That's a whole lotta rubbin'
That sounds and looks to me as if one of the bolster pins was not ground/sanded flush to the inside of the liner and is grinding against the tang. As such, this is an assembly flaw. If you use it, it will eventually wear smooth and stop grinding. I have seen this occasionally on new RR knives, but it really should not happen on a new GEC.My Owl flew in about 2 hours ago. Unfortunately the blades are rubbing quite a bit. Most alarming is the base of the pen. I can feel it grinding against the main blade as I open it. Is this a return? I was planning on using the knife in dressy situations, but was not expecting such devastation to the polish in the first few hours. On the other hand, everything else looks good and performs well, and I doubt it will affect performance. Is this expected with owls?

Yeah, I'd love to get some feedback on it because It is my first GEC, and I was expecting a bit more precision. This is from 2 hours of gingerly inspecting it. I could see calling it 'character' and just enjoy wearing it to work. Alternatively, I think I could send it back to the vendor and roll the dice again on a stag. Which way would y'all go on this one? That's a whole lotta rubbin'![]()
Personally, since I intend to use and carry this knife, I would just fix the rub myself, buff it on the buffer, and carry it. If I intended to make it a safe queen or save as trade fodder, I would contact GEC to see if they would be willing to correct the flaws. Oh, and yeah, you could just return it and try to locate another.Yeah, I'd love to get some feedback on it because It is my first GEC, and I was expecting a bit more precision. Unfortunately I think it's just the 2 blades making contact in like 3 places. Centering? Play? Flex? There is no way for me to touch the pen blade nail nick without bumping next to poor howard, and then I have the same contact as others have pointed out near the tip of the clip point. So that curved mark on the tang is from the tip of the clip blade? I wish I had mine here now to look at.Unfortunately I think it's just the 2 blades making contact in like 3 places. Centering? Play? No. I must have misinterpreted that. There is definitely a gouge there, but it doesn't seem to be causing any issues. The grinding feeling comes at the center of the blade where they meet next to the own. Im guessing that is not desireable. So that curved mark on the tang is from the tip of the clip blade? Well, now you have got me curious about the particular layout on this knife. It will interesting to see how smoothly mine operates when it gets here Monday. The only other single-spring two-bladed GEC I have here is a 62, and that one has no rub of any kind.No. I must have misinterpreted that. The action feels great (after the pin clears the clip point) and the snap sounds great. It's all pretty assertive. I think the liners look OK and there is no evidence of rubbing on those sides. It is really just that the 2 blades are aligned too closely together and there is a bit of flex in the pen such that I can't deploy it without bending it into the main. It might even be touching it at rest, I can't slide a piece of paper in there. I guess you could open the clip, then open then pen, then close the clip, but I'd probably rather just let it rub.H hedd Certainly disappointing. What's the walk&talk like though? Since you have no Safe Queens then I'd suggest a very thorough wash with hot water, liquid soap/toothbrush then drying, some WD-40 then a drop of oil. It is possible that some of this rub is due to swarf inside the knife causing surface damage. You'd be surprised what unpleasantness comes out after a wash & brush-up. How about the brass liners? Are they smooth inside or evidence of burrs?
I have/had 5-6 White Owls from the first run, all have very decent snap and no visible blade-rub. If you decide against cleaning it out then you'll have to return it to the dealer, with the current fever, I doubt he'll be able to replace it for you just a refund of an exchange for Stag maybe ? Shouldn't be like this in my experience.

Will, Oh-the reason I asked is I was wondering if that may have had an affect on the lack of blade rub on your earlier Owls. I guess not. Best of luck on your pursuit of a spear. If I see or hear of one I'll let you know.S stagmeister Regret of my knife collecting career, I ignored the Spears at the time and all the WO I've had/have are Clips. Ridiculous as I prefer Spear blades generally, been looking for a Spear WO for ever but no luck, so far.....
Thanks, Will
