Got wood? Part Deux.

One of my favorite woods - Australian ringed gidgee. In addition to its beautiful color and figure, gidgee is also one of the hardest woods known to man. While making this knife I broke a drill bit drilling the tang cavity, dulled my hardened steel handle broach while fitting it to the tang, and went through grinding belts and sandpaper like they were nothing.

Absolutely gorgeous wood Wulf - Gidgee is indeed some lovely stuff. Might we have a peek at the full knife?

I think it's time to bring this one up again. :)

There's plenty of koa in this thread but I never get tired of seeing nice koa.

Highly underrated - naturally stable -simple, strong, clean -- Mesquite (bloodwood inlay)

Another favorite - Curly Maple

Don't think I've seen any pink ivory yet.

Here's one . . .

On "the right knife" it can be killer. I have a knife on order right now to be made with it.

Sometimes a wood handle is so perfect that it is hard to imagine the knife with any other handle material.

To me, this is an example . . . (ancient bog oak)

Nice additions Doug - Matt was very fond of that quilted maple for knife handles and it's easy to see why.

Ken - love the bog oak. I've heard it dismissed by some as "boring" but on the right knife it really rocks. I have it on one piece only but I suspect that will change going forward.

Will, I love that Gidgee!

Like Roger says, some think the bog oak might have a bit of a 'boring' look at times. Maybe so from a distance.

But, up close and personal, it can take on a totally different appearance.

Makes a pretty cool handle material. I like it.
