GEC #47 Viper

My Northfield just arrived. I noticed something off with the lanyard tube within the first minute. Taking a closer look it appears to have some pretty rough tool marks. I went back through this thread looking at photos of other's. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like some of the other Northfields have similar tool marks on their tubes. Would love for other Northfield owners to chime in...normal? Or poor quality control on mine. Either way, I'm a bit underwhelmed by the F&F on this model. My other GEC models with lanyard tubes definitely don't have this same issue.

I recently purchased a GEC 83 Tascosa in Purple Sage and it has the exact same issue. Looks like burrs all along the edge of the brass where it was flared.
The fit and finish on the rest of the knife is excellent and I'm thinking that those tiny burrs will eventually either fall off or smooth out with time.

Joel, mine is exactly like yours. I just didn't think twice about it with jigged bone. Nature of the beast kind of thing. I think with a Smooth bone/micarta the lanyard hole can be/will be made flush.

You have a beautiful knife:thumbup:

The f&f on mine (minus the lanyard hole) which I think is normal due to jigged bone, is exceptional:thumbup:

Thanks for the replies. Not a big deal considering the pocket wear that's in this knife's future. I may take a soft Dremel buffing wheel to it.

i've had pins look like this too on jigged bone. I agree that it's probably related to the jigging. One knife I can think of is a saw cut bone. These can't be polished and buffed too much or they look all the character on the bone. Until you magnified the lanyard tube I couldn't see what the issue was. I think that bone is beautiful and the jigging looks to have great depth to it. It they'd tried to remove that burr you'd have had a bright around the tube like you have by the bolsters. I agree, you have a gorgeous knife.

Thanks for the insight regarding the buffing. Deffinatly prefer burs on the tube as opposed to an off color circle in the bone:o!

Got a Snakewood 47 today and Lanyard tube is flush with out any burrs.....

I'm gonna take pics tomorrow...

I got my hemlock in today and the jigging finishing is perfect. This one will more than likely end up on the exchange, but I am waiting to having the other covers in hand to compare first.

Augie, love the Smooth Camel Bone. My favorite of the Tidioute models on this run.:)

JOELSM, the lanyard tube on my hemlock looks about the same. Like Paul, I chalked it up to the nature of trying to fit it flush with jigged bone. Other than that, I'd say the fit and finish on mine is top notch. Same with the green bottle glass jigged bone I got.

Yeah, I may have over reacted. I noticed the lanyard tube within the first minute of inspection, so I think my initial impression was jaded. After putting that issue aside and focusing on the rest of the package I'm impressed with the knife and happy to have it in the collection. Knowing it's a result of the finishing process and not a one-off defect specific to my knife has unruffled the feathers so to speak. I'm zen once again:p

If you plan on sticking this knife in your pocket, a slightly rough lanyard tube should be the last of your worries. The spring and blade are going to discolor if you look at it even slightly wrong!

We all want them to be immaculately perfect, but these are production knives with actual hands on finishing and time is limited on each piece.

I think your knife looks great. I have the same one and mines a bit rough on the lanyard tube too. Overall, it's fantastic though. I'd say be happy you got one of these and call it a day!

My viper came the other day. I have been taking it to work.

my only nit pick was some buffing/polish(?) marks on the blade. Not an issue as It will be a user. Im just glad it made it to me (what with the bad run or whatever happened to some)

After a few lunch/breaks with some orange or grapefruit. (Cut/process, then let sit for breaks duration while I enjoy and then rinse and wipe down)

Got my black micarta 47 yesterday, really happy with it. I am fairly new to traditionals and after having read of the difficulty with pinching open Northfields due to the swedge I was bummed that I hadn't gone with a Tidioute variant. I had a 47 in stag that I got rid of because it was a nail breaker. I was pleasantly surprised that this knife, although swedged , is easily pinched open. Quick pic this morning before work.

In for one of those gorgeous red micarta 47s. I can't wait! And I'm very happy to hear that they are pinchable, because there are times when your nail just isn't up to the task on a particular day.

Good luck to you! I am unable to pinch open my hemlock model, but it is not a nail breaker either.

I have reserved the brown snake skin handle Viper. Why have they not been made yet? What has happened, will they be made? I tried looking for an answer but have come up short. Thanks.
