GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

I'm liking the looks of those a lot! Glad I went with the sheepsfoot in tan.

It does seem like that sheepsfoot blade could sit a little deeper in the handle, but it'll certainly make for an easy knife to open.

The Sheepfoot looks high to me, too. On the other hand, on a single blade it's always in the "open" position when using, so it won't cut into our hands like it would on a Stockman or other pattern.

I will let you in on a little secret about Bill, he is very good to leave blades running as high as possible. Because you can always lower them with a few seconds work; it is much more exhaustive to have to raise them. The sheepfoot clears the end nail, thus it can be dropped WAY down in the frame if you so wish.

Does filing down the kick change the backspring position when closed? I'll probably leave mine alone, but nice to know the option exists. Really excited to check out this vintage tan in person!

If you don't get too carried away with it and go SLOWLY it won't change the spring enough to notice. The key is go SLOWLY. I use one of my wife's old emery nailboards to take down the kick on a knife. That way it's impossible to take off too much by accident (as in with an electric Dremel type tool).

Just ordered myself one of these.

Beautiful knife! I wonder how long they will last.

EDIT:
Man I want to see this exact knife with the exact bone coloring but in sawcut one day. Autumn Gold Saw Cut on this or the 73 is a dream. :)

I still can't get over what a great size the #77 is for me. The 2 blade has been a regular companion for the last couple of months and has, for the most part, wedged and cored many apples.

I'm really looking forward to the single sheepsfoot. I'm interested in comparing its slimmer profile and reduced weight to the earlier 2 blade.

I hate I missed the clip!!! :(:o

Oh well, at least I have one of these on the way. :D

Do we know the numbers produced on all the NF Barlows yet? Did I miss that post?

I'm with you on this one, I am a clip point guy and was really wanting one in smooth autumn bone. On the bright side, I have never had a sheeps foot main blade knife so this will be a good one to fill that void in my life. :D

Totally agree. These knives look amazing! I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a #77 Barlow last time, but really have wanted a sheep foot (kind of my thing) and I am so excited to get one in the mail, soon I hope!

Just ordered an autumn bone w/ wharnie. That'll be three new 77's coming to me...:p I used to wait to buy GEC used on the forums, but lately the cheaper approach is buy new! I bought the Wall St in autumn bone and it's gorgeous! Can't wait for these...

Adding the smooth bone at the last minute was a bit of a mean trick. I now have FOUR (maybe five) of these Barlows coming to me :D
