GEC 86’s for 2023

I think I have to call it. These Marrow Bone Barlows have to be just about the most beautiful knives that Bill Howard has ever made! Good grief!

I know everyone has their preferences for the amount of soup they like in their bone, but this one is just right for me. Not too much and not too little. The pile side is almost identical.

Whenever you get frustrated by how difficult GEC knives are to get, just take a look at one of these. I believe we are in the golden age of GEC knives, and it will not last forever. I will put up with the difficulties in order to snag one like this every once in a while.

Charlie waynorth waynorth . Even though this is not a Waynorth SFO, your influence is all over this knife. You have helped Bill to up his game in many ways. Thanks!
Congrats, that's a nice one!

I don't think it's a matter of putting up with the difficulties of buying a GEC these days. If you really want one, you will try to get one. It's really a matter of whether you have more money (buying secondary market) or more luck/connections.

eBay prices don’t mean really squat unless you’re looking at completed auctions. Just sayin’.
I know, but it's the same seller selling the 2 knives he just got. Assuming that's the case and he probably got them from the same dealer, why is he doing such a big spread? I'm wondering if there is a big difference in production numbers.
Charlie already told us the numbers on the ebony.

Could be. Or maybe he just thinks the bone will be more desirable. It was the more expensive of the two on the drops I saw, maybe he’s just scaling that price gap up a bit with his insanely inflated asking prices.

Just a shot of the two 86’s that I drove 12 hours to get. Man, I don’t think I’ll be able to do that again. For two these knives, I think it was worth it.

I'd say so Travis. That marrow bone is the cream of the crop!!!

Great knife. Superb covers, GEC is rightfully proud of them. Great fit and finish, long pull, firm walk and talk but not a nail breaker, maybe a little firmer than my other 86s from this run, big bold bolsters fluted and lined, cover art is great, even like the etch. SS clip would make it a perfect user but not as traditional. Am excited for the waynorth waynorth HJs but please don't let FOMO make you overpay. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Sadly, but that is my only chance to get a Waynorth, overpay on the secondary market.🤑🤷

ya know, i tried for about half an hour to figure out my ebay password, and i finally looked it up. i was very close to submitting offers on all of them 😂 i tried one and it said seller would be interested if your offer was closer to $425
lololol. BTW, I think my offers are fair: a few bones less than what actual retailers are charging. I'm not paying extra to some fleabay creep - for what, putting their greasy and dishonorable mitts on an otherwise perfectly nice knife? At least actual retailers can claim overhead costs for the mark up!

i submitted the lowest retail offer 😂 i refuse to pay these scalpers off, cause thats what landed us here in the first place. those more well heeled and willing to shell out extra, good for you and your deep pockets. it is what it is, sadly. I have plenty of knife buddies who have moved on from the hobby due to this.

I've been on the precipice a number of times, but have successfully been able to refocus my interest away from the more ego-driven arenas. In short, when they zig, I zag.

What saddens me somewhat is, as you've eloquently pointed out, it does harm to the community as a whole. I've said before that things seem to devolve in the following order: Interest to hobby, hobby to profession, profession to racket. The problem is, once it's seen as a racket, the reasonable and rational folks drop out of the hobby. Nobody wants to knowingly be fleeced. 🤷
