GEC Huckleberry Boy's Knife

My ebony two blade jack hasn't left my pocket since I got it. It is just an awesome knife. I have usually liked the bigger knives (#42) but this has proven to me to be just about the perfect size. The blade shape and swage compliment each other perfectly. What are the odds they will make this knife with some different covers (stag, copperhead jigged bone etc)?

I don't know whether to hope they do, or hope they don't. On one hand, I'd love to see this in stag and even the rotten banana (Dear GEC, *please* bring that handle material back!) ... but my pocketbook would hate that and it might finally be the straw that breaks the camel's back and turns me into "a collector" instead of just a "user with a few more knives than I need".

I tend to think of myself as an accumulator, not a collector. Semantics, I know, but I don't buy them to put away in a case, so I like your phrase a "user with a few more knives than I need".

Better yet, Andi's "User with a selection."

:-)

I really like the Boys Knife, too, and look forward to whatever else GEC decides to do with this pattern, and/or even just the frame. ;)

I am definitely a "user with a few more knives than I need." That phrase describes me to a tee. My checkbook wouldn't appreciate a stag handled #15 either but my collection of "users" would love it. Cant wait to see what else they do with this pattern.

I got plenty ebony knives so I opted now Single Blade Nifebrite. Its something COMPLETELY different of my jigged bone and wood handle knives. Can't wait to get it.

I received both of mine a few days ago. Both very nice knives. I'll take some pics when the barlows come in too.

You guys are a bunch of enablers! After staring at Charlie's scan of the single blade ebony version since it was posted, I finally gave in to temptation and ordered one tonight. It's such a simple, classic pattern I just couldn't help myself.:o

With its Barlow buddy.

Another Boy's knife with Patina. Nice pair Mike!!
That #15 pattern, in its various forms, is going to be in a lot of pockets in 2013 - you watch!!

I think you'll like it. I'm certainly happy with mine.

It's a great pattern, and soooo nice in hand, it would be a shame not to put it to use!
Thanks for the Barlow sir. Outstanding blade.

This is exactly why I'll stick wity my S&M heritage. Similar design but can be pinched open. Makes me like my heritage even more with glass smooth pull. Why can't GEC get this down? Their designs are amazing.... quality is top notch but so many are non-starters due to the pull it really is sad.

Mine arrived in the mail today. It's going into a boy's stocking from Santa, but I'll tell you a bit about it before I set it away for a few days.

The jigged bone handles are incredible. The fit and finish is impeccable. The action is super-smooth and includes a solid half-stock. My only grievance, to make this a functional tool for a young boy, Great Eastern should have softened the action or weakened the spring. It's not the stiffest spring ever, and it's not too stiff to be uncomfortable for a Dad or Grandad, but there's no way a small boy will be able to manage without assistance.

The spring is stronger than a Queen S&M Heritage, but not as strong as a File & Wire. It's quite a bit stronger than a typical Case or Old Timer. If that makes sense.

but there's no way a small boy will be able to manage without assistance.

Maybe it's a safety feature. Have to get Dad to open the knife. Then Dad can oversee its use.

That, or they never actually intended it to be a youth knife despite the name. Did anyone else actually purchase one of these for a boy?

I don't believe they were ever meant to be a child's knife. "Boy's Knife" is just a name borrowed from an old catalog. As for the tight springs in the knife,40 years from now,the GEC will still have a good snap when closed, while other knives won"t have any snap. In my opinion.

My glow in the dark Nifebrite version came yesterday with a GEC tulipwood Canoe, and I am very impressed by the FnF on both knives.

My jigged bone 2 blade boys knife came in yesterday and looks to be a wonderful knife but getting that main blade open is a tough one. I got to stop biting my nails:rolleyes:
