GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

This knife is just a joy to own and carry, it's completely taken over the #1 spot in my small assortment of traditionals. As said above the pull and snap on both blades is perfect. Both blades are also perfectly centered.

I think the pinchability is all about the blade shape. The 15 clip rides taller and peeks at the nick or pull with a steeper angle at the spine of the blade. The 77 clip has less angle to it overall and the spine on the blade is more shallow. I like that it folds in on itself almost 1:1, but it's a stiff pull. I have 54's with a clip shape near identical to the 15's and they are pinchable even with a noticeably stronger spring.

Let's see some push for a pinchable clip 77 barlow. I'm right with you MCar.

I agree ref pinchability. My sheepfoot 77 doesn't need an EO notch because the sheepfoot blade is pinchable as-is. A spear blade definitely benefits from an EO. A clip, depending on it's contour might be difficult to pinch even with an EO depending on it's placement.

With my sheepfoot 77 I always pinch it open. I've only used the pull a handful of times. It's just too easy to grab and pull it open.

This one has been in my pocket non stop. I can't say I carry it everyday, but it definitely gets carried more often than not.

I can't get enough of mine, it's completely taken over since day one. Other's all fight for the #2 spot...

It slices the morning bagel, opens the mail, cuts down boxes, opens packages, preps meat for the grill or skillet then serves as my dinner knife at the table.

I love the square angles on the saw cut. It has that vintage look. I wish they hadn't rounded the edges on the rest.
Now I want a single blade sheepsfoot, so whenever you get tired of yours collecting dust you can ship it my way. :D

Ha! You know how I love my single sheepfoot in African blackwood, lol. These 77 Barlows (I only have the two, this red sawcut and the single sheep in AB) have captured my heart. :D

Hi Arizonaranch, I too have the two blades in red sawcut but I mostly use the single blade blackwood. I dislike finding me to press the copy blade when using the spear!!

Arizona,
Both of your 77s are obviously well loved. That sheep gets me every time. Sadsappy's gonna have a sweet looking knife once it gets as dark as the blackwood sheep of yours. Of course it beautiful now as well. i strive for patina like that.

arizonaranchman, I really like the way the Red Sawcut handles wear/age. I'm going to give this one a workout this Spring.

The other thing I love about the sawcuts, in particular, is that the butt of the handle is more squared-off, like traditional barlows. I like the other cover materials, but wish they were not rounded at the butt of the covers. This is why the sawcut #77 barlows are probably my top pick of the litter (although my smooth ivory bone, despite the rounded end, can't be beat).

AL - I have that same knife, in the same condition as yours. I can't tell you how many times I have thought of doing exactly what you have just suggested! :D More to follow!:D

Sounds like a plan, Ron... we'll compare notes/photos here. Anybody else, just jump right in! :)

That's a lot of daily tasks. Since you use it for food after a day's use, do you wash it? Do you wash it after dinner and such? How do maintain that knife with your daily tasks?

Well Al and Ron : Now that I am done sitting and watching the car sink into the lake , I can either sit and watch the stop light change or get into watching the patina develope on my 77. I just put mine into my LFP . The picture is not the best because of the lighting outside today.

AL and Harry - It took me 20 minutes to find this knife in my safe! The whole time I was looking I was trying to come up with some kind of logic behind why I had not seen this knife since 2 days after I initially received it from Mike. The only thing I can figure is it must be some sort of disorder that posses someone to hide something in a steel box where no one can get to it, not even the owner. You can consider this my before picture gentlemen. I assure you that this Northfield Barlow is in my RFP as we speak and it will cut its first apple before the day is gone. Have a wonderful weekend!:D
