GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Thanks to everyone who has commented on the Stag 77, much appreciated.
I'll second that! It also appears quite symmetrical and thin, love to see a spine shot?
Thanks, ask and you shall receive :) GEC did a great job cutting and matching the sides on this one.

The bolsters are carbon steel. I believe they're cast but could easily be wrong. Based on some of the in-progress pictures I've seen, they may be forged.

Knives in the 3 3/4 - 3 7/8 range are just the perfect size to me. These Medium Barlows are no exception…

I've only the one now having sold my Autumn Gold, but this one rings all the bells for me. The Micarta just feels right in the hand and the single long-pull spear is my favorite blade shape for looks and overall utility. This knife gets an "EEE" rating for execution, ease of use and excellence!

I really like my smooth ivory bone single blade. My only complaint is that there's a small 1/2" gap between one scale and the liner. Otherwise, it's quite fine.

Apologies if this has been covered, but what's the pull like on the single blade spears? They sit low like the clip points from the first single run, and the clip I had was pretty stiff because of this.

I feel they are right around a 7. Just about right in my opinion. Not too stiff and not lazy at all. Nice snap.

There is a difference between the spear and clip I believe. The nail nick on the spear extends further towards the tip, which allows you a bit more leverage and thus a little easier to open in my experience. Maybe others can confirm if they believe that to be true.

I agree with you. I think the physics of it help to give extra leverage. I'm not sure, maybe the springs have less preload on the spears as well. I really enjoy being able to pinch open 15 clips which have a taller profile by the nail nick or long pull. I really really hope to see 77 clips with a blade profile like this in the future. The current 77 clips sit too low to pinch. Oddly enough however two of my 77 spears are able to be pinched open with some effort, definitely not as quick as the 15 clip or the sheepfoot.

My two 77 Clips are right around the same pull as this newest run of 77 Spears. The difference in mine is almost unnoticeable.

I like the look the the 77 clips but I found my two stiff. My stag 77 was equal if not more stiff than my 54 big jacks. However I can use a crown lifter in the long pull on the 54's, whereas the 77 long pull was too slim. My three spears are about 6-7 i would say. Bob, do you or anyone know if there's a way to soften the springs on a knife without having it taken apart?

Somebody tell me I'm dumb for liking the Blackwood better than the Micarta. Might just be that I've had it longer, but it's calling me.

I think you just tested the waters and found out what you probably already knew deep down...

^^^ African Blackwood is by far my favorite scale material. It's a fascinating wood and beautiful. My single sheepfoot #77 is in AB

Thanks for the comments guys, I've decided that the first one is the best one, I'm sticking with the Blackwood! It'll be butchering my apple this afternoon to get started on the patina. The Micarta has already gone back in the tube.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Incidentally, I stabbed myself in the palm closing it after this shot... ouch.

Blackwood is my choice over the Micarta too , but they are both nice.
