GEC #47 Viper

Never having the pleasure of owning a Viper in the past, I got one of the good snakewoods, it was beautiful but I could not pinch it open with the swedge and polished blade so I sold it.
I got lucky and scored an "S" version so I decided to make it "pinchable" by satin finishing the blade, I can now pinch it open easily and I really like the way it turned out, I satin finished the bolsters to match.

All this hubub about the Snakewoods and so little love for the smooth oiled bone...

The Oiled Bone is fantastic !! The only reason I don't have one is my empty wallet.

The class of 2016 as it stands so far! :)

A fine lineup. "So far" .... are you hinting ??
What about your 2014 Lineup ? We would enjoy that class also.

This caught my eye and I have to say that my hat is off to GEC for even attempting snake wood at a production level.
My first attempts at using it for folder scales had me rewriting my 'how to' books.
Snake wood redefines finese at minimum. It takes twice the time/effort in my experience than other exotics hardwoods.

I had several hours into my last set of scales that I attempted with it. I had them glued, pinned and ready for final shaping. Set them aside and two days later had cracks in both scales.
To say the least that was that.
My hat is off to GEC.
For those that have Vipers in snakewood that aren't cracked do be extra careful with them.

I'm going to carry mine :) maybe sink it in a cup of vinegar to patina it and probably satin the blade lol. Mine it's one of the good ones.

The satin looks very nice. Do you mind if I ask what you used to get the satin effect?
Thanks,
Rick

I used dark red (medium) scotch brite pad backed by a popsicle stick for the blade, takes about 20 minutes per side.
I used the grey (fine) scotch brite for the bolsters.

I may have gotten the ugliest stag Viper made. I love it! Would this be considered gnarly :-)

Ohhh, man!! That's some awesome, gnarly, popcorn stag!!! I'm in love...! Never seen stag like that on a GEC before, just gorgeous.
Congrats, Gundawg. That's a real score.

Gundawg : That is some Gnarly Stag!!!! There is no Ugly Stag , some is just prettier than others !!!!!

Harry

Could you imagine trying to set a shield into that mess? :D

I hope we see more stag like that out of GEC

Harry - Thanks! :) here is the rest of my modest Viper collection. :D
Top row are all from 2014. The 2 in the center, Ship Deck Wood, are from the 2015 Rendezvous. The only 2 I might add! ;) And of course the bottom row are the 2016 additions.
