This is a tough crowd.

The 35 beer and sausage was originally scheduled to be a full run of 35 cattle knives. Coming out of the covid lock down there was a steel shortage preventing them from that. So the comb was fashioned from spring steel as a stop gap. I give them a pass on that one. Everything made after that, that you deem a novelty? Fire at will.👍

I gave another example and I never said their entire collection after the beer & sausage was comprised of novelty knives. If y'all like that sort of thing, have at it. Up until recently, the only thing obscure was the French Kate and somehow I don't think a ton of people are carrying one of those everyday. Once again, I could be wrong....

I was just giving the 1 knife a pass, and did not say you thought everything was a novelty just the ones you deemed as such. That's all.

Gotcha. Honestly, I wish more companies (and people in general) had the ability to adjust and adapt the way Bill did for that run. I applaud them for that most definitely. I reckon my point was, being different just for the sake of being different isn't always a good thing....

This 68 had the bone splintering issue too . I remember being somewhat annoyed but got over it . I didn’t get injured though:) edit - probably handled at least 60 jigged gec’s over the years . Maybe 4 or 5 had this issue . I think the reason is fissures in the bone that become present at the buffing phase. I’d consider it a defect but they do get pocket worn fast .

Eleven (11) years, carried!!! So far!!! It was an early sample that Bill sent me. The mint one below it was the same. I asked Bill to make the sawcut more pronounced on the remaining run of knives, and he did!! Old Boiley plus 1.jpg
Thank Goodness Bill saw the beauty in a simple Barlow knife!! This one was modeled after an old New York Knife Co. Barlow!!NYK three w TC 1.jpg
I begged for the long pull, so that was my fault, but in real life it works flawlessly; firm pull, but no busted nails!!!
Only my opinion; but The size of Bill's company, plus his love of traditional patterns, made this knife possible, and was a big factor in the revival of Barlows in many companies!!!!! A huge increase in Barlows was suddenly available in many places after the TCs hit the market!!
This one I carry holds an edge forever - Bill actually checks the heat treat on every run!!!
How much better can a simple pocket knife be???

waynorth waynorth - thanks for posting. very cool to see the inspiration piece alongside the modern (traditional) interpretation.

GECs are nice. Most of mine are from 2006-2012. They have their issues. It would be nice if they didn't do the 12 different covers to drive the FOMO Pokemon fever. Just do one or two options of a nice jigged bone. Stop lightening the pulls, start using nickel silver hardware and put the kabosh on the novelty blade types. I don't need forks, spoons, combs and caplifters.

I grew up with Schrade, Imperial and Case to name a few, there were definitely others. Never was a "Collector" until I realized that I'm a collector, I'm also a user but with the count of what I own I can never carry them all. I've had very few issues with GEC, doesn't mean I haven't had issues, just very few. Quality will rival the Cutlery greats in my opinion.

Sad to see how obtaining a GEC has changed but it's not GEC's fault in my mind. I don't think GEC's method/business plan should change, do they hire more people, buy a bigger facility? why change if the product you make does really well in the market their in? Their P&L sheet answers questions we don't know the answer to.

I still carry my Case, Schrade's and others but obviously I carry my GEC's more with no change in the foreseeable future.

It's good to agree to disagree, I wish politicians could do the same ;) :)
