinced me to dip my toes back into this pattern. I had a Harness Jack which I sold, a Banana bone which I sold, and an AAPK which is a safe queen. None of them have made me super excited by this pattern, but I am willing to try again with an ebony to see if it has more appeal when deployed as a user, than as a shelf ornament. I am hoping that the ‘disappear in the pocket’ factor, together with the cleaner lines of the ebony, may sway my judgment. I will let you know in a few weeks.

Its definitely on the weak side but it has just enough snap for it to not be irritating to the point that I don't like the knife. I bought a 56 few months back and loved everything about it but I had to push it all the way home when I closed it and it ended up making me hate the knife. Anyway, the Churchill is awesome, love it, fondled be it all day at my press at work. The color of the Micarta is just classy, and it has the smoothest transitions of possibly any gec I've owned. The hafting is beautiful, the fittment of the blades is perfection, nice symmetry on the grinds and swedging. if they'd had the spring tension dialed in better on the clip it seriously would've been a 10 of 10 specimen. Honestly that's been my biggest complaint on my last few gec's is the spring tension, they need to tighten em up. I know it's hard to please everybody all the time, but there isn't anybody who likes a soggy backspring.

I flushed mine when new with mineral oil and it improved slightly (weak 5 to strong 5) but it's also a 100 x smoother :)

The #35 is a great pattern for use/carry :D
