GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

I went to the GEC website but cannot see anything about a new run of 77's. The all steel 2 blade # 77, are these coming up or available now ? I cannot find them on dealer sites either.. I am not a good thing finder !

Go to Mike's site (collector knives) and check on the early reserves.

Mike really studies these forums carefully! We beg for stag or Micarta, he delivers! We ask for coping blades, and he understands the need to supply us with coping blades. He's like Santa!

The last thing I need is another spear point blade. But Micarta is my favorite handle cover. And I think a coping blade should be mandatory for any multiple blade knife. So I'm all in for the new Northfield Barlow with a coping secondary. Micarta handles for me, please! :D

I'm curious if the handles on these knives will be more of a traditional barlow style or completely round. Because the rounded handles are too slick in my opinion.

According to kj, below, the rounded or radiused handles were the traditional style in the past.

It is not only rounded on the ends but the Ebony handles are radiused (rounded) along all edges. This makes for a smoother more pleasing in hand feel. This radiusing of handle slabs was fairly standard on vintage knives, esp. the old Sheffield ones. Knife companies stopped doing this in more recent times, likely as a cost saving measure.
The rounding of the ebony on my 77 is perfect, not a 90 degree angle or edge anywhere on the handle. I think this is a big part of why we all find these 77's to be so pleasing. I have not seen any other knife receive 100% positive feedback.

I'm with kj. I like the rounded or radiused handles. Seems more appropriate on a Northfield Barlow. After all, the Northfields are supposed to be a little more "finished" than the Tidioutes.

Oh, I see, well then I guess I like it to have some angles to it then. As far as comfort goes between the two, it's a subjective thing I guess. I feel that round handled knife tend to slip/twist out of my hand to were I have to adjust my grip, it's not a big deal I'm still getting one regardless.

Now you've me debating if I should change my single blade Micarta to a 2 blade secondary coping. Trying to stick to two on this run. One blackwood single and one micarta single. I'm just wondering if I would use the coping much in the long run.

i would really like to see the contours on all handles as they did the palo santo wood TC barlows from a recent run. Nice radiused angles but still noticeable

The coping blade is the only reason I jumped on this run. This could be the one that steals the pocket from the others.

I'm trying to stick to two knives too(that's a lot of 2s haha). I got one single and one 2-bladed knife, I felt that there is always going to be another single bladed knife to get in the future.

The picture that you showed is the type of handle that I like. I should say that the fully-rounded handle actually feels quite nice in a 2 bladed knife and I experience no slipping in that configuration, (as I am fondling my gec 78 african blackwood) it's only the single-bladed configurations, even then it's just something that I notice, nothing major just a preference

I got to say I really like the rounded feel of the NF like the recent single SF in Ebony. Like a well used bar of soap. All subjective I guess. Looking forward to the Spear in Ivory bone single and double--very classy look with that model I venture to say! Lloyd

IIRC the sawcut bone 77's had the traditional squared cut to the bare-end of the scales.

The smooth finished scales, both wood and bone, have the rounded scales.

I love the AB scales of my single sheepfoot. It's the most pocketable knife I've ever owned.

I also love the rounded angles. I am in for a single autumn bone since I don't have a knife with those scales yet. Trying to restrict myself to one knife per run at first lol. Although I do not have a micarta handled knife either.. hmm

Join the Dark Side Drew. Micarta is a man's best friend. Really though. It's very strong and to be able to see the fine or larger thread pattern in the micarta is a nice touch ;) As you can see I've already sold myself on the micarta. Now I'm just debating between the 2 blade or single blade
