GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

So does the linen take a better/higher polish than canvas? I heard that buffing compound and canvas don't play well together.

Yes, in my experience. The linen micarta feels smooth and polished. The canvas micarta has a rough texture and you can feel/see the threads of fabric raised up above the covers - kind of like frayed jeans if that makes any sense. Usually the linen is run in olive drab or burgundy. The canvas is run a fair amount in natural and denim. I'm not a fan (personal preference) of the natural canvas because it takes on a red brown color with use. The linen micarta's keep the original color better.

Well that's a bummer. Natural canvas micarta is my favorite cover material, and I much prefer long pulls on my knives. I guess it's going to be slim pickings for that combination from now on.

Bodes very well for those with unused specimens. GEC has made many small moves that help to preserve the collectability of their knives, whether intentionally or not. Eliminating Genuine stag, no more shields on stag, changing etches and tang stamps, the disappearance of stainless and 01 to name a few. Say nothing about the patterns made only once and unlikely to be made again. If it is by design, it makes a lot of sense to keep collectors in mind as that is their core market segment.

Oh to have bought 20 of the O1 Red Neck Farm Tools when I had the chance....:(

When I bought my 42 green micarta lockback, I had to options of carbon steel or 440C. If I could go back in time, I'd grab 10 of those 440C's.

Can you enlighten me and explain what you meant by "Eliminating genuine stag" please?

Just curious, they are putting an end cap on the 77 barlows? Please say it ain't so...

Haha you're right it could be nice.... ;)

it doesnt matter for me now, my phone disqualified me according to a conversation I just had with ck knives. i guess being logged on earlier in the day to sign up for those 15 reserves might have done something to it. Leaving the subway tunnels and catching that message got the fingers moving fast. but glitches I suppose, c'est la vie.

I'm curious how many of you guys prefer the two bladed 77s to the single blade 77s.
