GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

I really do hope so, I was lucky enough to score on the 77 micarta lottery and if this ends up being the same linen micarta as the 78 CK SFO handles I will be ecstatic. I think Ramrodmb Ramrodmb can vouch for me that the 78 natural linen micarta is very classy looking...arguably this was the most sought after knife of the 78 run.
This would be awesome. But alas, I was not picked. Glad you got one.

Here is the Natural linen on a 78.

It is going to be the linen according to an email reply that I got from Mike. I’d assume it’s the same as the 78’s.

T texmex03 ...after further review GEC's site for 77 Barlow says "Natural Canvas" whereas CK's site says "Natural Linen". I would be happy with either one but really like the natural linen that was on the CK 78 SFO.....probably a typo on GEC's part but perhaps knifeswapper knifeswapper can clarify for us. Thanks.

Yes Mike, Please clarify. It looks like I'll have one to "chicken-eye, coon-finger, and fondle" before long.

Natural canvas is my favorite micarta as it actually patinas along with knife if you are into that.

I have that knife in 2 blade Jamie and I have the one from the last run in Bone Micarta so it will make a good Micarta Family. 2 blade clip is gonna be sweet!

If I had my choice I would go linen just to have something different but will be happy with anything.

At what stage is bone usually dyed? Could this just be the pre-dyed stock? I love smooth white bone, though, so I'd be just as pleased if it stays natural. I don't even mind the hotdog shield that's usually on the white bone. :D

Just saw that. Maybe both will be white. The 43 was supposed to be orange.

They haven't been dyed yet - at least in the pictures. In reality I would guess they are probably mostly done as GEC's pictures are usually a bit behind - not as a rule.. just most of the time. The 43's should be orange and the 77's I think are supposed to be elderberry. I wouldn't take the color description too literally as camel usually dyes weird and you can have all sorts or variation of orange from mostly white to pumpkin bright orange. It's one of the reasons I highly prefer camel over bovine because of how different each one looks because how the dye takes.

Another variation of micarta... I like the bone linen. In person you can see little specks of color variation in the threads. The picture below you can sort of make out small black dots in the covers.

That’s kind of a bummer - even though the linen on the 78s is superb.

Is linen more traditional?

GEC has a new'ish policy that it will not put canvas micarta on Northfield models; even SFO's.

I can see their reasoning.....Kinda like an evening gown made out of burlap sacks vs one made from linen. The linen is much the dressier fabric and the Northfield line is the nicer or dressier knife.

So does the linen take a better/higher polish than canvas? I heard that buffing compound and canvas don't play well together.
