GEC #47 Viper

I though my Viper needed a little extra detail, so I grabbed a chainsaw file and went at it . Fluted bolsters! Cleaned it up with some sandpaper and left everything a 600 grit satin finish. Really happy with the result.

Wow! Those look great!

I always like satin bolsters. Now I may need to try rat tailing myself. Looks great!

I want to do that to mine now but I dont think I'd be brave enough to do it. That completes the knife in my opinion. Great mod.

That rat tail job looks very good.
I've got a bottle green on way and waiting on the pre-order for snakewood. How long must I wait!!!?
Resistance was useless.

Thanks guys! I did feel like the large, plain bolster was missing something. I would say don't be afraid to try it if you've got a steady hand. I filed a small line with a triangle file first, and that gave the round file a straight notch to ride in, then just opened it up little by little.

How cool did these turn out!
I love how the form of the shield plays off the lines of the blade.

I just snagged one of the hemlock bone models and have a smooth ivory bone reserved. This pattern just blows me away and I was thrilled to see it being produced this year!

That snake wood is wild looking!

Ohhh dear sweet Moses in a pic-a-nic basket! That snakewood is phenomenal!!
I'm also curious as to whether the Northfield 47s are pinch-able, with that swedge on the blade. It sure looks fine, but I'd be afraid it would affect the ease-of-opening that the Tidioute version boasts.

As awesome as the 47s are I swore that I would not get one as I have 2 of the upcoming 85s reserved and have gone a little traditional crazy as of late and then I see these on GECs site... agreed too cool... must resist

I have two #47 Vipers on the way. Hemlock and Smooth Oiled Bone. Can't wait to put these knives to work.

Did anyone hear of a pin crack problem with the Snakewood Vipers? My brother was told that his order would not be fulfilled because half of the knives ordered from the dealer had this issue and they would not be replace. Also, will the Snakeskin handles be made, or are they a no go also?

That's unfortunate to hear. From my experience snakewood is unlike the more robust woods like ebony, cocobolo, etc. and more prone to cracking or crumbling. But it's just so darned pretty :(

Bummer!! I got a snakewood.... there doesn't appear to be any cracks in mine, or any of my snakewood knives for that matter. Pics soon!

I have worked with a lot of different woods, but not snakewood. What I've read about it is that it tends to splinter very easily when drilled or cut. As far as use goes, I'd say it's fairly durable as long as you don't drop it, but that could be said of most traditional handle materials.
