GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Arizona, you think that the heat of the summer will blacken up this 77 as much as your sheep?

Harry, I have to say I really like the way that CK pocket slip is aging as well. I carry my 28 Grinling in one of those brown Italian leather slips just obviously not quite as much as you. Those Italian leather slips smell great! Perhaps I'm just weird, perhaps I'm a kin to it by being Sicilian, I dunno.

Harry, and Al, I commend you for using yours. I have an old red clip as well and I love it. I don't carry it very much though because I'm afraid the back dye gonna rub off. I love the way these look. Arizona yours is looking good in the red and getting ready to write novels of it's own. The factory fresh look of this clip point is what drew me to GEC. I'm glad to see you guys using them. I typically use all of my knives except these old reds.

Thank you Bear Bug : The brown slip is the one that I carry my 73 Stag in and it has molded to it very well . I carry my 77 in my RFP without a slip in order to wear or patina the covers. I do have another Old Red Sawcut 77 Barlow with the Sheepsfoot blade to remind me of what this one was like. This one is my first 77 Barlow . On a normal day , I have the 77 in the RFP and the 73 in a slip in the LFP.

Bear,

In my experience it's the hot summer months (the damp perspiration in the RFP) that really causes the deep darkening. This red 77 has yet to see any significant amount of hot weather carry (I've had it since the last week of September 2015) so it hasn't really been exposed to what my blackwood 77 was (which was carried nearly all of 2015 prior to this one's arrival). The blackwood 77's backspring and the exposed area of the blade had turned nearly black. This red 77 will probably do the same once summer arrives. I'll record it's aging as it naturally transforms.

If you carry it daily and use it, you'll probably experience the same results.

Fine looking plate of meat there, Al! :D

I've really enjoyed this thread lately. Those sawcut single-clip 77's y'all are putting to use are some great looking knives!

Thanks, Barrett!

It is too late at night for me to see pictures like this Al !!!! Makes me hungry again just before time to go to rest !!!! Your 77 is looking good !!!!!!

Harry

Thanks, Harry! Yeah, I should've posted those pics closer to meal time! :D

Brandon, I think they just get better looking with age and use. I sure am enjoying using this one.

Try as I might, I can find no fault with this knife. I love it!

Ismaris, Nice pic, I'm surprised I still like seeing pics with snow. There's something magical about that stuff though, I always like it.

Ron, Nicely done. I'm starting to feel itchy to put mine to work. Glad your thumb healed up some.

I am very glad that you are back Ron !!!!!

Harry

Thanks Harry! :D

Brandon - Thanks, I decided to keep working it and flushing it out with mineral oil. Instead of going to the Y, I worked out on this 77! It is smoothing up quite nicely now! :)

Ron, I appear to have your knife's twin. Cory Head sent it to me with the assurance that it was "the best F&F GEC ever put out" (or something like that)... I have bought something like 50 GEC knives to find out if he was telling the truth and I confirmed he was. These 77 Barlows are an amazing to both carry and to use.

Macchina - There are several on here lately that could be twins. They are an amazing knife to use and carry. I don't know if they are the best F&F GEC has ever put out, but they are on par with what I have come to expect from the company. IMO the 77 is definitely a very versatile pattern in any of its configurations. :)

As I'm sure you know, the cool thing about this run was the use of nickel silver throughout: bolsters, liners, and pins. I normally love the way brass patinas but the construction on these knives is really unique and it may be my imagination but I think the contact of the NS liners seems to really promote a strong patina on the backspring. I'll have to dig out one of my galvanic corrosion charts to check if NS has a higher electrode potential with carbon steel than brass...

It's interesting how the different metals age and patina. The backspring on my sheepfoot 77 turned nearly black just from natural carry and use over many months.

Ron, nicely done. I still have a fair bit of winter weight to work off since it was mild here. I think think I need to hit the Y. I'm glad you guys are using these. I've decided to wait for the next run and hope for a pinchable clip or sheep that I'll put through it's paces.

Ok guys, Patina Update  I am loving this knife. My OO 73 is peed off at me because it has not been getting as much pocket time. So today I just carried them both, see the totin' thread. Forgive the cell phone pictures all my cameras were dead as a door nail!:D

Looking good Ron!

I showed this in whatcha totin' but this 2Blade Wharncliffe Clip 77 in sawcut dark chestnut bone had a blade/liner delete, satin bolsters, and lightening of the dark chestnut into an antique amber sawcut done by a wonderful modder, Chris Baker.
