Gec bullnose

Natural Canvas came in the mail today

Loved it, but was disappointed in the centering....

That was, until I fixed it:

How'd you manage that?

Good ol' Bladeforums search. Found a post with a link to the GEC factory tour. If you watch the GEC factory tour part 2 on YouTube, Bill shows how he fixes centering with a press (it is somewhere around the 13 minute mark). I did the same thing, but used clamps, and it worked!

Those natural micarta knives look great guys! As far as the pull goes, mine was fairly stiff. I couldn't even pinch it open at first, but after using it for just a couple days I can tell a difference. Now I can open it just by pinching the blade.

Man I love the 71 but they are so hard to open . It makes me feel like given up and Going back to my modern folders .

i was initially scared off of traditional slipjoints because of how hard they can be to open. it turns out, however, that years of violin lessons have given my fingers the necessary strength required to pop open even 7s and 8s without losing my grip on the knives! finally found a positive takeaway from my decade with the devil's box, as i call it haha.

all to say: i love the spring strength of the 71s. really inspires confidence in use.

Polished the "Bull nose" off. Also had some minor blade wrapping on the back spring...1st GEC that has ever been an issue. Little time on my sharpening system should help.

What's the best way to break them in . They are just to hard to pull open . It's nu fun :( .

If its a natural canvas I would be very happy to take that responsibilty off your hands :) but otherwise you could try oil, and/or leaving it half open for a day or two. Keep in mind that oil will likely darken the colour of the micarta.

Does GEC not soak the knives in oil after polishing? I think I saw it somewhere that it is done to help remove the grits and polishing compounds. If so, I wouldn't think some clear mineral oil is doing to effect the color.

I wonder what they did different to this batch to make the canvas micarta look so good.

Got any details Mike? This one and the midnight run had a drier looking lighter color to previous GEC natural canvas micarta a and I like it.

They do reportedly soak the knives, but yet the colour changes with oil. I have no explanation.

Whats the midnight run?

I agree with you that the new ones look better. Here are some photos I took of the natural micarta from the previous run of bull nose's. These new ones look better polished and slightly less radius-ed, where as the last run were left somewhat rough and fuzzy (which to me was a turn-off so i ended up selling mine)

Haha. Ok That makes more sense! Thanks
I agree it does look great!

I can see it now my mispelled post above starts a rumor of a first ever secret GEC midnight run, an sfo by Mike that only his best customers that belong to some knife collecting secret society knew about. :devilish::devilish::devilish::devilish::devilish:
